I was wondering how a spread bar is fixed. Now, I know. Thank you for a helpful video.

Great tool. Thank you for sharing! (I would be interested in seeing a close up as it was out of shot)

Got my wife to order one of these and it should come in soon. Thanks for the video. I got a Jonsered bar and a Husqvarna bar that needs a good going over with this thing and then I will use a conditioner to finish it off.

I tried one of these tools. junk all soft steel and course threads on the tightening arm that stripped out almost instantly. I'll stick with a hammer and a vise.

I used one of these on a old McCulloch welded tip bar. That bar is a tough one. I spent about 45 minutes closing mine up. Took forever. It did close it up nicely though. It was pretty bad.

@@LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair I'll have to try it on a newer bar sometime. I have a feeling that 60 year old McCulloch bar is a little tougher than the recycled steel bars we get today.

Can the rails also be opened if the bar got pinched in hingewood?

Q1 How do you know your side wall is getting to thin and bar need to be replaced? Q2 What is your reccomendation if we don't have your nice tool? Wood block and gentle hammering will do it? Thank you for your great video! Alex from Québec, Canada
@LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair5 жыл бұрын
It's not so much the rail getting thin as it splaying outwards, effectively widening the groove. You want .03-.04 inches of clearance, but if the chain can rock side to side more than 30' or so, the groove is getting pretty wide. Without a roller, I'd recommend putting and crummy old chain in the groove to help prevent overclosing and then a hammer and straight & strong piece of steel at least 8" long. Tap slowly and consistently to avoid to much variation. It's a bit of work, but a bar groove within tolerances will make your saw cut much better and reduce wear.

I asked about this on the "Steve's Small Engine Saloon" channel when he was live. He said it was less often spread rails and more often inner wear of the rails. I checked his claim by using a caliper while comparing to a new bar. The outer sides of the rails were still pretty parallel , but inner rails were too wide. Steve recommended either a tool like on this video or to take strong vice grips carefully set and squeeze a bit at a time down the rail. while checking with the chain. I'd like a tool like what's on this video but I'm not sure what brand/model to get. Do any of you have any recommendations?

I really need to watch this video again. I'm thinking of buying one of these because I think this is my problem with my bar. My oil pump was clogged up and I didn't realize it or was just in a hurry to finish but my saw has been getting half way through a log and will just stop cutting. I've dressed the bar sharpened the chain cleaned the say and it still does it. I have a pretty old but expensive bar I believe it's a Windsor or something either way it's lasted a long time and served me well but I don't wanna part with it just yet. Does this tool really address this problem. I'm pretty sure the cause is the gap is to wide and chain is going at an angle because I can't thing of anything else that would cause this issue.

Assuming that your bar is straight, there's only a few things that can cause what you are describing. One would be slayed rails that need to be closed, but you also need to grind them flat again after closing them up. Another cause would be a combination of the inconsistent tooth length and depth gauges that need filed down to match the tooth height. I really like the Husky gauges that cover the tooth and let the depth gauge poke up through...makes it really easy to know how much to file.

@@LeonsChainsawPartsAndRepair yeah the rakers are filed to the same langth its defiantly the rails I'm positive of that. I just wasn't sure you could fix them. I only recently found out they had a tool for that bug haven't heard much about it wasn't sure if it would actually work on not
