Often times it will be necessary to use a metal aluminum trim instead of a bull nose to finish exposed tile edges, in this video I show how to make a clean crisp cut. Miters can be especially difficult if the correct tools are not used. A chop saw with a special metal cutting blade can make quick easy work of these cuts. I often use Schluter aluminum jolly trim to finish tile edges when bullnose is not available or the metal is the desired look. I will just caution anyone that uses this method to be very careful and to use all necessary protective gear as the spinning metal blade of the chop saw is very dangerous and will easily cut through flesh and bone.

I take a scrap piece if wood and use it for backing. wrap the profile around the square corner of the board and that solves you problem of it catching. I like your tips. keep up the good work.

Here is a tip. Cut the leg with some snip to get it out of the way. That's the part that the blade cacthes and mangles. Wear some glasses as well.

Sal, are there any issues with using anodized aluminum trim in the shower? It’s a little too late to ask this question since we already installed it in our shower but I’m seeing a lot of negative comments about aluminum and pitting or corroding in the long haul.

Thanks for the upload, I love installing profiles. Have you seen the LED channel profiles? They're from an Italian company. I haven't seen them in person yet but I'm dying to try them out they give a super modern look.

Hey Sal, I used shluter edging around niche. The customer pick out all materials and now that it's up she has a better look and doesn't like it, because the shluter is but more whiter than tile. Is there any way to fix this without demo. Is able to be painted being it's in a shower?. What would you recommend

Setting the trim on a scrap of wood when cutting will eliminate the trim from bending or kicking up on you. Especially if you have to trim a hair off.

Yes I use Door stop as that inset piece of wood in the metal. When I cut my 45 or 90 on the miter saw. I carry 2 ft lengths in my Tile supply bins.

Hi Sal, which method do you prefer, Installing with the profile anchor legs inside the niche, or the anchor legs outside the niche on the wall? This video looks like you already set the wall tile up to the edge of the niche first and installing trim inside. Do you have a video on this?

wet saw with speed square works for me lay trim against speed square put on glasses less chance of stock jumping around never have cut this way why cause just one more piece of equip to lug around and plug in besides looks dangerous to me cheers either way has to be mitered

Great video one thing I never see mentioned is, the tile u have around niche is it flush with inside, or do u leave it a grout line short, or when applying trim with thinset does that build it out. I guess what I’m saying where does the grout line come from

On the inside of the Metal L there is a leg to give you proper space for the tile, on the flat side of the trim I use a wedge between the metal and the tile to create that space.

they can ,but for a clean miter you need a chop saw.

When cutting on the wetsaw set the pieces so the rotation of the blade to cut toward the back, that way the slag will go toward the part behind the tile. Use a diamond file to clean up the edge.

I don’t think miter corners makes a whole lot of difference plus it takes a cop saw for perfect cuts and it takes that much longer to do, and precision…

I don’t think my contractor installed it correctly the metal trim doesn’t line up with the tile but sticks out a bit and neither do the corners which are sharp to touch. I feel like you can cut yourself if you aren’t careful.

The principle of the tiling of the inside neich is wrong. You should tile the bottom and top first and then the two sides. The back tile should sit on top of the ledge not behind it. The same principle applies to steps and Windows. This way the water will not sit on the joint.

It was there and he said I could for a couple of cuts I needed, he was about to change the blade and said he would wait till I was done. Just saved me setting up my own chop saw.
