My grandmas vet recommended pet owners to not clip their birds wings for obvious reasons because she explained that there have been cases where the feathers started growing back and they became ingrown under the skin and started getting infected causing a cyst to form under the birds skin it happened to my grandmothers cockatoo she has a cyst on the top of her wing after they clipped her wings when she was of age where it was acceptable to do so and not it’s permanent and according to vets there is no way physically possible to remove it because it rests on the skin where a blood vessel is located underneath the flesh that makes up the birds wing. Im not rocking anybody’s boat here I’m just saying it’s risky to do that to the bird in general because cysts can form under their skin and if you try to remove it or have a vet remove it it will ultimately kill your bird in the process because a birds wings are a sensitive area full of tiny little blood vessels and bones and professional or not they shouldn’t be dinked with because in general the wings are the birds only source of flight or support for it’s tiny little body they need those wings to fly in case they are ambushed by a predator in This case it would be the family dog or cat birds scare very easily and I can vouch on that with tonight’s event my grandmother just had to admit her 17 year old cockatiel to the vet because her dog shook and the jingling of its dog tags scares the bird so bad that it ended up having to get both its wings bandaged and put into a temporary carrier one of which is custom made to handle to bird’s situation and protect it from harm as it’s wings began to heal the situation there was scary the vet told my grandmother if the bird gets hurt again it will bleed to death and die and that’s strictly if it manages to damage the blood feathers in it’s wings in any way you have to realize in not talking about a baby cockatiel I’m talking about one that’s been alive for 17 years and thankfully it was just a blood feather issue and the poor baby didn’t have a heart attack or whatever because according to my grandmother this all escalated when they were asleep but the dog was awake and scared the crap outta them and before she knew it one thing lead to another and before she knew it it was off to the vets and into the recovery carrier he went

I have an adult hen, experienced flyer, never clipped to my knowledge, tame with all, but she was startled the other day by I do not know what and flew into the door frame and scraped her head by her eye, a minor scrape no bleeding and no swelling and she is fine. I never before believed in clipping but I sure do now. I don't want her to die from a startle hitting the wall, window or yes even the ceiling head on. Occasionally even the most non flighty tiel can be startled by who knows what and take off in panic. She is so strong as she fledged and has been a daily flyer for several years I am going to clip her only three on each wing to slow her down. To start. It really is true that even the most steady tiel, flighted, can get startled and take off strong right into wall or anything. My thoughts are now I want her alive and if this means she must put more effort into flight and fly less distance with less force I don't care as I want her alive and without a broken skull or neck. She is my family and it's my job to protect her from harm.

My cockatiel came with clipped wings. He was 6 months old. He did fine figuring out how to safely get to the floor & walk around. I’m a firm believer in clipping their wings. I have sadly lost two cockatiels who were not clipped as they flew out the door which was opened only for a split second. Never found either one. It was heartbreaking. So when I got this third bird I was determined he was not going to be able to fly out the door. I’m convinced it’s a safer thing to do because it does not hurt the bird & he loves to ride on my shoulder most of the time. Thank you for this very informative video. Oh the bird that was screaming was hungry not scared.

In other words ... you were too irresponsible to ensure that your birds can't get out of the door or escape the house, so in response you're now actively choosing to cripple any new birds due to your own negligence. Birds need to fly to stay healthy and happy. Clipping wings is literally animal abuse. Don't get a bird if you can't accept that they need to fly or you lack the awareness to make sure they can't escape. I've had several unclipped birds for 25+ years and NOT ONCE has one escaped or even come close.

My sun conures are flighted. They fly around my house a bit but mostly sit on my shoulder. They are Velcro birds. When I got my female she had been clipped 3 times before the age of 7 months. She couldn’t fly and it took a long time for her feathers to grow back. My birds have not flown into anything.

I'm just like you, all my birds were flighted.Then it happened to me. Last month my velcro green cheek of 6 yrs must've got spooked and broke his neck, never got spooked like that had happened before then. It' was at night time while I was sleeping. That's why I'm learning about clipped wings now for my other birds. Accidents happen when you least expect it. I miss him so much...I always was proud because they could enjoy the beauty of flight after this event I'm reconsidering. Maybe it's just not suited for an indoor pet. Wish you the best - I don't post much but I wanted to share this.

If the feather was fully grown when it was clipped it will stay like that until it falls out during a molt. After that a new feather will grow in its place.

Hi dear, yes dear is my answer to your question. Their wings will automatically drop off after one year and the new feathers will be grown by then and if you wish to cut them off again then carefully cut it as you have previously cut by not harming the bird. Thank you for this informative video! We are seriously loooking into getting our first cockatiel. Can you help us with this? I think we're going to go with clipping the feathers because we have too many hazards for it to fly into. My one concern- we live in a high ranch, house has 2 floors with a railing on the top floor. Im envisioning an adorable cockatiel hopping around on the top floor, getting close to the railing and falling down...with clipped wings, will it still be able to fly safely down? The diatance is about 9 feet. Thats the one concern i have about clipping, really hope it wont be a problem! Thank you!
@Bird.Squawk
@Bird.Squawk 2 жыл бұрын
It's been my experience that once they learn that they can't fly that well that they stop trying. That's not to say, all are like this. The method I use with clipping only the outer five feathers eliminates the bird from getting lift. Therefore, this keeps them from flying upwards.
@qbblackpath
@qbblackpath 2 жыл бұрын
i saw many clipped birds that can land safely from high distances.. i think clipping only helps in not flying upwards but their wings are still effective during landing or outdoors.. even a clipped bird can get left by the wind outdoors and fly upwards, i don't think even a clipped bird would get hurt from falling from any distance

My grandma has two cockatiels her oldest a male just turned 17 years old today he has out lived her entire flock she moved into my neighborhood 15 years ago She has never clipped any of her birds wings she said that birds have something called a blood feather on there and if you clip it accidentally you can cause great damage to the bird even death if the bleeding is not stopped the bird can actually bleed to death and die. She also told me her vet recently discovered that the leg bands they put on birds is extremely dangerous as well the vet recommends anyone who has one on their pet birds have them removed immediately because there are stories that have been confirmed that the bracelet cuts off circulation on the birds foot as the bird matures and eventually the foot becomes necrotic and dies and the vet has no choice but to remove it because the foot cannot be saved. Bird owners beware if your feathered friend has one of these remove it immediately don’t wait till it’s too late or your pet bird will permanently lose a leg to stand on and quite possibly affect its quality of life as well mobility wise

So it doesn’t fly into windows and break their necks. So it doesn’t fly out the door and starve to death because because it’s a domesticated animal that depends on humans to feed them. Many reasons. It’s like cutting your dogs nails
@josiahdizon2334
@josiahdizon2334 2 жыл бұрын
@@yoinks9907 actually there is a higher chance of them flying into windows and getting injured, because they will still try to fly even though their wings are clipped, it also makes them unable to balance sometimes. 70% of clipped birds get injured because they cant control/balance themselves while trying to fly. And no they are not like cutting dog’s nails, but instead like cutting off their feet because its the bird’s way of moving around other than walking
