Client Corrects Me! How To Stop Your Dog PULLING On The Leash. Dogs pulling on the leash out on a walk can mean that you don't want to take your dog for a walk and therefore means that they don't get exercised and if a dog is not tired from going on a walk or exercising you will start to see other behaviour problems so sorting a high energy dog so that they walk to heel is very important.

Purely positive trainers always talk about how corrections cause stress and damages the dog. What I see here is the exact opposite. A dog that was stressed and anxious now learning to relax. Without that training the owner and the dog would be living in a state of unnecessary daily stress.

That’s why I like this channel. So many other trainers say “never say no,” but sometimes that doesn’t work. I get not yelling and frightening dogs, but solely positive reinforcement doesn’t seem adequate.
@lion7880
@lion7880 3 ай бұрын
The negative reinforcement here is not the yelling or frightening, it's the pull on the slip collar. It's alright here but that depends on the dog, how much he lunges with what velocity, and whether the fragile neck is one of his particular weak points especially as he ages and the problems start coming anyways, the cartilages that holds the windpipe in shape collapses naturally sometimes.

As a swede, it is very refreshing seeing your training. Here, this type of training would be considered "cruel" and there are pretty much no trainers who dare to train like this or at least advertise it. So we've been training our 1.5 year old with 100% positive reinforcement, never saying no or correcting anything and only being dependent on treats. Let's just say it hasn't worked out for us and our dog is very anxious outside. I can really recognize in her the feeling you describe here about having the world on their shoulders outside due to lack of clarity and leadership. From now on I will try a more balanced approach with our dog, at least it makes 100% more sense to me than what other trainers have told us to do since day 1

And, how are the results?
@shoyrushoyru
@shoyrushoyru 2 жыл бұрын
your training was probably very unclear or unstructured for the dog in rules and intention and consistency and thats likely why it didnt work. not all positive reinforcements, or any training at all for that matter are created equal if theyre not being applied correctly for your situation. if your training isnt working, the dog probably doesnt understand why its getting treats and that may be due to being inconsistent in giving the dog an association with why it is being rewarded. the dog probably thinks "human throws food for me just cause" rather than "when i am relaxed i get food" or something similar. i dont want you to see your experience as a knock against positive reinforcement training, but a need to refine your technique and communication with the dog in a way that the dog understands what is being asked of it.

Very valuable when the owners allow themselves to be filmed. There is no shame in learning these things, after all most of us have the exact same issues, but it's so great to be able to see how you coach them to learn to apply these techniques properly! Absolutely amazing these videos, can't wait to start working with my dog!

Loved this video. Reminded me of how 30 years ago, as a beginner, a very smart horse trainer taught me how a horse experiences the bit and reins. I held the bit in my hands in front of me and the trainer held the reins behind me and I had me move according to the pressure the bit indicated…I was shocked at how clueless I was but I learned so much about sensitivity and pressure from that tactile lesson. Putting the lead on yourself and teaching the owner is like that, a tactile lesson we get to experience vicariously through her. I have often felt confused about why I can’t get that “pop” and instead it becomes pulling. You demonstrated perfectly why sometimes my timing is off. Thank you for this lesson!

I have a mini frenchie and I’ve tried all forms of leash - the slip lead is extremely difficult because she refuses to move and lays down protesting which causes me to have to drag her and she still refuses to move. Did your dog have any problem like this?
@leothelionxo

My dog was trained to walk at heel using 100% positive reinforcement methods. He is better trained than any of the dogs we come across. We do everything together, and I never have to worry about his obedience. I also have never choked him out to get there 😂 if you have to rely on choking your dog to get them to submission, it’s worth nothing.
@drmasroberts
@drmasroberts Жыл бұрын
@@leothelionxo I think you misunderstood the video. He never chokes the dog, but positive reinforcement is slower and fails with some dogs and some owners, especially if they already have learned bad habits. Your success with only positive reinforcement may well have been successful because of who you are, and not specifically the training method. Many owners are not natural leaders, so training the human is the difficulty. Reminding the dog who is in charge is not painful for the dog but can be hard on the owner. I watched my mother fail repeatedly with our German shepherd dog as she went through obedience training. She seemed unable to command the dog while my father, the obvious alpha, appeared to work the dog effortlessly. It acted as though her rewards whether praise or treats were its due. She was exasperated that the dog would only obey her if my dad quietly told the dog what she wanted, otherwise, not so much.

Great video Will. This is the training that has made all the difference. I adopted a 3.5 year old GSD last November, previously sent back to the shelter twice and the last time remained for 6 months. He was a mess and would loose his mind with leash reactivity. I knew it was not aggression, started getting worse, immediately found a local balanced trainer. Today I have the dog I always wished for and getting better everyday. A joy as long as you are willing to put in the work. My last GSD, poor Sasha, 5 years of solitary confinement at home because I blindly listened to that positive only BS. What a waste, it could have been corrected even after being attacked twice in a month by other reactive dogs.

You hunk of a man, you are the BEST I've watched. I have a Kelpie 10 years old and still full of Vegemite and beans. Before I came across you I trained him with repetion etc. They are a highly intelligent breed and catch on very quickly with the right training, direction, technique and guidance. You are that guy that is a master with all of it. Trust me I've watched hundreds of so-called trainers and no one comes close to you. My boy responds to your training techniques within minutes and I couldn't be more proud of him. I mean he was already trained fairly well when I got him but now that I've found you, I'm fortunate enough to iron out those minor creases that enable him to be more of the pooch that he's supposed to be. Kelpies as you know love to also be mentally stimulated, so the more I apply some of your training in the areas that need polishing up the more ready he is to go. We love you and thank you sooooooooooo much!!

The method I've used many times is just simple changing of directions, with some foot stomps to keep attention, light touch of the dog with my foot to their flank, praise, and calm firm but light correcting tugs. I also blend the amounts differently for different dogs. More eager to learn dogs need less correcting, but often more reminders to focus on me. Pulling in very engaged working breed can be improved 100% in one session, some breeds are not as quick but most will improve rapidly with good work.

Kelpie's that have 'the eye' which farmers look for in a working dog, can seem to turn their brain off when they see something move - good to see you dealing with that (in the same way as usual) but so good to see the dog that I will be dealing with in that situation.

Here in Australia we have lots of kelpies!! I have one myself.. they are so smart and beautiful… But when I talked to other owners we all struggling with the pulling on the leash!!😂😂 The thing that helped me the most is the harness with a front lead!!! Helped so much!!

I absolutely love your videos! I wish you’d do this same video for stubborn frenchies. I’ve tried everything and she refuses to walk with the slip lead. I’m dragging her to the point I’m worried I’m going to really hurt her even though I’m barely pulling, she’s a mini frenchie so she’s barely pushing 5lbs. I end she is an absolute nightmare if I use her harness and regular leash - she is small but strong as hell and almost dragging me down the hall. Her engagement is the biggest problem. She is so overwhelmed and excited about everything happening around her when she’s outside - even chasing the shadows from herself or any bug flying in the air. I’m at a loss. I have never had such a hard time training a dog before. My chihuahuas were a piece of cake compared to my mini frenchie. Any and all advice and help is appreciated 🙏 thank you so much!

So helpful! I've definitely been playing more tug of war than popping.
