Today we cleaning out the livestock barn. The hay and manure has built up over the winter and it is long overdue for a cleaning. We will take all the material we clean out and fill up one of our compost bins. Hopefully it will make great compost for next year.

I remember helping my grandpa clean out the barn in the spring. It was 2’ deep & it was compacted ! We used a wheelbarrow to get it out of the barn & into the manure spreader via a wide plank ! It seemed like it took a week to clean ! It was all cow manure !

There's nothing to be embarrassed about, it's called farming and believe me since I've started watching videos about farming I've seen other farms that's way more worse than the few goats and chicken stalls that you have to take care of, but all you have to do is just stir up the shavings or straw and keep it fresh. So chin up and don't worry about a thing. Thumbs Up, Y'all did a great job.

@@Bamboo4U2 - I have also heard that its ok to leave some of the old "composted" stuff behind because it helps inoculate the new bedding with the beneficial microbes to start the next batch of healthy bedding. thats part of the benefit of "deep bedding" anyways. But i do like things "clean" so i cant blame them for spraying it out.

@@robtdougherty normally, I'd agree with you, but they have mice and mice droppings can carry some of the most toxic, gnarly crap on Earth. I wonder what the temperature of a compost pile needs to achieve to deal with the toxins in mice droppings. Anyone out there know (a source would be most appreciated)?

We have a small herd of goats (4) and a few dozen chickens. I have gotten into a routine of cleaning the coop and the goat barn once a month through the summer. In the winter, we do the deep litter method. Seems to work well for us and our gravel floor in there. That spring cleaning is always a little more work and I am amazed at the amount of material removed, which like you, is done by hand. For a compost bin, I simply took groups of four pallets I tied with baler twine at the corners. Plenty of air flow and I cut the strings and the sides can disappear. I do not have a front end loader, so makes getting to it and using it in the garden, etc., a little easier for us. Anyway, keep doing what your doing and stay safe!

There is nothing embarrassing about a barn having straw that is used from animals. To save your backs a small wagon or wheel barrow to put the straw in to take outside or better have the tractor outside and tip the barrow into the tractor will help. I'm glad you both were wearing masks very important! In regards to all the Hay watch a Joel Saladin video. Have you thought about having the chickens near a door so they have a place to go out To? That will help with also being able to change the bedding for the chickens on a more frequent basis. Sounds like we will be seeing some videos in the future on how you open up the drains in the barn and how you will be fixing the door and opening to The Barn so you can get your tractor there. And I'm sure you've thought of other projects you can do in the barn to make it more efficient so we will be seeing those videos also😊

To avoid feeding mice we got a Grandpa’s Feeder. The chickens step on a platform that opens the feeder. Mice are too light. I cut my chicken feed budget in half (or more) . I use the deep litter method in my chicken coop, but I use shavings and wood chips instead of hay. Much easier to clean out (once a year, no odor). Some farm jobs are just plain hard work. Mucking out is one of them. But such a good feeling when it’s done!

Each spring we would have 4 feet of waste from the cattle. We would put it in the spreader & put it out on the fields. In the winter the build-up heats the floor & helps. If you check around & talk with some old-timers they will tell you once a year is all they did.

Y'alll should move those cylinder tangs on the bucket closer to the fulcrum of the lift arms.... It'll crowd the bucket in closer and give You a little more tip on the bucket... You'll really be able to stack it in then and not have to run the loader arms so high when travelling. Some removable manure tines will help Y'all too... We used 1" rebar 2' long, welded onto a couple of pieces of flat bar that gets bolted into the bucket when we need it... I had to bevel the end of the rebar into a chisel which helps it poke into the pile better. But it works great and isn't permanent.
