"What is that?" at ~ 2:26? Sounds like Tim is starting on the C2, going down a whole step to Bb1, back up to F2, then landing on C2. Repeat C2, Bb1, then G2, F2, Eb2, D2, and landing again on C2.

It took me about a year to be able to hit Tim’s notes comfortably. Just kept pushing my voice by attempting, I think I’m technically a baritone but can sing upto Austin’s mid range. Occasionally I can hit Austin’s highs but it’s hard, trying to push up next. Now I can fully access those low notes simply by how it feels, accessing those folds feels different than higher notes.

Have you ever listened to Geoff Castellucci? He's a notorious low bass (has a channel) but I find singing whole songs that low sounds pretty terrible (and I like a bass) This shanty is the first time I've heard bass that low that actually works.
@margfried8796
@margfried8796 9 ай бұрын
and this is why I love Tim. People love the low notes but for me, it's all about the tone. Tim is the only bass I know that can sing that low and sound good.
@chrisd7047
@chrisd7047 9 ай бұрын
She's familiar with Geoff. Tim's consistently extra low bass in this song works over the length of the song because it's not the feature of the song; Tim doesn't sing any of the verses. He's simply doing the primary function of a bass line: providing a ground floor, a root note for the chord the harmonies create. Tubas do the same thing with the same notes for an orchestra or concert band.

Sea shanties were sung by sailors, in the day of sail. These were used as entertainment, and as a means to keep a crew in time while doing hard onerous tasks, such as hoisting sails, anchors, sanding the deck... Sometimes the same melody would have different lyrics, depending on the area of the world, and the melodies were commonly stolen from different songs.

Every time I hear the shanty "What Do We Do With A Drunken Sailor?" I keep hearing the next line as being something I heard a group do at a Scottish festival: "put him on a bus to Tijuana, put him on a bus to Tijuana, put him on a bus to Tijuana, early in the mornin'". 😂

Wait until you listen to their original sea shanty,"Skull and Bones". BUT you must listen to the live version because in the recorded version they pulled back Tim's bass so it didn't overpower Chance, who is singing lead. There is lots of bass in it, especially the beginning. Tim's bass will blow you away. They were asked to write it for their upcoming video game of the same name. Chance actually wrote the song. The live performance is from the Ubisoft Forward presentation during the Summer Gamefest, earlier this year.

He's also the best storyteller on youtube, as his story time with Tim presents an interesting take on life on the road...and seafood. Oh, mah dear ... you just ain't hung out in the right folkie circles. While everyone these days knows "The Wellerman" and "The Drunken Sailor," the others are rather older and far more obscure. "Cape Cod Girls" is a pump shanty (sung while working the bilge pumps) and "Leave Her, Johnny" is a capstan shanty (sung while winding the anchors up on their capstans). I learned both from a terminally unknown cassette called _Nautical but Nice_ by Caryl P. Weiss and the Beached Buoys, released in Austin, Texas in 1992. "Santy Anno" I know from a far old vinyl recording by The Highwaymen (no, not _those_ Highwaymen) in 1960. The lyrics suggest it was a halyard shanty (meant to sing while raising sail), but modern performances make it sound more like a pump shanty.

OK, so the obvious take away from this is Tim's basement bass. Lordy! Then there's A Capella castanets because, why not? I mean Adam Rupp. Then there's Chance who was the guiding force for the Sea Shanty stuff in the first place. Rob has the most waxed mustache on u-tube. Then there is Austin in all his Johnny Deppery glory - (but why is the rum gone?) Lord have mercy. These guys are a hoot and a half. BTW from what I have read, Tim was in his back yard somewhere in Texas standing in a rowboat dressed as Capt Jack Sparrow, singing is guts out. Imagine the reactions of his neighbors. Unless, being in Texas, they just said, 'well, that's just Tim, I reckon.' (I'm from the South so I can get away with saying that.) This is an amazing video. When you take into account the transition from black and white to color and the fading back. Just amazing.

The castanets are notable but rarely noted. Except for you and @flyflorida2001 (elsewhere in the comments). Otherwise, I enjoyed Rob singing in a lower part of his range, at least he usually doesn't sing in that part of his range for his solo parts. For all I know Rob may avail himself of that part of his range when singing harmony, but my ear is not refined enough to tell.
