In this video, Evan discusses his build plan for his Coyote swapped 1967 Mustang Fastback. Spoiler alert: It's going to be a restomod with modern components packaged subtly into an original appearing car, with the exception of a lowered stance and a twist on original Shelby style wheels!
Shout out to Nigel on IG @ponycar67fback - it's his awesome Mustang that was the basis for the render that can be seen in the video with the black wheels and lowered stance. His car definitely has some elements that will be incorporated into this build!
For the Coyote engine, the plan is the big dog Aluminator 5.2 (52XS). It's going to be mated to a Tremec Magnum 6 speed. Tires will be as wide as possible, aiming for 255s up front and 285s out back.
Interior is going to be the factory luxury/deluxe interior for the 1967 Mustang, as it's one of the best looking interiors of any muscle car on the planet. This 67 Mustang wasn't a factory Mustang GT, but it did come with a big 351 Windsor motor that Evan has all ready pulled out. The next phase of this restoration is going to involve a lot of metal work. She's definitely not a muscle car of the week yet, but little by little, this street rod will take shape and we'll keep you all updated on the progress of the build right here.

I watched your first video, and now after watching this one I had to subscribe to continue to watch your build! I really like your logical, planned approach to what you are going to do to this car. And YES, black is the color to go with on your Mustang. This seems like more than enough engine for this car, but glad to hear your plans to strength the frame and put some modern suspension under the car. You can't have that much power, and not be able have matching handling! Good luck with this build, and thanks for sharing it with us!

I owned a 67fastback 390 auto. for 23 years. It was a chore driving an old car like that. Brakes? Scary. Suspension? Laughing out loud. I loved to burn rubber from light to light. But stopping? Now that was a thrill. Taking corners fast? I don't recommend it unless your fond of rolling a car. The looks were enough to put up with all the negatives. Uden Uden.

You have a solid plan and I can tell that you have done a ton of research. Your plan is almost exactly what I have done to mine. Here are a few things to consider as I learned from my build. 1. Hood clearance - Do some research on the front end suspension. I am assuming you are going with some type of mustang II type suspension. I went with TCI (Total Cost Involved) Front suspension kit. I love the kit, but I can not fit the stock engine cover with the stock hood. There is plenty of room with it off but modifications had to be made to the hood structure to get the stock cover to fit. This kit has the cross member sitting so low that I can not fit a low profile hydraulic jack underneath it. so the height of the engine was not a lack of trying to lower the engine as far as they could from an engineering standpoint. So if you want to run a stock turn signal hood, your only option may be a stock intake. Of course anything is possible, I have been known to be wrong from time to time. 2. Brakes- totally agree with you on the manual brakes. I run 3 willwood compact master cylinders (one for front brakes, one for rear brakes, and one for the clutch) and I have 12" rotors and 4 piston brakes and I can stop on a dime. I would highly recommend the 3 master cylinder layout. Willwood sells a fire wall kit that neatly arranges them. 3. Suspension - I run a TCI Mustang II IFS (like stated above) and TCI 3 Link in the rear. Not only does the car respond really well cornering, the frame is super stiff with their subframe connectors, and the kit is very reasonably priced. There are a lot of good products though. 4. Interior - With a transplanting a coyote with a 6 speed transmission, you will have to modify the transmission tunnel. I have yet to see a coyote swap with a Tremec transmission that has not had to modify the trans tunnel. You may get away with out modifying the tunnel with the stock Getrag. I am not sure through. With that being said, there will have to be modifications made to the floor console in order to get your it to fit right. My trans tunnel cam up probably between 1-2" from the stock height. just something to thing about. 5. Seats - spot on with the seats, with any type of aggressive cornering, those seats you have in your plan will prevent you from sliding out of your seat. Good luck and have fun! Plans change and budgets get blown pretty quickly, HA! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I have been through it and I went as far as mini tubs ( which unless you really need fat tires, i don't recommend. sooo much work!) I have a ton of pictures if you need so see anything specific. I think you and I are one a few of the same FB mustang pages as well. Blessings, Aaron

Excellent choice on the wheels, you can never go wrong with the 427s. This old lady will scream with that motor. Will the six speed need a bigger transmission hump? I am sure that you already know where to find all of the that things that you will need but Mustangstofear has all of the Coyote parts if you need anything. Best of luck. I look forward to watching your progress. Oh, I am with you completely on the "I'm gonna drive it" mentality. Only way to be.

I had a Raven Black ‘67 FB years ago, did a mild resto mod with a 351W. One safety upgrade I did was to replace the solid ‘67 steering column with a collapsible ‘68 column. I also put ‘69 high back seats for some neck protection. They looked great, not out of place at all. Also added shoulder harness seat belts from a Ranger pickup. It all looked “stock” and made me feel a little safer. The roll bar is a good idea, I didn’t go that far.

I know I am a late comer to this build, but with that engine/trans combo I think I personally would go with the full frame. I owned a '68 fastback and the unibody does have a tendency to flex. I had a crate 351 Cleveland engine and an FMX auto with a 9 inch rear end. The stock suspension and brakes made for a sometimes scary ride. Wishing you the best of luck. It's your car, build it the way you want to and enjoy the journey.

The '69 Shelby roll bar will bolt up to the shoulder harness attachment points on a '68 I don't know if the '67 has them, but I did have to use a cable come along to pull in the roll bar to get it in place. The body on the earlier model was a little narrower than the '69. Otherwise once in place you can reinforce the attachment point, drill your holes, and bolt it in.

