Automotive engine de-greaser does NOT dissolve salt. White vinegar or CLR Cleaner will dissolve calcium and salt deposits from engine and internal cooling parts, both harmless to plastics, rubber and metal parts - not to mention, white vinegar is very economical !

You can also combine equal parts rubbing alcohol and white vinegar to remove efflorescence.

I use a garden leaf blower to dry the engine and under cowl after washing. This drives out all the water and helps the dressing work and protect better.

GUNK Official - here is just a suggestion from a consumer who does not have your level of understanding about your product and who is here looking for education and practical techniques. I have absolutely no idea what this part of your comment means; "designed to have low VOC's so it's safer to use". The GREATEST thing about Born Again Boating's channel is that he is an accomplished, knowledgeable, master marine technician and he has the ability to take the complex and make it simple to understand. I am looking at the notes I took while watching this video and I had GUNK degreaser/cleaner and GUNK protector/shine on my shopping list. Somebody else commented that white vinegar is superior in dissolving salt. So as somebody who will never have Aaron's level of skill, or your in depth knowledge of GUNK'S product line, but who is determined not to stay completely ignorant either, since I have no idea what "designed to have low VOC's so it's safer to use" means I'm not sure whether to buy the GUNK products or just white vinegar? The marginal cost difference between the purchases is not significant to me, I want the "better" product to protect my 20+ year old small outboard. This video of Born Again Boating SOLD me on your GUNK products, now another commenter has me questioning that decision, and I am unable to use your comment to help me decide. Knowing me I'll probably buy, and use, all of the above just to make sure I get the best result.

Now I’m going to sound daft! Cleaning is part of the pride of ownership. You’ve worked hard, spent a lot of money and have something to show for it. If you look after it you get a better connection with what is essentially an inanimate object. The big but, for all the naysayers, is that when you go to sell it yours will sell quicker and for more cash than the unloved heap of junk that’s also up for sale in the boatyard. If that’s not a good enough reason to look after and clean your boat, bike or car I don’t know what is. Great series of videos and I may be in a cooler part of the world but the water is still salty over here. Stay safe!

Bought a new Yamaha 150 just over 3 years ago that sprayed all over its metal surfaces w/ CRC Corrosion Inhibitor (2 coats over a 24hr period). After 960 hours on that thing, I have no rust and the salt just comes right off with a hose. Hose the inside once a month and then a little Boeshield T-9 after, and the engine looks like its never been turned over!

I have used the gunk products and they do a pretty good job. Instead of using the gunk protectant, try stoner trim shine. It dries completely and isn’t tacky so it doesn’t attract dirt. It’s also good for protecting wiring and rubber as well. Oreillys has it.

Most of the newer engines have a garden hose port where you can attach a garden hose and no mouse ears. Will it flush the same way or do you have to still put on the mouse ears to flush through the thermostat and lower unit? Thanks
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Hello, nope, the flush port runs through the whole engine. No need for ear muffs, unless you plan on running the engine at RPM's higher than 1,000. Then you should put some muffs on it. Otherwise you can flush the engine all you want and even run it at idle without damaging anything :) Thank you!

Hi. I was told flushing my yami150 using flush port while idling motor would be fine. I tried but about 3 to 5 mins into it my overheat alarm went off so I shut her down. It is worth mentioning that telltale has water when boat is in water and also when flushing with the muffs although boat motor has to be trimmed out a bit. Seems fine but wonder why I overheat when using flush port. All salt water so I flush after every trip Appreciate you!

I would really like to know how and why all that salt is in there. Like where is the water getting in from? Never seen that before except from a Honda I once had. That Honda was terrible for water leaking I the cowling
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
A lot of times the water gets forced in depending on how the spray comes off the hull and the trim tabs. Even a transducer can cause a lot of spray up towards the cowlings. Plus, these two-part cowlings, aren't the most watertight cowlings. Don't get me wrong, I love these cowlings compared to the one-piece, extremely heavy cowlings. That's probably beacuse they are light and easy to mess with :) but then also whenever the seas are rough and you're fighting fish, just the wave action on the back of the boat can force water into the cowlings and then it just creates a salty engine lol

