Gaspar Noé films are notoriously difficult to watch, and I've covered three of them. Climax (2018), while considered by many of his avid fans as inferior to his other works, are widely known as his most 'anxious' - or should it be 'insane' - film to date, and I do not disagree.
But what makes Climax such a nerve-racking experience?
Technically, the prize goes to the film's use of 'sounds', especially its diegetic music. But the real secret to Climax's panic-inducing atmosphere is in the film's use of 'anticipation'.
Let's take a look at Noé's rollercoaster ride of a film from 2018, and see what tricks he employs to keep you at the edge of your seat.

The technique of increasing the BPM and the presence of the bass drum in the mix as a party progresses is actually used by djs to bring the audience to, well, a climax. Partygoers who are using psychedelics might experience their peak at around the same time with this practice

Gaspar doesn’t seem to like when people enjoy his movies because he loves when audiences have controversial takes (as he once stated in an interview). But WOW, this was the best movie I’ve ever seen. The anxiety, the idea of being with all of these LSD induced, unstable people is probably one of the best concepts for a horror/psychological film. I absolutely adored it!

I think the part where they’re are dancing what almost seems like a set routine in the beginning, feels like they are in control, and that if they are free-styling, they are connected and moving with each other. When they are in the free-styling circle, they aren’t using a set dance, but are in control of their movements and what they want to do. The scenes on the dance floor after the drink gets spiked tho, feels like no one is in control of their own minds, and are acting on their impulses and irrational decisions.

there are two lives. life before climax, and life after seeing climax. I don't know if a film will ever stun me more than this one. Whenever someone needs a film rec and theyre open minded, this one never fails to impress people. The camera work, soundtrack, and performances are just insane with such a basic concept. It's even crazier that the actors really weren't working off of a script, but just a basic outline from Noé. Hes a fucked up guy, but this shit is amazing and one of my favorite movies to date.

I saw this film in theater and boy, what an experience. I loved Noé's previous work, so I knew what to expect and ended up loving it, naturally. The friend I watched it with said to me afterwards that "this is the best film I will never watch again in my entire life." Later he added that he will never watch another Noé film too. Anyway, I often read comments that this film portrays LSD in an exaggerated if not unrealistic way. But I don't think so. In fact, I believe that this is one of the best portrayals of LSD on film. A lot of the criticism hinges on the fact that everybody has a bad trip and goes absolutely nuts. Practically all users don't have this experience, but they often take it under controlled circumstances. In the film the characters are involuntarily dosed with a (to them) unknown substance, which is already a surefire way to experience a bad trip. Additionally, we don't know the dose each one received. If high enough, the events of the film are absolutely possible and accurate. But I also think that the film captures the body language, facial expressions, weird movements and just odd behaviour of someone who is tripping astonishingly well. I have never seen a film where the actors genuinely seemed like they were tripping. It's that accurate. How they move, how they speak, how their thoughts and actions flow and meander, how they react. It communicates a bad trip really well, but doesn't try to emulate it.

Except it’s impossible that it’s LSD... either it’s irony or hypocrisy or pure ignorance without any concrete experience of the molecule to tell the truth I don’t know any drug that can lead to such a level of human nonsense, clichés of everywhere then art perhaps, but in the form of grotesque clichés... The basic subject that is the excess of pleasure must be associated with Dopamine, not serotonin, psychedelics simply imitate serotonin and touch the dopamine D2 receptor that slows down precisely the behaviors of Dopamine D1 (pleasure-desire-reward) normally resulting from his liberation and which can make people greedy and shows low primary instincts, things common in our societies by abundance and profit... Except that LSD implies a dissolution of the ego not its inflation... even in front of the death of the ego the behaviors would be very different... this film has a particular attention, but it is grotesque to have taken this example just to make a shocking film, because other people can believe this nonsense for the same blow...

@@momo76morgan54 Bro what? If you're unknowingly dosed I can absolutely see something like this happening especially if the person has never done a psychedelic before, then you've got the terrified energies of everyone playing off each other and amplifying it instead of bringing the situation down. You can have a bad trip if you take it knowingly so having a bad trip unknowingly is a whole other ball game

I found the reactions of the characters completely disproportionate and unbearable. A bad acid trip doesn’t cause as much violence and stupidity. And it’s impossible to feel any empathy for the characters. Visually it’s great but the story and the stakes are poor. @angelbabyyy34202 You are in for an experience, is all I can say. _Enter the Void_ is a good place to go next, because it's genuinely unlike anything you will see anywhere else, but like the commenter said above, it's a tough sit. Nothing compared to _Irreversible,_ though. Many people don't make it through the opening act of that one. Fewer make it past the mid-point. And if you make it to the end, the more you think about it the worse it gets. If you can get through _I Stand Alone_ without feeling sick, you are a stronger person than I. One way or another though, like it or not, you watch a Gaspar Noé movie, you _will_ feel something.

I found Love unsufferable and I even watched it in 3D, which is how it was made to be watched. Some scenes are pretty interesting with the 3D effect but that's it. Everything else was lacking: story, cinematography, acting, everything. It just felt like something Gaspar Noé would do in his early 20s as a film student. That being said, I know people who really enjoyed Love, so maybe you could like it, who knows? If that was the only film of his you never watched, you might try it for the sake of completing his filmography.