One thing you may want to do is add a set of 1968 torque boxes the 1967 only had one I can't remember what side it was on but the extra one will stiffen the chassis up a bit and mostly be out of sight and then make sure when you are doing the frame rails to let a frame shop do it to make sure it is square that looks to have had damage to the passenger front and was "fixed" at one time the frame shop will let you know about that when you get the rails redone and yes while you have it tore down do all 4 floor pans.... This is a beautiful specimen with all projects there will be a hang up here and there. I miss my 1968. you may get lucky at a salvage yard for the drivetrain finding a 2018 totaled mustang with low miles those Coyote motors are Ford's answer to the Chevrolet LS motors I've heard of a few "you tubers " adding blowers to these and having them daily driven with well over 600+ hp at the wheels with over 100k miles on the motors... just my 2 cents. You may want to check Performance Suspension Tech if they are still around to see what they offer. I'm not sure I got married 20 years ago and I know the game has changed since I let go of my babies a 67 fastback (I-6 with a total v-8 conversion in works) and my 69 Mach1

I kept the stock suspension but swapped heavier sway bars, Koni shocks, solid heavy export brace and Monte Carlo bar. Handled well, but still had the solid rear axle so not ideal. Biggest issue was steering: I swapped the original manual steering for power using original parts, big mistake. Way too much play. Don’t know what options you have today but i would look for a rack and pinion setup.

Although I am more the "period correct" guy for my personal projects I like your plans very much to create a sleeper with modern components. For the color: I like the idea. @nefaurora

In order to drop in a Coyote, You'll pretty much have to lop off the entire front end and replace the entire front end of the car for strength.... I'd advise against it on this fastback...If you want to drop in a fast motor...drop in a crate 347 stroker or "427" crate motor... Don't go so crazy as a Coyote motor......My personal opinion..
@ClassicNation
@ClassicNation 4 жыл бұрын
Why would the entire front have to be replaced? With the exception of the shock tower removal, and the addition of the cross member, what else needs to be replaced?
@chuck_machine
@chuck_machine 4 жыл бұрын
@@ClassicNation That's just it. On unibody cars, the shock towers ARE structural and you cannot remove them w/o supporting the frame rails some other way. You're going to need to do quite a bit of research and soul searching. You'll find that most aftermarket solutions are not really designed and developed to the same degree as OEM components. Remove the shock towers and you transfer ALL the load to the frame rails. They were never designed to support the loads they will see from even street driving. Will it work? For a while, yes. Keep in mind that 95% of these cars are only driven occasionally, usually to a car show, then back into the garage. Start racking up the street miles and you'll soon find every single weak point on the car.

I agree , look at the width of the 351w.Wonder why the headers were not installed.The coyote is wider than the 351w I'd say 3 or 4 inches.Plus the weight . If there is any issues after installing the motor could be a major problem having room to do anything.With all the other costs involved with this build, you could go buy a new mustang for almost the same price and have a warranty plus a suspension which would be superior to anything you could ever achieve in your build.The 351w is tight, a 302 stroked would be idea.Put EFI on it and there's your fuel mileage.Still have have close to 400 hp and leave those shock towers alone.Why use a coyote when you can never get the handling out of the suspension.

Are there any cheaper “restomod” engines to build a more reliable driver? I’ve seen the fuel injected 5.0 swaps from the foxbody mustangs but they don’t make a lot of power.
@ClassicNation
@ClassicNation 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are several cheaper options. You could always do the 5.0 out of a fox and add boost (supercharger or turbo). You could also do a LS swap. Or, you could rebuild any of the old engines (289, 302, 351, 390) and you could add EFI to it. FiTech or Holley are both making really good kits are are $1k-$2k and can add reliability to an older engine if combined with a fresh rebuild. Lots of inexpensive options!

I’m building a “budget-friendly” combo for my 68 fastback. Hope to have on the road at some point this summer. Combo is a 400+ hp 347 with Holley Sniper FI, HD Tremec 5-spd and 9” rear end with Trac Lok. 16” wheels and stock suspension with 1-1/8” front sway bar, QA1s, and 1-pc traction bars.

Mustangs from 1967 are not "matching numbers" To quote Greg Zyla More Content Now "I’d like to add something, however, as in my opinion there is a much larger and more hobby damaging issue regarding the use of phrases like “numbers matching,” “factory installed,” “born with,” or “original” when describing Fords. The truth is that, except for the Mustang Boss 302′s, there is no such thing as a matching numbers Ford. To explain, Ford did not stamp a number on any part that relates to the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the car. They only had a date code cast into the part. "
@ClassicNation
@ClassicNation 4 жыл бұрын
"Ford did not stamp a number on any part that related to the Vehicle Identification Number of the car" is actually an incorrect statement. The VIN is stamped on the inner fender on the drivers side. What I think you mean to say is "any engine part".

Go buy a new Mustang if you want a modern canyon carver instead of ruining a classic. The body in white will never be stiff enough and suspension balanced enough to be worth it...by the time you’re broke. Upgrade the brakes, control arms, springs, rack, sway bars, and bushings, and put a nice period correct reliable motor with a 6-spd Tremec. Stock looking wheels with modern tires and keep the existing ride height so you don’t ruin the proportions of the car. You’re just making headaches for the next owner who will restore the value of this car. And for god sakes do not cut the shock towers or add modern gages. Would like to put the Eleanor and restomod people on a barge and sale them away. Preserve and honor the era. Don’t butcher it with this tacky bs. Cheers!

It's worth is $14k, so I don't think putting a motor into a car that currently doesn't have a motor will ruin and devalue its worth. Also - a 289 can't measure up to the Aluminator 5.2 on any scale. A 380 isn't an engine. Lastly, I don't follow MCA rules. I do what I like. :) A restomod definitely doesn't have to be your preference, but your listed reasons for why it's a bad idea are inaccurate.
