These days, iron sights are mostly associated with "classic" type of shooting styles, but one would be mistaken to think that the servicemember of yester-year didn't know how to fight with them.
We delve into how one could use these "classic" military arms in a short-range situation.

I think that’s what Josh was trying to say but without saying it. Natural point of aim has been deprecated in formal training- “use your damn sights, that’s what they’re there for!” IMO it’s useful to find out what your natural point of aim is with any firearm you have. I don’t want to sound like I’m making excuses but if push comes to shove in a very high stress situation it could save your life.

I learned the "look over the sights like a shotgun", using the tips of the front sight protector wings and the wings on the rear carrying handle, out to at least 25m - that's how I shot my annual pro-mask firings, vice the "cock the rifle over 45°" (which I never could get to line up without breaking seal on the old M17). A similar technique works with most shoulder fired small arms - that's how I like to run an SMG at 25 meters and under - just "shoot it like a shotgun". It ain't fast, but I can generally achieve "Minute of Ribcage" easily. With my RDS rifles, they're all mounted at absolute co-witness, and I use a fixed BUIS front with a flip down rear. And that's because I've found that even with the RDS turned off, I can use the tube itself as a ginormous ghost ring, with the front sight. That gives instantaneous transition to BUIS at the ranges where you have zero time to adjust stuff. When you get 2 seconds, you can flip up the rear BUIS and be no worse off than a pre-RDS AR.

I saw a sight that Paul Howe (one of the Delta Team Leaders for Mogadishu ‘93) came up with. It’s an A2 rear sight with a notch cut into the top of the 300 meter ring. He did that to eliminate the need to flip up and down between 0-200 and 300 meter apertures in areas with varying distances.

Iron sights are not that bad for close range at all if you do two things: 1. Keep both eyes open, yeah way better depth perception obviously, You get way better situational awareness, The binocular effect of having the iron sight in front of one eye but not the other effectively makes the iron sight translucent (keep both eyes open and put one hand really close in front of your eye and see what I mean) 2. Ignore what Boomer firearms instructors tell you is a hard and fast rule, and start training with Target focus on your eyes, You can still be very accurate without keeping your focus on the front sight, at least with more practice Focusing on your front sight is going to kill your situational awareness and reaction time, It's the default way we use a Red Dot sight, but you can get used to effectively doing it with irons

As I've gotten older I've gained more of an appreciation for 20th century firearms and among those things is an appreciation for good iron sights. In an era where we slap big LPVOs and as many accessories as we possibly can on our ARs, we've totally taken for granted just how slick and handy those early carry handle AR carbines actually are. Also I wear glasses and red dots and especially holographic sights are totally useless when I look through them without glasses but irons are totally fine, so good irons is something I have to actually consider for defensive guns in case I'm without my glasses for some reason lol

2 years ago, I participated in a CQB shoot or my range. It was a 2 guns friendly competition. Pistol and AR. I won irons class with a score that put me 10th overall. Other classes were red dot (x1) and optics (x anything you want). Aa long as you know how to use them, you’ll be fine in a CQB match. A brutality match with long range stages will be a disadvantage. But CQB your ok. AK sights, not sure, but AR aperture sights are great. But that might be because that is what I trained.

The way Henry describes the m16a2 sight sounds almost like a gutter snipe sight from the ACP pistol.

Very similiar. You'd be able to do basically the same thing on A1 sights. Hmmm..... Wonder where ASP got that idea.

@@tenchraven if I remember correctly the man who developed the ASP created the gutter snipe sights to better help with point shooting. I would say watch forgotten weapons episode on the ASP from a few years ago to learn more.

i love the AK iron sights. not sure why they get so much hate. The sight picture you describe is what i like to call "Caveman EOTech"

GWOT Acog gang here. The fiber optic protective wings on acog and front sights made me a ninja. Compared to my buddies looking through the 4x glass.

I did practice Archery when i was younger , and i used the dot on modern recurve bows but also used the tipp off the arrow as a aiming point for the older longbows its basicly the same technique on fire arms

You mean hk knew what they were doing? Portugal actually spent a lot of time teaching troops how to shoot cqb with FMP G3s. Lots of commandos became really good at cqb jungle warfare with g3s

During CQB training while I was an 11B we always trained to look over the top of the optic and use the FSP as our reference point as we had ACOGs on our M4s. When youre no more than 10 yards away from your opponent as long as the FSP was somewhere on the targets torso, you were guaranteed to hit. One thing we would run into was holding at the bottom of the sternum would generally result in a head/neck shot in practice, and at that range thats a guaranteed way to drop anyone standing in front of you instantly.

My ARs have those older school front sight posts, even though I also put red dots on them. I made my kids learn how to shoot with irons, and then I let them have co-witnessed red dots. The irons are always there, and it’s just a bonus if the red dot is working or not

I've always thought about putting one of those white, "white hole punch protector sticker"s on the glass of my red dot, so in case I lose battery or electronics or glass shatters or or or, I have an "etched reticle" for a back up. 🤓

If worrying about dead battery and/or broken dots, just get a micro PRISM scope with a PERMANENT Reticle on the glass!

This really helped me understand why I hate AR-15 sights and how to use them better. I have always found HK & AK sights easier & quicker to lineup. Also I use a magpul flip up front sight co-witnessed with my dot. I don't deploy the rear sight for CQB drills, I just use the tube of my dot as the rear sight and as long as I have the front post centered in it I know I'm good.

Interesting. I love A2 and HK sights and don't much care for AK sights. I also don't like Magpul front sights because they feel too narrow for me. I like FAB's front sight, but hate their rear, so I run the FAB front and Magpul rear on 2 of my ARs (the other 3 are running Troy sights, but they're metal and the first 2 are lightweight builds so they get the polymer BUIS). All that to say, our different experiences just go to prove you have to find what works for you through practice. What works for some may not work for others, so get your range time in and find what works for you.
