I like your idea for curving the fret wire. It beats the heck out of the over-priced devices available from luthier supply houses. I also like the ideas of trimming the fret ends as you go and checking for level as you go. Thanks!

Thankyou your sharing. It is very practically helpful for fretting ! on guitar ! One question is... What kind (or type) of fret you are using for classical guitar ??

Wonderful videos. I’ve enjoyed these greatly. If I may ask, what size fret wire do you use!

Hi I'm at this stage now. You mentioned the fretboard falling from the 12th onwards. I have this on my build but not intentionally unfortunately but I can address this as the fretboard is still oversized. How much fall should it be and what is the reason for it? Much appreciation for your videos

WOW! What an excellent serie this is. Thank You for sharing. About to build a guitar my self. Have two questions if you don´t mind. Where have you find the Go-Bar rods you are using. I have bulit an Go-Bar, but can´t find any descent rods. And what kind of frets are you using for classical guitars? Thank you!

the go-bar rods are from stewmac as is the fretwire; I don't know the exact dimensions as I'm on holidays now. Thank you for your positive repons!

Hello Ad, wonderful video. I was wondering if you ever relieve the bass string side of fret board after leveling the board, before installing the frets? I’m doing a refret on my guitar with flat neck angle built on a solera which has had a persistent fuzzy buzzing from the wound basses mostly in the lower to 5th or 6th fret. I’m going to try adding in some relief on bass side and gluing new frets in per your technique to try to alleviate the buzzing.

i don't. When you do a proper fretjob on a perfectly straight neck a classical guitar will not buzz ,considering that you have a correct action.

Thank you so much for your response Ad. I’m proceeding with confidence that this time it will be a better job, using elements from your technique and respecting the fret crowns. Best to you.

Hello again Ad, I followed your advice not to provide any extra relief on bass side. With the fingerboard sanded dead flat and all slots deepened prior to the refret, it has alleviated the buzzing problems. My Thanks to you!

Hello! Tell me please - why do you bend the fretwire for a straight (not radiused) classical fingerboard?
@advankuijk
@advankuijk 6 жыл бұрын
that way the studs on the tang have a better grip in the wood, because they move a little sidewards when I hammer the fret down.

I knew you would say that. There is another side of the coin to that: when it's time to refret the frets will more likely chip the wood around the studs when taken out. However... how often do they really refret classical guitars?

Why do you fret after gluing the fingerboard to the neck rather than before? It seems easier to fret then glue
@advankuijk
@advankuijk 6 жыл бұрын
That is easier indeed, but fretting has a great impact on the fingerboard and neck. When you fret a 6 mm. thick board it will be wrapped and bowed after fretting. That way it is impossible to judge how it wil act when glued to the neck. Chances are you have to start all over after glueing.

Ad, does your fingerboard have any radius, or is it sanded completely flat?

what is the reason to curve the fret wire¿ elegant guitar by the way!.
@advankuijk
@advankuijk Жыл бұрын
They need to be bent before insertion, otherwise the ends will have a tendency to pop up out of the slots. Hammering and glue by themselves will not hold a straight fret in a curved form for long. If anything, the common approach is to slightly over-bend them so that the middle of the arch sits higher than the fretboard, so that when they're hammered/pressed in the fret tangs are forced sideways along the length of the fret into the wood giving them better grip.
