I've found linen bags to be so much more fashionable. I enjoy picking nice designs (as long as the bag is durable) and I even have multiple designs to match the task they perform, like unicorn-bags for the light stuff and a big linen bag for the artwork I need to bring home every week. Some bags are used for groceries, some less-fancy-ones are for dirty shoes or items from my garden. I only kept the sturdy ones, the big plastic bags that I already had and I re-use them untill they're finished.

I shared this PSA with my students today since the topic was climate change, environmental protection. This is a HUGE problem in Thailand where people are addicted to the convenience of using plastic utensils, plastic bags, containers etc. Yet instead of recycling, reducing or reusing, Thais BURN their plastic waste.

Steel is very energy intensive to produce. Probably similar impact as 300 single use water bottles. So I'd actually suggest a reusable plastic water bottle, and be sure to reuse it many times.

This is truly a wonderful idea, but where I'm living. It's a little rough to stop using plastic water bottles, I'm living out in the countryside and cannot afford a water pump, so the water that I shower with and the water that comes out of the faucet has amounts of sand in it. so I have to buy gallons of water just to drink out of it and for my animals, is there any ideas anyone has to help this tiny water problem out so I can stop buying plastic?
@sundogpress94602 жыл бұрын
If you are reusing large plastic bottles that is better than using small individual bottles. And if you are reusing the bottles that's OK.

@aogrtk60346 жыл бұрын
That kind of tank container is collected back by the manufacturer. After cleaning, they reuse it. Besides, it is the "strong" plastic that is made to last long, and has to pass safety standard for food and drinks. Sometimes, we just have not many other choices, but it is all about how you use it.

Wut
@Widdekuu912 жыл бұрын
@@joelmumaw3795 I said, plastic is not so bad if it is not wastefully produced and then chucked out again, after one use. Let me give you an example: 1. I have a plastic Christmastree. It is well-made, so the little plastic green 'needles' don't fall off. We have been using it for the past 30 years and it looks beautiful. Is this a bad thing? Should we get rid of it? No. Because it might be plastic, but because of this, we are not cutting down trees and then throwing them out again (burning them and creating smoke and smog in the process.) So that is góód plastic. A well-made suitcase will probably also be plastic. Not a cheap one, that breaks. But a good one, that you can use for a long time. And if you need another one (if you get children and a wife and such) you can maybe bring it to the Thriftshop and find a new one there. Now, an example of bad plastic. An example of bad plastic is when you put a seethrough sheet on top of products that don't need another layer of plastic. 4 layers of bubblewrap around a book (people don't keep that bubblewrap, they throw it out. Some don't even recycle it..) Plastic glasses to throw away after drinking from them. plastic toys on a market that break really easily or plastic forks, knifes, etc. Plastic wigs are not good for the environment..but what else do you use? Real hair is really expensive. Maybe partywigs should be brought to the thriftshop more often, to be re-used, rather than chucked away in the dumpster after wearing it. Sometimes, you nééd things made of plastic to be disposable. Such as gloves, from a doctor. Or condoms. Or lenses. That is for hygiene and safety, you can't change that plastic. BUT it needs to be recycled and cleaned. A waterbottle (that you buy 3-4 times a day) is not necessary, if you can just get a big (thick-plastic) waterbottle that will last you a long time. Lovely! No more piles of wasteful plastic bottles that are in the sea and in the environment. And instead of paying 2 dollars for every bottle, 4 times a day (that's 8 dollars a day) you just pay 16 dollars for a hypermodern and pretty bottle. That's worth 2 days of waterbottles together. And then you don't have to buy another waterbottle for the upcoming 10 years! Imagine how much money you'll be saving, not júst the planet. Just don't buy breakable, cheap, plastic stuff.

When single-use plastic bags are actually technically better for the environment than paper and some types of reusable bags...

@Jeremy Jrex Genuinely curious, how?
@justjeremy23196 жыл бұрын
These are some quotes from a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) comparing Plastic Bags and Paper Bags for use in the Philippines that I conducted: Chapter 1: Life Cycle Analysis of Paper Bags 1.1: Raw Material Procurement Approximately 50% of the fibre used for paper production comes from purposely harvested wood. The rest of the material comes from wood fibre from sawmills, recycled newspaper, some vegetable matter, and recycled cloth (madehow, n.d.). Coniferous trees, for example, fir and spruce are preferred for the making of paper as the cellulose fibres in the pulp of these species are longer, therefore making for stronger paper (madehow, n.d.). A few plants other than trees can be used for paper production. On places lacking in forests, bamboo can be used for paper pulp, along with straw and sugarcane. Some other materials used in paper production include bleaches and dyes, fillers such as chalk, clay, or titanium oxide, and sizings such as rosin, gum, and starch. Pulp and paper are made of wood fibres coming from natural forests and plantations.

Also, I'd just like to thank you for not blatantly not rejecting my opinion, but for rather asking for what my opinion is, which I genuinely appreciate. I am not saying that my opinion is totally correct, but this was simply the research I conducted, and I am just trying to educate others on my opinion.

@Jeremy Jrex Just read your other reply. That was just for plastic bags. What's the take on other plastic, particularly food containers and bottles?
@kkkanal6 жыл бұрын
Have you actually read the text you posted? And have you actually watched the video before you posted your first comment? First of all, the video is not about plastic bags or even plastic in general, the video is about reusable products. In your first comment you state that "plastic bags are actually technically better for the environment than paper and reusable bags", while your own text later on tells us about problems with plastic bags and concludes that reusable cloth bags or totes are the best solution... So what is exactly the point of your first comment?
