Robert Sobukwe was one of the great thinkers and leaders of the struggle for democracy and freedom in South Africa. A humble man of academic bent, he ended up founding the Pan-Africanist Congress and was sentenced to solitary confinement on Robben Island. His story is both sad and inspiring, but without him, we would be living in a very different world.

The people who studied both of Sobukwe and Mandela would be very insulted by this comparison because the former and his struggle credentials are way too high than that of the latter. One of the Aparthied ministers once said that Sobukwe is a heavyweight compared to Mandela. Sobukwe had a clause on created for him. He was the most interviewed political prisoner at that time. He was more of intellectually advanced than Mandela, take a look at his speeches. At Wits he was a lecture but since he was a black man they said that an Assistant Teacher, they didn't Wana give him the title. He was offered to be a lecturer at Rhodes University, the only black man at that time but he turned it down. He was offered jobs by varsities in the US but Vorster refused. He was a threat for the aparthied government and he's still the threat to the current government. People like Robert Sobukwe come once in 100 years but he can never be compared to Mandela. When he was in prison he was poisoned and some point found glasses in his food. This was an truly amazing man.

Quite true what you are saying abut Sobukwe being a class above Mandela. Except the correction is that It was in the 1969 debates that the government finally relented. But that was not before the now notorious remark of Pelser, when asked why Sobukwe should not simply be placed on house arrest, like the government had done in relation to Chief Albert Luthuli. And the government’s reply being that, “Compared to Sobukwe, Luthuli is a lightweight.

Can you please elaborate on why he was not allowed to speak to any body in Roben Island. Is there any chance by the current government to allow at list his speeches to be aired on our Public broad casters

When the colonizers control the narrative the plot always has a twist, in this case they both deserve honor, but his story and fight is one that truly identifies with the struggle and the oppression of South Africa thats why he had to create the PAC, just like the black panther did in the states !

I worked on Robyn Island for about two years, and Robert was exciled , to the Island not imprisoned, and the little house was bigger than mine now in Australia, and overlook the beach, on the way to the administration buildings, not the Query. In the mornings one of the officers will visit him, taking in the daily paper and chat to him often for an hour.

This is a pure lie and I hate revisionists. What’s the difference between ‘exiled’ and imprisoned? Could he take a ferry off the island at will? Stop lying to people.