Awesome video. Im one of those people that used to be scared of popping open the cowling lol. When flushing the engine after a trip, is it okay to use the port flush or do you recommend using the ear muffler to open the thermostat? I have a yamaha 150 4 stroke and haven't found any ear muffler that stay on well
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 3 жыл бұрын
The flush on the 150 is fine, it will flush out the system. If you want to run it on the muffs once or twice every couple of months to open the thermostat that isn't a bad idea either

Hi. Really appreciate your page and all the great info. I have a 2016 250hp Optimax w/ 260hr on a 21ft Contender. -What additional info, pro-tips or tweaks, in addition to whats in this video, would you recommend when cleaning my Opti? Im a novice and dont want to do something dumb. There seem to be a lot of electronic connections on the Opti vs this engine. -Also what are your thoughts regarding 656 vs fluid film vs the yamaha product you described here for protection after cleaning? -I was told I can spray the CRC656 literally on everything (plastic, rubber, metal). True? Avoiding intake and flywheel of course. MANY thanks!
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You can just be a little more selective when spraying the engine down. When it comes to the 656, I don't have a lot of experience with that specific product, but as long as it is not petroleum based like wd-40 I don't see why you couldn't use it the same way the others are used :) Hope this helps!

Hi. Love the vids ...i could do this for life too . What blue grease are you using when doing the general maintenance? (Ask if you can; reliability wise , what brand you prefer?)
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The blue grease is Johnson Evinrude Triple Guard Marine Grease ( Here's a link for it on Amazon: amzn.to/328IvD9 ) This is pretty good stuff, I like Mercury's High-Performance Grease too though: ( High Performance Grease: amzn.to/303EE8h Then their 2-4-C is good too: amzn.to/2LthKDc ) The only thing about Mercury's grease is that I don't think you can get it in a tube like you can the Evinrude stuff. I like the tube and a little brush because I use a lot of it!
@Danidasanic
@Danidasanic 5 жыл бұрын
@@BornAgainBoating the 2-4-c is what i have here but i have to agree , that blue grease can with the brush is way easier to use . (I got a tube to use with a gun)

@BornAgainBoating

Salt away is a great product, I know a lot of people that use it. You don't have to go overboard with it though, depending on how you use your boat once or twice a year is good!

I only have freshwater boating experience. You didn't show the inside of the engine cowling. Does that area get salt buildup too and require cleaning?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
Freshwater is nice :) A lot of times the cowling has a dampening foam on it and it usually doesn't get the build up like the engine does. So unless it's really bad, then a quick wipe down will clean out the cowling.

Yeah, probably best to be done out of the water if you are going as in depth as this. Every so often you can spray it off in the water that should be fine for just salt build up

Hahah that's funny, I think most people have that same reaction :) They do get a little salty in there and that's a good idea. It's best to try and do it where it can sit and dry out for a day. I think up North it won't dry out as quick as it does down here lol

@BornAgainBoating

I wouldn't worry about it, if you clean it once a year you will be in good shape! It won't be able to damage like it does down here and left for a couple years. With a yearly cleaning, you will be in great shape! If you can get your hands on some Yamashield I think that is the best stuff there is :) for the protectant

This will work for them too, just be more careful around the intake and the carbs to not get water in them. Most two strokes stay pretty clean and oily inside so they usually don't get this dirty :)

@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Hello! Well that depends. I went to MMI and it was a pretty good school, but it cost $35,000! So, if you don't have the money, I don't really recommend you going into $40K in debt. Instead, you can go a different route, which is the route that I took to get into my first real shop. What you want to do is look around your area at all the marina's and dealerships that are close to you. Then go in 10-15 minutes before they open on Monday and see if they could use some help. Some of them will probably say no because you don't have any experience, but you just do that to all of them and do it each week until one of them gives you a job. Then once you get into one of the shops. Try and make friends with the oldest Technician there and just listen to everything they say! Try and do what they say too, make sure you are teachable and willing to work, listening to the way they tell you to do the job. Fast forward a couple years and you'll be a great Marine Technician making good money, going to school and getting manufacture certified!
