Climbing Mt. Silliman via Death Drop Ridge: Best Hike in Sequoia National Park

Mt. Silliman may very well be the best hike in Sequoia National Park - and there's a good chance you've never heard of it. That's because most of the route is completely off trail and requires class 2 and class 3 scrambling to the summit of Silliman, complete with an epic climb and scramble across what we've now named "Death Drop Ridge". But let us just say this hike will be TOTALLY worth it, as you'll get some of the best views in Sequoia NP - from Alta Peak and the Watchtower to the Sierra Nevada ranges and all the lakes in between.

I can't get over how gorgeous this is, and y'all do such a great job capturing it. Props to Adam for carrying the camera while walking across the knife edge part. I could walk it it, but only if it had my full attention- filming while doing it would be a hard nope for me. Serious respect.

Heck yeah!!! That is amazing for us to hear, and honestly you couldn't do better than Mt. Silliman for one of your first off-trail climbs. It's so epically beautiful, but not super sketchy or dangerous. And once you do it you'll be totally addicted to the High Sierra, if you're not already!

Haha! Well, there was about a four mile lead up to the granite slabs, that, while beautiful, didn't make the cut because the other stuff was just so sublime. But yes... from the granite on up: dicey! 😂

I am officially jealous, watching summits of peaks of Colorado and California. I climbed about 50 peaks in the lower mainland area of British Columbia, Canada; when I could still do that. I had my favorites and watching this one, would be a place I would have gone, once upon a time.

You two are amazing to watch. I’ve been to so many of the places, not the peaks, that you are literally running through. What takes me five hours at 58 literally takes you 50 or less minutes. Kudos to you. I’ll enjoy my pace/ability for now, but in my next life, I’ll be there. In the mean time, I’ll enjoy vicariously.

We just did this this on 7/24, though we took a slightly less steep route from the lake to the summit. Saw your note in the summit register! :) All those streams on the slabs were dry now, but those slabs just went forever! What an epic hike and thank you so much for sharing your adventures. You keep inspiring me as I train for Shasta!

Yes! So happy that you did Silliman! And there’s nothing wrong with taking the class 2 route to the summit if you don’t like vertiginous rock scrambles. Still get the same incredible views from the top! Good for you for not being intimidated by the off trail nature of the hike. Very glad you saw this one! Of all the hikes we've done, this is the one we'd recommend most highly. Not too dangerous, and as you say just incredibly beautiful. You need a good gps map since it's off trail, but if you have that you will LOVE this hike!

Oh, wow! This entire video was truly epic! Ok, let me catch my breath first. If just trail running isn’t difficult enough for you, you decide to kick it up a notch and go totally mountain goat/polar bear on Mt. Silliman. Every time you guys jumped over a stream or fissure I held my breath, when Elise jumped into Silliman lake I felt 1000 needles pricking me and I’m in warm San Diego! The views were out of this world and the beautiful blue skies looked amazing. Thank you for your bravery, strength and perseverance.

Haha, thanks so much! To be truthful, it wasn't that chancy because the rocks were all granite, so the holds were extremely secure. Obviously, had we let go, it wouldn't have been good... but we weren't planning on letting go! Water was freezing but SO worth that massage after! 😃 -E

I just learned that Elise did the music for this. I was completely convinced that I was listening to a Dead Can Dance that I wasn't familiar with. This is excellent. You have the ethereal vocals combined with the pulsing "Gonna Die Now" tempo in the background. Very nice.

Right!?! We've trekked all over the world, but there's no question that this hike was in the top 5 most visually stunning things we've ever done. Just top to bottom, heart-stoppingly beautiful. Couldn't recommend this whole hike more highly.

Really cool Idea of Adam to leave that note at the peak of silliman.Boy oh boy some areas on those rocks going up was pretty dicey,I held my breath momentarily when it looked like you would slip Elise,but you are so darn strong you just snapped right back and tore it up.Adam went up like a breeze,as I always said and will continue to say I love you both and you two are like beautiful angels together.I just finished my prayer vigil this evening,and I prayed extra special for Elise and Adam to be connected together in happiness for ever,and now after viewing this adventure to the top of mount silliman I know my LORD heard and blessed my prayer.I just lost my best best friend ever this week,I thank Elise and Adam for turning my hours of crying into hours of rejoicing for such beautiful human beings as you are,and the beautiful adventures I travel when you two take me there,thank you both so very very much!!!!😊❤️

Haha Jerry you have got to believe! It was pretty dicey in a few places but Adam lives for that kind of climb! 🤣 and you gotta take that plunge- even though it was freezing I felt so refreshed the whole rest of the way down!

Hey you guys!! I just did Half Dome yesterday morning. I Camped at Little Yosemite and woke up super early to catch the sunrise, I was the only one there and it was magical. Honestly your guys video made pushed me to the point of actually doing it!!! now to the next adventure!

@@LiveHardxLoveHard yeah the cables were up, they had just put them up the day before, but I had already bought my harness and carabiners because I thought I was going to be doing them with the cables down. But I felt a little safer with them up. It was so cool I want to do it again !!

Wow thank you so much for your encouragement!! We always say the same thing - it will be so nice one day when we're old to have this chronicle of these crazy adventures. And can't wait to share some of the crazy climbs we've got coming for this summer - doing a massive PNW road trip and trying to hit as many awesome mountains as we can!

We've been doing some pretty wild climbs lately, but Silliman is still one of our all time favorites! Silliman meadow coupled with the sparkling granite slabs, epically steep ridgeline ascent and spectacular 360 summit views of the Sierras? I mean.... COME ON!

To be truthful there were a number of times on really exposed parts of the climb where I handed the poles to Elise and had her chuck them up to me when I got to a safer hold 🤣 but Elise says she likes the idea of handicapping me... she suggested the idea of adding weight to the poles as well 😂😜
