The finals of the 2002 Derby City Classic One Pocket Division came down to Cliff Joyner and Jose Parica.
Joyner was a future One Pocket Hall of Fame member with multiple US Open One Pocket titles to his credit already.
Parica, known as “The Leader of the Invasion” based on him being one of the first Filipino players to come to the states and dominate the game, was also a future One Pocket Hall of Fame member and was also the defending champion of this event.
These two players had already played twice in this event, with each player getting a win. This was one race to three, alternating break, for the title.
Danny Diliberto and Billy Incardona called all of the action.

Parica won the DCC bank pool event the prior year 2001, the only Filipino to win banks until 2011 when Filipino players won 5 out of the next 10 years. He won the "Master of the Table" the year of this match 2002 although he didn't finish first in any of the events. He won the one pocket event the following year 2003. This was Cliff Joyner's only DCC title although he took 3rd place in the one pocket in 1999 and 2001, and 2nd place in 2007. In 2006 Cliff won the coveted "Louie Roberts Action and Entertainment Award" which provides free DCC tournament entry and hotel accommodation for life.

Outstanding info. Cliff was really playing awesome during this epoch. I miss these days (in every way possible). We lived in a better country amongst other things.

@@trumanhw Thanks. I know Cliff was considered the best one pocket player in the world for some period of time. Due to the format of the DCC tournament with the huge number of entries and short race, you could be the best player but still not win. All the more amazing that Efren was able to win it an incredible six times with several other top three finishes (including third place just last year 2023 at age 68).

I'm not a big fan of 1 pocket. But, I certainly respect the game and the gentlemen that play the game. Damn good match! 👍

Efren did not play at derby from 2000 to 2003?

Apparently not. There were some big tournaments in Asia around that time including the Tokyo Open in 2001in which he won $163,000 for first place, so there could have been a conflict. Also he starred in the movie "Pakners" which was released in 2003.
