They have a CD called The Sounds of Lockdown which has some of the music they put out during lockdown. Their creativity and drive to put out new music and videos even under less-than-ideal conditions (they were recording their singing parts in their respective closets), really helped a lot of us get through some tough times. I work in healthcare and was quite busy during that time, and their songs were so uplifting during difficult times.

I appreciated your reference to the “arr.” There’s another possibility, too. Here we have a “Talk Like a Pirate” Day, this year it’s September 19th. People who participate go around saying “arr,” “aye matey” “shiver me timbers,” and other piratey phrases. Some even dress up a bit similar to the way they are in this video.

How good are these guys? The fun & energy in this is infectious. This was done during quarantine so none of the guys were even together. The editing of this was great & was done in the Tik Tok style. Love all the guys parts, with Tim's rumbling bass underlying it all. And Adam's beatboxing is phenomenal as always including sea swells & castanets. Amazing how he increased the tempo from one song to another. They recently released a professional live recording of this medley.

Sea Shanties have been popular (especially in pubs and bars) in New England since the whaling days. The work songs have such strong rhythms and simple words that allow any motley crew to join in, the choruses at least. The extended use of Tim's bass and Adam's creative "castanets" added great flavor. The commentary on the chords enriched my appreciation.

Do not feel bad about not knowing those last shanty's, I don't think many of us did know about them before this medley. Adam's castanets, like his "no-monica", (Take a listen to "Ain't Goin' Down til the Sun Comes up for a couple of fun solos with the "no-monica"), sound is simply amazingly accurate. How he can be so fast at producing those sounds is mind boggling. What I was impressed most by was the ending of the medley - They took us back through all the different shanty's in reverse order as sung until they brought it all back to the last one again to end it. Overall, an amazing arrangement by Adam Chance and recorded under a difficult conditions.

Thanks for the lesson, Sir. Loved it. Learned stuff. Habitual factoid... I would say Chance and Rob are more New England whalers from the north. Adam and Austin are Southern pirates. Austin's from Georgia. Georgia has a little island off Savannah called Tybee which was a pirate haven. From Savannah down the coast of Florida is all pirate county. Tybee has a pirate fest every Columbus Day where the entire town goes pirate. It's so much fun. Even the road signs say ARRR THERE BE TRAFFIC. We even went on a recreation of a pirate schooner for a cruise down the Savannah river. St. Augustine in Florida has the pirate museum. Either one could be where Austin got that shirt.

Hah! At last I have something in common musically with Sir Hairless! I also knew the first two songs in the medley, but didn't know the others until hearing them here. This video/medley is just so much fun! Just don't ever let Austin have a sword again - he seems to think it's a baseball bat! There were a bunch of Tik Toks created a couple of years ago which used this medley to perform a relatively short dance routine - if you'd like to see some, just search for Sea Shanty Dance and you'll find a number of them.

I only knew one shanty to begin with. Chance loves shanties and brought the idea to the boys during Covid. Tim didn’t move much as he was standing in a boat. You can tell Austin majored in musical theater with the sword (think it’s a family members sword). You’re about the only reactor to hear both the castanets and the water sound that Adam does in the last song. This went viral during Covid and attracted the game maker Ubisoft to them. They asked them to write a new shanty for their game Skull and Bones. Chance wrote a banger and you can see the video (along with a lyric video and a short live video they did for the Ubisoft crowd). There is music in it (which I think Ubisoft wanted). It’s great! Good reaction SH. Yeah I liked that last shanty….you can dance to it. 😍😄

Sea shanty you ask, Sir Hairless? See Adam Chance, he loves and writes them. In fact, you can react to a shanty that Chance wrote for a video game company called UbiSoft. The game is called "Skull And Bones" with the shanty being the same name. I learned Drunken Sailor and Santiana (o) years and years ago. The others I heard for the first time during the COVID shanty vid craze. In many folk songs, changes often occur in lyrics because they are learned aurally. The former president of México was actually Antonio López de Santa Anna. I learned the song as Santiano which I rather prefer lyrically because of its assonance with México, go, gold, and snow.

Tim was dressed as "Jack Sparrow" , Chance was dressed as "Steve Zissou" from the movie "The Life Acquatic with Steve Zissou", Rob was dressed as "Smee" from "Peter Pan", Austin was dressed as "Sinbad" and I don't remember what Adam's costume was. It was also a specific character, I believe.

I saw their video when Covid was here. It's a fun song and catches you . Chris Martin from Coldplay was the first one I saw, and also Keith Urban who I like and he is a country singer from Australia. He's also great guitar player and good on the banjo, and a lot of others. I was impressed by them. ,💖R/A🎼

Thanks Maria! You didn't know either of the first two? Btw I can't find a comment you left on a video of mine quite recently...it was a long comment so I was waiting til I have a bit more time to properly read it and respond; have been looking for it but can't find it! Do you remember which video it was on?

@@SirHairless You're welcome, Sir! No, I didn’t know any them… my knowledge on sea shanties is a shameful-full zero😅As for that long comment, I ended up deleting it because I noticed you skipped it, so, I thought it could contain some kind of undesirable/unnecessary information or some kind of misunderstanding (sometimes I write weird things without noticing it can mean something completely different from what I was trying to say)... Sorry for creating a mess!

