This rule is one of the most complicated for me, but today I understood the concept better, once again, Josh great job what you do for all of us.

Terrific explanation, using reference points or the player's height is great advice.

So you either have to Get your shoulders or head past the defender,pass the ball, or shoot for the count to be terminated. Thanks that makes a lot more sense

Great explanation, Is this a rule in the NBA? Because I see it all the time and it is not called.
@OfficialsInstitute3 жыл бұрын
Good question. The NBA does have many rules that are different, in addition to, or substracted from, the NFHS and NCAA rules and are so due to the skill level of the players that make up that league. Since this site is designed for high school basketball under the NFHS rules, I simply do not have the knowledge or understanding of those rules sets. Thanks for watching.

No this rule is not in the professional game
@winonafrog Жыл бұрын
@@ChuckPhenomenal false, Lebron just got called for it & thats why im here
@markbyrd7710 Жыл бұрын
@@winonafrog but that's not the same rule. "Back to the basket" is what Lebron was called for. "Closely guarded" isn't an nba rule.

Can you hold the ball for 4 seconds( fifth would be the whistle) dribble for 4 and hold again for 4? In the end you can control the ball for 12 sec?
@OfficialsInstitute3 жыл бұрын
If a player can control the ball, holding or dribbling, all the way up to 5 seconds, meaning 4.99, so 4.99+4.99+4.99 equals 14.97 seconds. So it's important to make sure we allow the full 5 seconds before blowing the whistle.

@@OfficialsInstitute Also important your count is on the money. Not too fast; not too slow!
@axelsjourney Жыл бұрын
3:47 You said a "new count began" and I counted 3.5 seconds and the ref blew his whistle early even after ballhandler got his head and shoulders past defender... Was this a bad call or...???

This play should not have been a closely guarded violation.
@DM-lw6qx2 жыл бұрын
Fast count?
@OfficialsInstitute2 жыл бұрын
Maybe we can put together a video on counting.
@bluefm7370 Жыл бұрын
This violation often goes unnoticed by a great number of officials. In your second example the official in my view not only called the violation inappropriately, but sped up the count. This is another issue in sports in general where officials put themselves in the game needlessly. Is this a subject you could broach in your videos?
