What was not mentioned here about the Cuban missile crisis is that the US were not aware about the amount of nuclear weapons and missiles already fully ready on Cuba. At the point of discovery, the US military thought only a handfull of missiles of various kinds were ready, while in reality several dozen nuclear missiles were ready to launch at a moment's notice. If Kennedy would have given in to his military advisors for an invasion, the Soviets for sure would have launched them against the US. If I recall right, this was also a reason why some politicians in the USSR were confused about the US leadership's assertive behavior. The USSR assumed the US already knew the full extent of the nuclear capabilities on Cuba, while in reality the US was only aware of a fraction of what was already stationed and ready on Cuba.

My father was born in 1948. Luckily, I can still hear stories of cold war America through his view as he's still living. He vividly remembers the Cuban Missile Crisis as if it were last week. I can't even IMAGINE the wide spread panic. He had to come to terms with the "Red Scare" quite a few times. This world is crude.

During the the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Soviet missile sites weren't actually discovered by recon flights. The Soviets were experts at camouflaging, and by this time, they knew the capabilities of the U-2 recon planes very well. They had ample information from the one they shot down over their own territory, and the interrogation of the pilot, Francis Gary Powers. In fact, the presence and locations of nuclear missiles were revealed by a traitor. To protect this source, they conducted recon flights, but they knew exactly where to look and what to look for. The spy was later betrayed by a double agent and arrested by Soviet authorities.
