How To Cut Gemstones - Iolite / Water Sapphire

Hello. I'm an Australian Gem cutter and I facet gems from all over the world. In this video you will see me facet "Iolite" / "Water Sapphire" from Tanzania. This is my first attempt at faceting this unusual gem. Unfortunately, towards the end, the girdle peeled off due to heat on removal. However, I learnt a lot about the complex nature of faceting this gem. Hopefully, other gem cutters can learn from such a educational video. Standby for future videos. So until next time, take care.

Aww shucks...... an Iolite bit Cliff too lol. After my disastrous Iolite faceting attempt a few weeks ago I learned that if your Iolite has any inclusions, make a lovely cabochon with nice rounded edges. I've been cabbing my small pile for about a decade. It holds together well in cabochon form. I still have a 5 gallon bucket full. It came from Connecticut. The Vikings used Iolites for navigation. It acts as a polarizing filter & allowed the sailors to find the sun behind cloud cover. And newer diesel trucks have this(in the form of cordierite) in the exhaust system to capture carbon. Keep them coming, Cliff ! And thanks for showing how much of a PITA faceting Iolite is lolol - you helped my ego to recover somewhat after my Iolite faceting fiasco ; ^ )
@VintageTimeGems
@VintageTimeGems 5 жыл бұрын
I have a feeling that Iolite is more suitable for cabbing. Just seems too brittle to have it even set. It has a great colour. If the hardness was greater it would be up there with the best gem material. I will need to give this another try someday. Cheers.

@@VintageTimeGems One thing you might try with an iolite is a combination stone. Facet the pavilion and cap the top, rounding the girdle into both the pavilion and crown. It would obviously produce a far from ideal gem, but it might end up sturdy enough to be mounted in a piece of jewelry.

That's interesting because I have chipped the girdle on an Iolite as I was setting it. No you don't want to know the new nicknames for that stone. I had never heard about the problem with their girdles before. Yours looked good up and until the chip.

@@VintageTimeGems The cleavage is so perfect that even setting the prongs further up on the crown than usual does not eliminate the chipping risk. I suspect that you could put the prongs on the table and some stones would still fracture. To me, iolite is a display stone, best displayed unmounted.

Machines have a mechanical stop that can be used for rough cutting and the angle scale is calibrated for when the quill is resting on the stop. Once you are close, it is as Cliff said, it is cut a little, look, cut a bit more, look - continue until satisfied.You do the final facet adjustment during polishing.

I think I'm more disappointed than you are about the outcome. The fracture is a pity especially as the gem has such a beautifully intense color. I have a 1.00ct Iolite that is bluish-gray. I'm guessing the table is not along the optimal axis for color. Viewing from the side shows a deeper blue.
