They need to revoke degrees If they're acquired fraudulently

C'mon, Claudine Gay didn't plagiarize. She simply used duplicative language initially written by other people without sourcing it. Harvard told me so.

I’ve been an adjunct professor for 13 years. My school is not woke, but I’ve been very embarrassed by academia. I almost quit 7 years but decided against it because I enjoy my time with my students. The corruption and lowering of standards is bad for the Social Sciences. Many of the journals are garbage and the neo Marxists are moving to take over the scientific journals, medical schools, etc. I was interested in possibly going full time but was told that my race (white) would be a deal breaker if I was tied with the other candidates.

US Jumpmaster School (Advanced Airborne School) was more challenging than any course I took along the way to earning my B.S. from a major University. A combination of rote memorization, oral examinations under time pressure, field testing, performance testing, etc., is required to become a US Army Jumpmaster. The course has a first time pass rate of under 30% (70+% of soldiers fail the course on their first attempt). Missing a single major flaw, or 2 minor flaws during the JMPI (Jumpmaster Personnel Inspection) results in immediate failure from the course. The JMPI involves inspecting 1 fully rigged out soldier with rucksack, weapon, parachute etc., and 2 soldiers with parachute and emergency parachutes in under 5 minutes total. Even the nomenclature is graded. If you correctly identify a flaw in how equipment is worn, or a defect in the equipment, but you refer to, for example, an "attaching strap" as an "attachment strap", that counts as a minor flaw. Much of the teaching methodology and curricula of our institutions of higher learning have become so far removed from real world practical applications they are becoming irrelevant for career success, other than to remove pre-screening barriers.

@@MrVvulf Thx for your service. Yes. You are talking about Meritocracy and results. BTW, I wanted to go into ROTC but I had a permanent injury of my left arm. I can still do pushups but the left arm does not straighten. I am a boomer and pretty hardened by life. I could have been a tradesman and have designed and built my own house. I’ve worked in aerospace for 40 years and have worked with a lot of former military. College is a joke in terms of work preparation. I still believe in it for basic knowledge for medicine and engineering and such. The rest, we don’t need. Half of the companies surveyed have said that they will start hiring people without college degrees. I’ve been saying this for over a decade. In fact, I wouldn’t hire someone from the Ivy’s. I’ve been impressed with every former military person that I’ve worked with. My company has 15,000+ former military working here. I lead hard and challenging projects. I build teams full of doers not talkers.

I’m a small business owner and former large corp manager. I’ve hired more people than most ever will in a lifetime. I stopped looking at college degrees and where they came from 15 years ago. The college scam has been painfully clear to anyone who cares to examine the modern academic environment.

Good for you!! The value is just not there anymore w a University degree. STEM is not even immune anymore. When I was in school 30 yrs ago these "social construct" theories were pedaled but were not taken seriously by any math, science engineering and business majors. That has changed. Even Business and STEM has been corrupted by this which is sad because I doubt many professors are even on board w this stuff. If they don't speak up, well be throwing the baby out w the bathwater.

In 1969 I was going to the BU cafeteria on a very cold, windy day. There was an Episcopal theologocal ceremonial procession, with red gowned faculty members walking in pairs. As the line stopped I dropped my textbooks and bent to pick them up. Just then, an earnest young woman reporter for the student newspaper started to interview a professor. He was short, once fair haired but then balding, clearly very anxious with questions about him being the faculty advisor of Martin Luther King. She was enthusiastically asking him about how good a writer and speaker MLK was. He turned his head to avoid looking at the reporter, so actually spoke in my direction. He said that Martin was a gifted orator, but wasn't a good typist, so he typed Martin's papers. I saw his face and knew that what he could not say was that he mainly wrote the papers. He lied and misled the reporter. He saw me listening and turned red, as only very light complexioned people do when they blush. The line of faculty moved and he looked ahead silently. I have never written about this encounter, but the hypocrisy of academics--in the School of Theology, no less--who silently advocate plagiarism should be exposed and opposed.

She should lose her job and be required to re-defend her dissertation at a minimum. To keep paying her is such a failure on Harvard’s part. All in the name of DEI. How about the serious academics who are really solid hardworking people whom are deserving their tenure who are now tarred and feathered by this scandal.

How can a Professor who is known to have plagarized enforce the honor code with their students? Why would a student adhere to the honor code and not plagarize when their professors have with almost no consequence?

Turnitin is problematic. As a professor, I have issues with false positives. The XXXX-Studies is the worst areas. They’ve eliminated block quotes, which were verbatim copying of entire paragraphs, which was OK at the time. You would properly attribute it. Direct quotes with proper attribution is another problem. You end up making the student re-write sentences to not trigger Turnitin and then properly attribute it. All to get a better score on Turnitin. Just recently, I had a student get caught dropping in 3 pages for his dissertation. He was in the bottom third of all of my students. It was the first time on my 13 years.

I am an enthusiastic amateur historian. It is not difficult to read up texts - write your own views and opinions and counter arguments to cited references. That is you own 'original contribution'. So many of these so called 'dissertations' are in fact simply a regurgitation by cut and paste of the preceding body of work and so provides no new insights or work of value. They are 'reviews' of the ;literature of the subject at best.

It was already bad back then, but now it's a cruel joke. I used to think that the hard sciences were immune until I heard brand new doctors reciting a twisted oath with a whole lot of social justice blather that would have left Hippocrates slapping himself silly. All kinds of accusations of modern medicine always abusing people of color and women and ignoring folk remedies, etc., etc. Not that bad things never occurred in the past perpetrated by doctors, but to hear this oath you would have thought that they were all required to declare that they were ashamed of modern medicine.

I think it’s assumed. At least to me , this has always been a big part of the outrage. Academia (at least her area within academia) is not a trade like being a pilot. Your job is to teach and cultivate the next generation who will do the same.

Every act of fraud is deplorable, but going after academic fraud specifically does raise the suspicion of being politically motivated, seeing as the academic world is currently dominated by the progressive left. Likewise, pursuing exclusively wig theft (to the detriment of other kinds of theft) could be seen as the persecution of blacks and jews.
