How do you know if your irons are the correct length? If you take a few minutes to watch this video we show you the simple measurement that will allow you to know if your irons are too long or too short.
What is The Golf Paradigm (Pair-a-dime)?
The Golf Paradigm is a theory that encompasses a Whole-In-One approach to improvement. It begins with the overall paradigm; i.e. the game of golf. Followed by two parts that are always to remain in balance; i.e. the golf yin/yang - ‘improving’ and ‘enjoyment’. Helping to maintain that balance are the 5 elements of the game; the swing, club fitting, health/fitness, mental, and integration. Knowing which area to focus on and how the other areas supplement that helps to form the golfers ‘recipe’ for improvement. As the golfer improves their recipe, or what is focused on, changes and this is what allows them to reach levels of play they never thought possible. It’s not magical, but it’s close.
The Golf Underground is for those that want to know the How, What, and Why? It's like 'Alice in Wonderland' where Alice was asked if she wanted the red pill or the blue pill. But…be careful which one you choose because the rabbit hole of information may go deeper than you're willing to go.

@ROGERSWKS
@ROGERSWKS 3 жыл бұрын
@@razerfish Correct. If you've measured yourself at 36"-36.25" you would look at a 39" #6i as a STARTING point to fitting you to the correct length. However, I would also recommend you double-check this carefully as building clubs that long do come with certain issues e.g. total weight, swing weight and on centre hit consistency at that length. As a sanity check you could look at Wrist-to-Floor charts available online and compare the two measurements to check if the WtF charts also have you at or close to 39".

@Thegolfparadigm
@Thegolfparadigm 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to watch and for your question (which is a good one). Not really a direct correlation with the driver the same as there is with the irons. In part because irons are for accuracy and the driver is to get distance. However, we do recommend driver lengths in the 44.25-44.75” range and do not believe what the manufacturers are doing is best for golfers; ie making driver upwards of 45.5”-46”. At these lengths many golfers swing speeds actually slow down. The extra length can yield longer drives as a whole but longer into the woods or water doesn’t help you or your game. Hope this helps.

What's your comment though on manufacturers going to longer lengths than the norm in irons? I looked at irons I hit well the epic forged and I just looked and their std is longer. It by accident matches with you (me) as I'm 33 inches measured as u instruct. But in fitting at a local retailer they found I made better contact with half inch longer than their std which is already longer in first place. Their stock 6 iron is 38.25 . Do I ignore recommended half inch longer (2 degrees flat as well) or stick with their stock? Thx

@Thegolfparadigm 4 жыл бұрын
Very good question. There’s two parts to every fitting; the science - physics, physiology, neurology, biomechanics, etc and how these things relate to one another to help a golfer reach their potential. There’s also reality isn’t hat ‘science’ by definition is merely a form of measurement and mankind hasn’t figured out how to measure everything, at least not yet. To answer your question I would stay with what you measure too bc in the long run your ability to hit all shots will be better enhanced than one you hit well on a day your timing happened to be spot on. There are other factors involved in why the longer one you hit may have been better; tighter quality control of head weight, to shaft flex and shaft profile to what you need instead of what a shaft label says. If you want to make sure staying with what you measure to instead of going to the one you hit better on a given day I would take both lengths out to the course and hit them. I would say over time you will hit the one you measure to better than the longer one. To add, the one you measure to will not negatively effect the rest of your swings; ie hybrid and wood swings while the longer one will eventually disrupt them. Hope this helps.

A lot of variables in play on high face strikes and difficult to answer. But, it would tend to be too long of a club instead of too short. Too short will more often than not lead to thin strikes.

@ROGERSWKS
@ROGERSWKS 3 жыл бұрын
Hi @Jim White. I play Wishon EQ1-NX one-length clubs. The measurement of length is one of, if not the most important measurement of a golf club to properly fit the golfer, probably even more crucial with one-length clubs. With one-length clubs typically being built to the length of a #7-iron e.g. Cobra one-length (for the EQ1-NX you can actually choose between either #7i or #8i lengths) and you would use the chart to find your optimal #6-iron length then subtract 0.5" to find your #7i length. For example if your Knuckle-to-Floor was 28" which equates to a 37" #6i, you would best fit a 36.5" #7i length. --- Can clubs be shortened? Yes, but only by someone who knows what they're doing to ensure the swingweight, lie angle and shaft flex of the shortened club are also adjusted accordingly. --- The measurement is based on a 28" knuckle measurement on the ruler equating to a 37" #6i For every 1" above 28" (measured on the ruler) you will add +1/4" to the length of a 37" #6i For every 1" below 28" (measured on the ruler) you will subtract -1/4" from the length of a 37" #6i (a) Measurement on Ruler (b) +/- #6i (@37") (c) Adjusted #6i Length (a) (b) (c) 36" +2" 39" 35" +1.75" 38.75" 34" +1.5" 38.5" 33" +1.25" 38.25" 32" +1" 38" 31" +0.75" 37.75" 30" +0.5" 37.5" 29" +0.25" 37.25" 28" 0" 37" 27" -0.25" 36.75" 26" -0.5" 36.5" 25" -0.75" 36.25" 24" -1" 36" 23" -1.25" 35.75" 22" -1.5" 35.5" 21" -1.75" 35.25" 20" -2" 35" --- Also, please note this is NOT a conversion from manufacturers "standard" lengths. This chart is based on a 37" #6i length being optimal for the bio-mechanics of someone with a 28" Knuckle-to-Floor measurement and represents the 0.25" club length change for optimal bio-mechanics between each 1.00" change of Knuckle-to-Floor measurement. I hope that helps.