@@Maria...-mo5qm Haha that's you and me both with the little/no sea shanty knowledge Oh no, I didn't skip it for any reasons like that! I was just in a hurry when I was going through the comments and I wanted to give some time to your comment, so I left it as unmarked (from my perspective, I can filter comments based on if I've responded to them/"loved" them or not, so by not responding it means I can find it at a later date when I look for it 😊) ! Every few days (or whenever I get a free hour here or there) I go through comments I've not reacted to, which is how I try to make sure I've reacted to every comment I'm sorry you thought I was ignoring it due to bad reasons I noticed your comment contained some recommendations, which is why I wanted to dedicate time to reading your comment - in case it was something I could watch there and then when I went back to it! In future, if I 'ignore' your comment, it's not out of bad intentions! I will always aim to get back to it at a later time to respond or react - even if it's a number of days Naturally, as I release more videos I receive more comments, so some might get lost in the ether, but I do my best!

As you know, I'm a PTX girl, but I have listened to a few Home Free arrangements and I agree with you, they are very solid on their musicality and harmonies. I heard this one during lockdown and thought it was a lot of fun. I sang sea shanties including Wellerman with one of my choirs during lockdown and they are very satisfying to sing because they're generally joyful, fun and easy. As always, I really appreciate your musical knowledge and analysis. Thanks! 😊

I love this one from HF, too. It’s so fun and I love medleys in general. But I think Wellerman is my favorite shanty. Did you happen to see VoicePlay’s cover of Wellerman with Anthony? It’s so good and funny too. There’s a short but also a full version in their video section.

Sea Shanties are shipboard work songs, and are not specifically pirate related. I'm old, so I wasn't using TikTok, and the only one that I had heard before this medley was Drunken Sailor, heard in a harbor tavern scene in a 1950s black and white episode of Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce). I, too, love Adam's castanets.

Always enjoy your analysis and I would have laughed so much to see your “from home” version of a sea shanty dude? I mean for all I know you might have a secret closet of costumes at the ready? My problem with a Sea Shanty is my same problem with the song “Jolene” by Dolly. You cannot get it out of your head? 5 hours later you will be chopping onions for dinner and be singing a sea shanty while living in land locked Oklahoma where the nearest sea is like 15 hours away or something? 😬 And you know what is about to happen? Thanks SH! T ✌🏻 😂

One of my favourite pics of me as a kid (around 7 years old) was a pirate costume made "from home" stuffs - was a mighty fine outfit if I do say so myself I guess you'll need to find your local swimming pool and sing the shanties next to that

Great analysis. This is such a fun video! What I noticed this time was that their video at times mimicked those sea shanty video clips you showed at the beginning of your analysis. Another subtle allusion. I was never a fan of country music, but I'll listen to Home Free any time! Several have mentioned this: I hope you do Brother in Arms soon! Your videos have helped me understand why I love them so much.

@@SirHairless The song is from a game that is set in space so people started calling it a space shanty. I thought shanties were related to sea but I did some research and found them described as a “go to work” type of chant. So, I guess it fits but I’m definitely no expert there. I love the song though, it is a total earworm!!

This video became viral primarily in Asia where it was used in TicToc dance challenges. People in other parts of the world also used the song for dance challenges. It was because of the video's popularity that Ubisoft contacted them to create a sea shanty for Skull and Bones their game in development. Chance loves sea shanties. He was the one who persuaded Home Free to do the original sea shanty medley during lockdown. So naturally Chance was the one who wrote the sea shanty Skull and Bones for Ubisoft's game. Personally, I think Home Free's video of a live performance of The Sea Shanty Medley is better than the original lockdown video. The crowd is electrifying with its enthusiasm. Home Free sounds better live.

This is their now their final song, in the encore. And it’s a great choice. The lead is pretty well divided between Chance, Rob and Austin. But Tim and Adam do some interesting things too. (Yes you can hear Adam do the crashing wave sounds in Santiana) Most of the crowd is standing and singing along. That it’s not complex, makes it easy to join in with them. The increasing tempo builds excitement. And the way they summarize all five songs at the end makes a satisfying conclusion.

In the beginning Chance is wearing a t-shirt with a big Z. That’s for Zissou, a film starring Bill Murray as Steve Zissou, an eccentric oceanographer. Right up to Chance’s alley! So one of my 2 I wish I had video taped it moments was a few years ago when my son who was maybe 51/2 at the time and obsessed with yodeling and my niece who was maybe 41/2 at the time and was obsessed with opera had decided that Wellerman was their current favorite song. They were running around the house in a circuit pretending to be chickens while belting out the song. In case you are wondering, an operatically yodeled sea shanty sung in chicken squawks is absolutely as funny as it sounds. I was cooking dinner at the time and my hands were messy and I was just grateful they were keeping themselves occupied so I figured I would just tape it the next time they did it (because yes they had done it before just not for as long) and so I didn’t tape it. I loved this but I will never be able to listen to the Wellerman again without a part of my brain adding operatic yodeling chickens. 😂
