My question is why do they keep blaming each other while some company gets to continue manufacturing ridiculously not to standard climbing equipment? If that clip was properly rated you should have been able to drop a car on it and then get a bull moose across that line without fear of it breaking. Safety standards for climbing equipment has very high margins.

I remember seeing this in the theater with my dad. The surround sound in that theater made this a hell of an experience. That opening scene was so intense and suspenseful. Even though this was basically Die Hard on a mountain, the setting really sets this apart from the other terrorist action films of the 1990s. This movie's main villian is one of the best badguys of the decade, up there with Cyrus The Virus from Con Air, Fallon from Judgment Night, Castor Troy from Face/Off and Die Hard's Hans Gruber, in my opinion. The action and the stunts are so well done. The cinematography is excellent. The movie as a whole still holds up beautifully. They just don't make them like this anymore. Stallone rules!

The film is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the costliest aerial stunt ever performed. Stuntman Simon Crane was paid $1 million to cross once between two planes at fifteen thousand feet, without the aid of any safety devices or trick photography. The insurance company refused to insure a stuntman for this, so Sylvester Stallone offered to reduce his own fee for the movie by the amount that the stunt cost to produce, in order that the film could be made. The stunt was filmed in the United States, as such a stunt is illegal in Europe, where most of the film was shot. Crane couldn't actually get inside the second plane, but good editing gives the appearance that he does

The opening shot of the film where Sylvester Stallone was climbing up the "tower" was for real. Sylvester Stallone did most of his own climbing scenes. Including the opening, which are incredible. Also, John Lithgow has played one of the most lovable and endearing characters ever, but also some of the best villains ever.

Cliffhanger was one of my favorites and one of the best action thrillers from 1993. Known as 'Die Hard on a mountain' and 1 of 2 smash hits for Sly in 1993 followed by Demolition Man. This had one of the first-ever super bowl trailers and it had the music of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana: O Fortuna with split-second images. So pumped to see it on Memorial Day weekend. The suspense and drama were on par with each other. But it was the characters and the environment that (for me) drove the action sequences. I was age 13 at the time this movie came out and i loved it. Also had the video game from Sony on Sega CD and the cutscenes were pieces of footage from the movie. You've seen many hits now from director Renny Harlin. Check out more like Deep Blue Sea (1999), Mindhunters (2004) and The Covenant (2006).

Most of the comments here make it sewm like this wasn't considered an absolute flop in the 90s when it came out, which it was considered back then. That is why this movie is considered by many the most underrated movie of the 90s, and didn't deserve the extreme flack it got back in the day for basically not being what people were expecting it to be from Sly

Cliffhanger stands as one of those great 'They'd never make it like that today' movies. With the exception of the occasional matte painting, all the mountain footage was shot at an actual mountain range. Today it would be shot in a green screen studio and we'd all be like, 'Meh.' Incidentally that stunt where someone crossed from one plane to another was done for real, with no safety harness. The stunt cost $1 million (which was a lot of money in 1993).

So much of the movie was shot at different real mountain locations, but you'd be surprised just how much was fake foreground, and/or fake painted backgrounds as well. Still a great movie, and none of that takes away from what a great action movie it is. It was like Die Hard on a mountain.
