This video details how I repurposed an old dishwasher to clean car parts. Forget the hot tank or parts cleaner, give this a try -- the results are amazing!

Great Idea! I was thinking that it would turn the inside black and greasy- but it looks like that isn't the case. I may add one of these to my shop. Way cheaper than a purpose built parts washer and seems to do a pretty good job. Have you dialed in what detergents you use for cast iron and aluminum since you posted this video?

Tried washing an absolutely filthy aluminum intake manifold with just aircraft grade simple green in my spare craigslist dishwasher (no detergent) and it was still pretty dirty. Interestingly a lot of the dirt came off easier when I took it off to scrub it. Of course as always the big problem with cleaning parts is getting into crevices and around grooves and corners. There were a few spots I couldn't get with a nylon brush or my finger and a rag. And that's of course a big part of why a dishwasher or pressure washer should be a lot better. We'll see how the intake turns out now. And also if the cascade causes it to oxidize or discolor. I don't really care if it does as I will eventually get the intake blasted and powder coated, I just want it to be clean to handle for a side project.

Brilliant! Ad for the aluminium Pistons, did you use any detergent at all? Also, have you tried to clean tools this way? If so, another video please :)

heck yeah man / dishwashers rule / that same dishwasher in this video has been permanently mounted in my shop / lol / I think I run it at least twice a month too / thanks for the comment!

It'd be nice if there was a beefed up dishwasher just for these types of situations. Not everyone has room for a full size engine washer.

I've always wondered about this. I'd throw a gallon a purple power in there first
@TacoJoe2 жыл бұрын
I've tried them all and Purple power works great- there's better stuff out there, but it comes with a price and purple power is CHEAP / FYI - Walmart now sells it 2.5 & 5 gallon containers too / I use lots of this stuff (LOL) - thanks for the comment!

Let me know if you did any additional strainer or something similar to help keep chunks of debris out of the drain system. Installing a used washer in my shop soon.

The base/tub on mine has a built in strainer so I need to check it and clean it from time to time - I do try and get the crusty stuff off though before I put them through a cycle / make sure you use heat too - let me know how your install works out and thanks for the comment!

@@TacoJoe - Will do. I'm thinking I'll put the washer up on a pedestal to get it up to a better height for loading/unloading; I may make a video which I'll post here as well. We should all talk the best detergents as well sometime....... What is everyone using that seems to work well?

What detergent did you use? How did you put the vinegar in the dishwasher through the main feed line?
@TacoJoe5 жыл бұрын
I think it was cascade detergent, but any popular brand should work. What really helps the process is the hot heating element paired with detergent. As for the vinegar, I dumped it in the bottom and for the wash (eg- detergent door) I added the baking soda. Usually the first cycle is to fill the bottom and rinse -thus- the vinegar will be mixed as it fills. NOTE - it is important to neutralize the vinegar after it dissolves the rust or the reside left behind will help it re-surface rust even faster. It took me a little trial-error to get it right

@@TacoJoe My ex wife said to only use cascade in the dishwasher after the whole overflowing foam fiasco... I thought the simple green did an outstanding job but everything we ate tasted a little funny after that. Coincidentally I'm not married anymore.

I want to take my tires off my wheels and clean them in the dishwasher. What is cleaner is best for brake pad residue?
@TacoJoe4 жыл бұрын
Give them a quick scrub by hand like you are doing the dishes to knock off the bigger chunks of gunk then load them up / go for it. I'd just stick with normal dish washer detergent for those because by nature, there shouldn't be a lot of grease so you are in effect just cleaning them up
