This is episode 2 of the Task-Based Flight Test of The Backcountry Bogey.
Let's give the Backcountry Bogey angle of attack capability with the GAP 26 pitot tube, GSU 25 ADAHRS, and G3X Touch system. Once calibrated, the system calculates the angle of attack using a differential coefficient of pressure to give the pilot analog indications. Once you have a stall speed (Vs0), in my case 43 knots, you fly 3 calibration maneuvers at 1.5x, 1.3x, and 1.1x stall speed to program the curve. You also fly a full power-off stall to essentially tell the system what coefficient of pressure equates to your wing's critical angle of attack.
The Backcountry Bogey is an amateur-(me) built experimental homebuilt RANS S-21 Outbound with many upgrades from Aerosport Products and IFR avionics from Garmin (G3X Touch). It also features a one-of-a-kind paint scheme designed by the legendary Mirco Pecorari of Aircraft Studio Design, of Modena, Italy.
Steve spent 21 years flying the mighty F-15C as a fighter pilot and test pilot. He now flies 737s for a legacy airline as well as a classic Beechcraft S-35 V-Tail Bonanza. His passion is sharing his love of aviation with the world.

I saw on your master configuration page, your Master Caution sound level was set at 50%, i set mine at 30%, then on the AOA sound page set that at 30% also. That must have been ear piercing loud, Lol! Nice demonstration!

Nicely done! Have you noticed when you’re trimmed hands off going from flaps 3 to flaps 4 the plane rolls to the left? Mine does as does another buddy of mine with a 21. There’s a little bit of cross control at flaps 4 so I only use flaps 3 now for landings considering flaps 4 just increases the drag without any additional lift. Plus, the flap lever is lower and doesn’t impede on my ergonomics to the throttle.

I haven't noticed this but I really haven't done much testing at other than full flap settings. I'll let ya know! I also want to do power-on slow flight and stalls to see if I can eek out another couple knots before stalling (after I do more stability tests and change the oil!).

@@CLEAREDDIRECT power on stalls are crazy steep. At least with mine I’m pushing 25 to 30° nose high. The whole air frame starts buffing and shaking and making noises like a bending saw-blade but it still climbs. I feel like the seatback is going to collapse. A bit unnerving lol

I would display your gauges on your video kind of in a 6 pack orientation. I had a hard time finding your air speed initially until I saw it way out of the way.

My comment on adjusting the AoA tone must of been deleted by KZfaq...I'll try again. Go into the G3X config menu and turn the alert volume back to 50% or higher. Then go into your Garmin com radio in config mode and look for alert volume (or something like that) and turn the volume down there...that should fix you up.

The Rans website lists Vso as 35kts with the Titan. Yours is 43kts. My dream is to build an S21 with skis for glacier landings here in Switzerland. The main factor is the speed range (Vso to Cruise) is great. The mountains are a little far from my home airport so a good top-end would be a huge benefit. 43kts would be a bit spicy on the landings though. Would appreciate if other builders have seen similar values.

Unfortunately, the Rans specs are a bit too optimistic. My 21 with the 915 stalls at 41kts. I’m sure if you did VG you could get it down a few knots slower.
@CLEAREDDIRECT

Yeah...what @Captndarty said. The website and is for marketing purposes. Now I haven't done any post-stall testing; i.e. power-on controllability and stall testing. I'm guessing I can get it a little lower after I've done more stability tests. Stay tuned!

My S20 is a couple of hundred lbs lighter, has VG’s and a bigger wing, it stalls at 32-33kts. Yes, the Rans figures are optimistic. Like the S21 there is very little difference in stall speed with flap application.

@@CLEAREDDIRECTWill definitely be watching. Actual, on skis, you generally add power as you start to round out since you are landing up hill (usually). The steeper the hill, the more power, so power on stalls would also be interesting. Anyway, thanks for all the work you put into your videos (and the Bogey looks iconic).
