As ever, a wonderful video made of the amazing difference a professional cleaning makes to a painting. As you said, good for another 100 years. I often wonder what the artists would think of the longevity of their work… I look forward to seeing the lovely Harriet again, hopefully in the next video - you are a terrible tease!! 😁🖌🎨

Ha !! Glad you enjoyed it, Harriet is coming , have been waiting for a few things to arrive and also had other jobs to complete. I often look at paintings that are created today and wonder how long they will last. Quality paintings using the right materials and techniques will outlive us !! If cared for correctly and not banished to the garage !! Or the stables as happened in the old days !!

The first cleaning was so dramatic that I never expected the second to be even more so. I loved the frame restoration, and the mention of how time and cost restraints affect the materials and methods you will choose. And the carving & dusting of bronze powder looks *so good*

It's wonderful to see the artist's original vision in the colors as they're exposed via cleaning. Beautiful work as always, the painting and the restoration.

@@Bloomfield_Art_Restoration yes, I have started watching all the others that I've missed out on. It's interesting to see the process of how the paintings get cleaned up. I always thought that paintings were best behind glass, that way they're more protected from the environment. However, glass back in the days when the paintings were first done, glass would have been hard to get or horrendously expensive. When I was a young girl I wanted to do what you do, but in there wasn't the opportunities for girls to work in that type of field. Then of course life happened and I walked down a different path, which was just as interesting and satisfying. Cheers from Australia!

Do you ever remove the painting from the stretcher and flatten the painting to remove the marks left from the stretcher? The stretcher can be seen from the front of the painting

Really enjoyed this episode! If you get a moment, would really like to know what that reddish clay is made of ...or, better yet, a product name if it's not proprietary. While I was watching that part of your video, I was imagining that stuff shrinking and falling off in a few years. Of course, I had faith that you knew what you were doing and the shellac treatment appeared to lock everything together. Thinking now that the clay might just be actual CLAY, and the shellac binds it...Hmmm. Your bronze powder technique really wowed me... those brown insets just vanished in an instant! As always, the painting conservation was top notch. Thank you for another entertaining and informative video. Cheers! ⚘

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it, a few elements of my own and then the shellac as a binder and once absorbed really solidifies, a little trick I learnt from an architectural faience company many years ago …the bronze powders are great for matching and let you add just the right amount to bring a frame back to life ..

Amazing the difference cleaning makes! I visited a small museum this past weekend, and saw several paintings with that tell-tale yellowish tinge. My first thought was that they need a pro like you to consult with them!

Incredible difference. Could you have used felt under the canvas next to the back of the stretcher is ease the imprint of the stretcher lines from the front of the painting? Or prevent additional damage? Beautiful job.

Nice work on the frame. I've restored numerous gilded frames - some really interesting/ornate ones. I've got a shoebox (as I'm sure do you) filled with latex moulds and extra corner pieces. Often, the frame (especially Victorian ones) are far more interesting than the painting within.