I would definitely smoke or something before watching it, if that’s something you do. It makes it’s really cool, otherwise the end can be a bit of a headache. Vortex is an absolute must watch. It’s Noe at his most mature by far. I can’t recommend this movie enough, as long as you don’t mind feeling negative emotions and watch films as art rather than enjoyment. If you’ve ever had a family member with dementia, it’s going to cut deep. But a beautiful film regardless. I’ve always appreciated Gaspar’s work, but was never completely sold on his work. They were all “ok” in a sense. He does compelling work, but Climax to me is his magnum opus. One of my favorite movie; under appreciated. Also immensely frightening. It’s an accidental masterpiece, the way it was filmed had a natural flow to it likely due to the actors being professional dancers and the script being ad-libbed. Almost like watching a whole community crumble and crack all due to a quiet trickster who got off on watching chaos unfold [and is also German, how cheeky Mr Gaspar].. shows human apathy, anguish, fear and anger in its most extreme forms. Amazing film. I love Climax!

Thanks for covering this film. I found the use of color in this film very interesting. The music also matched perfectly with the scenes in the movie. Can you do a video on I stand alone? Its one of his older films

I loved Enter the Void, but Irreversible was too much for me. I love films that feel like an experience to watch, but I don't want to be emotionally exhausted to the point I feel sick, like I was with Irreversible. I used to really dig disturbing and crazy films, but now I have to be in a certain mood, and these days I rarely am. I will pass on Climax until the mood strikes. :P

I've watched this movie, and watching this video essay I feel the anxiety creeping back... This movie left an impact. I should also mention that I was high as a kite, and not at all prepared for what I was about to watch. The best horror movie I've ever seen. I'm never watching it again.

This is exactly why I stopped taking acid. When you get it off of someone, even when you just take a couple tabs, you truly never 100% know if you just took a couple tabs with a couple drops like they said, or are actually taking a couple tabs SOAKED intentionally or accidentally. If it is puddled, congratulations on your successful rebirth with an added acceptance letter to the hydra heads club, get ready to cut loose. Full disclosure, your cells signed on the dotted line as you start to see dots and several other shapes dancing to Mariah Carey in your peripheral vision when you realize there isn’t any music playing. In the most direct way possible, you’ve just disembarked. Welcome to the ride you simply cant prepare for. Be sure to pack art supplies and juice packs for one if you remember you can have memories of your past selves. This comes with no instructions, directions, maps, or seatbelts. Out of the blue those two little scraps of paper that whispered sweet nothings of a chill and laid back night while dissipating on the tongue have revealed they are actually equipped with the ability to psychological disembowel 12 rhesus monkeys before turning their third eye on you as an after dinner snack. At some point during your 12 hour sabbath you realize you have inherited a library full of questions written in seven languages, but you’ve already committed to the freeway and you can’t speak english. The skills asked of you by the 8 eyed tiger and a seven tailed sloth, piece together a rational thought, that thought was left at the last exit with your ranch Doritos. In you go, the tiger says. Into the melting pot. Sometimes heaven, often times hell, purgatory a few times extended past the credits, yet not a double feature, maybe featuring a story book loop with transitions, but lacking in the usual youtube ads about needing to trim your balls. Any way the ant climbs one thing is for certain and clear on this new planet. You’re not in charge of the ride anymore. It will let you off when it is done with you. Oh, and don’t bother trying to keep track of the time, unless you just like being further confused. It controls the time too. ✌️

The minute Psyche was introduced I knew she was going to play a crucial part in the plot due to her name being a reference to the Greek Goddess of the Soul, Psyche, who is described as being “above” carnal desires and yet falls in love with Eros anyway.

during the scene where the credits roll halfway through the movie - at first they're flashing on every downbeat, 1 & 3, but after the roll is interrupted by the two characters fighting it starts flashing on the offbeat, 2 & 4. Take that as you will, maybe was more about timing than a specific choice, but it's something a musician would notice immediately. The track also gets way more complex at that exact moment. It could just signify some sort of change happening, things are becoming 'off' as in the offbeat. It could be speaking to how our brains interpret music on LSD - listening to music on acid definitely allows you to notice some finer details, some deemed familiar neural pathways that your brain typically ignores, 'between the lines'. This is right when the acid is kicking in after all. It's very likely I'm stretching here, but any remotely abstract art allows for that sort of individualistic interpretation, and whether that was thought about by Gasper or not I do really like that it happens regardless. Even on a purely aesthetic level that scene is maybe my favorite in the movie.

The title might have been true if not for his most recent film, Vortex. The final 20 minutes of that legitimately gave me a panic attack - my toes were uncontrollably curling up, I was crying inconsolably, I struggled to catch my breath - and i basically wanted to kill myself for a week. Just the bleakest outlook on life and legacy and nothing i could really refute (Climax is the only other film of his I've seen but based on his reputation he's known for an unbelievable level of depravity in his films which can feel unrealistic and a little juvenile - and I think this holds true of Climax at least - but Vortex was all too real) so it was incredibly sobering. It's a masterful film but one i struggle to recommend.
