I haven't tried that. I do use a scraper if it's pretty thick, as you can see in my Tips for heating with wood video, or ashes and water with newspapers also works well.

Even easier - fine steel wool (0000 grade) and....ammonia (I keep mine in a spray bottle)!!! I have tried many tricks and this is BY FAR the easiest so far. NO scrubbing required. 0000 wool will NOT scratch your glass.

@@SethCrosby Hi Seth, Im not off grid on my mountain in Australia at this time, I am in Thailand for 12 months, (That's why i some times refer to myself as an off grid nomad, when I get back to My cabin I surely will try your method, and let you know. As a Explanation comment as to why my heater dirty's the glass a lot, its because i have heavily insulated my cabin and now only need a LOW fire and it does not burn really hot, and I believe this is why it soots up the Glass, cheers mate, No heater over here, ha ha..

Has anybody tried putting magnesium or aluminium cans to the fire box to reduce creosote ?

Gooday Biff The oldtimers told me to put a couple of EMPTY..Steel cans (like Baked bean cans) in the fireplace , said it reduces soot build up in the chimney, I always did that in my wood stove for 30 Years it had a 6 inch flue and never blocked up, and I burnt all sorta wood , including lots of green cypress, cheers mate
