Clint Eastwood, Dirty Harry Callahan, whatever you want to call him... Walt Kowalski. He talked to Peter Travers for Peter's show on ABC News Now, Popcorn, about his role in the self-directed movie, "Gran Torino". It's a crime that this wasn't nominated for an Oscar for anything!!

As someone of comparable age, who has experienced most things portrayed in the film, I had quite a few loud belly laughs. Clint Eastwood plays the disgruntled old man superbly, putting up with a changing world, and then finally coming to terms with it all in a positive way to help the people he once despised. A great yarn, and much enjoyed. One of his best films.

Clint Eastwood in this role showed the emotional roller coaster that our generation ( I am a senior citizen) goes through. The loneliness, disrespects, culture shock and the fact that all of a sudden whatever you have done in your life didn’t change anything ( true or not ) and ,.,.,.,.,.. Great film and very underrated. PS today a 25 years old “ kid “ was trying to give me some advise about life . He didn’t realize I wrote the book ( matter of speech) on what he was trying to read to me . We are not perfect and I am not a know it all , but with age comes wisdom and experience and I better stay away from too much coffee !

Reporter missed whole point of movie. Walt is not 'the Good', or Harry Callahan, or even Philo Beddoe. Walt represents a 'rust-belter', forgotten by mainstream society and even his own family (who wants to warehouse him in a retirement center). Hmong, so different but ultimately so similar to him in ways neither realize. Remotely more similar to movie "Outlaw Josie Wales", where Josie lost his family to Union Redlegs, while Walt lost his wife to natural death, and his kids to suburban lifestyle. Hmong, like Chief Dan George and the pilgrims, become his surrogate family, in both cases a changed world he cannot understand, acting in an exterior crust. This is one of Eastwood's better movies

Walt was an example of a racist character who was a good person at heart. He has no time for worthless people, and even in his racism later it's just how he is. He's endearing to the Hmong, when he starts calling Thao his actual name, or even calling Su Dragon lady, she's not offended cause she understands he's a very jaded man from an entirely different point in history to her. It makes his final act all the more heroic.
@ownpetard8379
@ownpetard8379 3 жыл бұрын
@Gavin R No, it does mean that. (You meant to say, "thinks their race is inferior") But there are degrees of racism like most other beliefs. Su charms him enough that he can tolerate Thao, and then comes to see he has more in common with the Hmong than with his own family.
@practicaliching2311

Nonsense. Walt Kawalski is the anti racist in the movie. The racists are the people that ethnically cleansed Kowalski's family out of the neighborhood that the Kowalski's of this world built, their church, businesses, and other institutions and scattered the family to the wind. This story is being repeated every day across the western world. There is nothing worse than this deworsity crap. At some point white people will have to stand up and fight back against the ethnic cleansing and racism that is destroying their families, economies, and culture.
@RobwLPOC
@RobwLPOC 3 жыл бұрын
Most of the racism isn't racist just because he's using slurs. It is actually a sign of friendship and ballbusting. For example George Jefferson and Archie Bunker did not hate each other it was equivalent of verbal jousting

@@RobwLPOC ...or Walt and his dago friend the barber.
@RobwLPOC
@RobwLPOC 2 жыл бұрын
@@zombywoof1015 one of the funniest parts to me was at the end during Walt's funeral when the priest walked up to the podium and said "Walt Kowalski once told me I knew nothing about life and death, because I was a over-educated 27 year old virgin, who held the head of superstitious old ladies and promised them eternity" you can see his barber in the audience, snicker into his hand, trying not to laugh out loud just thinking to himself "yup, that's Walt alright". When you think about it how many Barbers would show up to a customer's funeral unless they really liked that customer? He respected and considered Walt a friend obviously. Another great example would be when Walt called the white kid a pussy and said "what is with all this bro shit anyhow? What are you trying to be super spade or something? These guys don't want to be your "bro" and I don't blame 'em! Now your ofay Patty ass down the road!" Then told the black guys to "take care now" right before he left. Pretty much showing that he had more respect for the black kids who had actually showed balls than he did the pussy white kid who had none.

Of course Eastwood's characters and films have similarities and continuities. That's because he's an artist who keeps developing and is in critical dialogue with his tradition. "Million Dollar Baby" (in which "Tough Ain't Enough"), "Unforgiven" and "Torino" especially take apart all the assumptions and clichés and put them in new contexts where we can think about them freshly. Hell, the end of "Torino" completely inverts his whole career, where the hero who kills all the bad guys at the end now turns violence against itself in favor of life. That's why the last image shows him in a Christ-on-the-cross posture but upside-down. What a great contrast to the majority of Hollywood icons who just keep milking the same old story...