Your 6I length would be 36.5”-36.75”. Your measurement falls directly in between our exact measurement and why we always have a test hitting session after the static measurement. Length is from the bottom of the club to the butt end when cut. The grip cap will add 1/4” when installed.

Hi. This is a very interesting video - thanks for posting it. I have been thinking that my irons "feel" too short but having checked on a Callaway and Ping fitting chart they both told me that i am "standard" fit based on height and a measure of length from the floor to the wrist or knuck. Your video suggests that my 6 iron should be 38 1/8th (as i am measuring 32.5 on your scale). Are the club manufacturers getting this wrong do you think? It does feel to me that my irons should be longer, but how can the manufacturers be so far out? I'd be interested in your views on that.

@Thegolfparadigm
@Thegolfparadigm 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question and watching the video. One length clubs have to be built with very close attention to detail or else they won't work correctly. The head weight has to be extremely close, if not identical, the shafts the same frequency. The lie angles will be more upright on the lower lofted clubs; 4I, 5I, etc. to make sure enough trajectory can be attained. If you have a very good club person that can guarantee all these things it may help. If you don't, it has high probability of being a catastrophe.

Better than needing an extra 1/2” bc you can grip down further. It may throw your timing for a short time, about 12-24 swings as the hands and club hit finish position at the top sooner and may require a reboot of your timing but your ball striking will likely improve. Keep us posted to how it works.

@Craig Scott For Irons and (in my opinion Hybrids too) you can use the following to work out the recommended #6i length and build your clubs in 1/2" increments down to the #9i. From #9i to PW, AW/GW and SW you can either choose 1/4" increments or make them the same length which is what I do. Here is the chart for Irons/Hybrids --- The measurement is based on a 28" knuckle measurement on the ruler equating to a 37" #6i For every 1" above 28" (measured on the ruler) you will add +1/4" to the length of a 37" #6i For every 1" below 28" (measured on the ruler) you will subtract -1/4" from the length of a 37" #6i (a) Measurement on Ruler (b) +/- #6i (@37") (c) Adjusted #6i Length (a) (b) (c) 36" +2" 39" 35" +1.75" 38.75" 34" +1.5" 38.5" 33" +1.25" 38.25" 32" +1" 38" 31" +0.75" 37.75" 30" +0.5" 37.5" 29" +0.25" 37.25" 28" 0" 37" 27" -0.25" 36.75" 26" -0.5" 36.5" 25" -0.75" 36.25" 24" -1" 36" 23" -1.25" 35.75" 22" -1.5" 35.5" 21" -1.75" 35.25" 20" -2" 35" --- For Driver and Fairway Woods there is a slightly different approach. I know @The Golf Paradigm as well as myself and others do not recommend the 45.5"-46" Driver lengths offered by the major brands. Unlike the chart above there is no optimal length with the driver the same as there is with the irons. I nearly always end up fitting most clients into driver lengths between 44.25"-44.75”. They are most consistent and still just as long (and not in the water, trees, Out of Bounds) at these lengths. I then fit 2" less than the driver length for the #3w and 1" increments down through #5w and #7w. --- I hope that helps. --- D E

Many reasons: the head weights differ, the club dynamics differ due to CG placement, heel to toe length, etc. So does the lie angles. If all the irons are the same length the player will struggle with low irons in particular the wedges. Even at the highest levels. If you did have all the same lengths the heads better be hand selected and within a few grams of one another and the shafts the same frequency. Otherwise it will make a bad situation even worse.

All good questions. Without knowing the body measurements of someone it would be fruitless to estimate what their club-lengths should be. Pros do not lengthen their irons because they are more concerned with accuracy than they are improving distance. They hit the ball long enough that they often do not need more distance with their irons. If someone hit an 8I 214 yds I would check a number of things; was it downwind, how firm were the greens and were they playing it short to bounce and roll to the target, was it downhill, etc. Also, what was the loft of the '8I'? Just because its stamped with an '8' does not mean its the same as yours.

Sam Smith we appreciate you taking the time to watch the video. If the knuckle to floor measurement is 28” than the 6I would be 37” in length. That’s the baseline for information purposes. For every inch the knuckle varies from 28” the length of the club would change by 1/4”. So, if the knuckle to floor measurement was 29” the 6I would be 37 1/4”. If it was 27” the 6I would be 36 3/4”. Absolutely it can and will cause the ‘S’ word. Everyone has a rate at which they unwind in the swing and that timing is set internally. Making the same rate of unwind with a shorter club will cause you to top the ball, because the clubs not long enough (every groove is 1/8” so 4 grooves is 1/2”) Shorter will also cause you to come up and out of the shot as you try to adjust to the new length. We recommend either adding the length to your new clubs, to the same as your older clubs.

Thank you for the inquiry and watching the video. With a 28" knuckle to floor of the lead hand your 6I should be 37". Each club after that would be 1/2" difference shorter or longer depending on which direction you went. For example, your 7I would be 36 1/2", 8I 36" and so on. your 5I would be 37 1/2" and your 4I 38". I've aced every math course in college, including calculus. Sorry guy, his explanation was horrible. Pretty comparable to a very low rated Math Professor. If he just added the explanation that a normal 6 iron length is 37" at a 28" knuckle length, and then went into the +/- 1/4" adjustments from there, with every +/- 1" knuckle length from 28 inches, then it would make so much more sense, but he didn't add that part in. @Thegolfparadigm
@Thegolfparadigm 5 ай бұрын
Use a 48” long ruler. You can get one at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Put the town of the club up against something sturdy like a baseboard and make sure the grooves are parallel to the ground. Place the ruler on the underside of the club and measure. Keeping the scoring lines parallel to the ground is a square face void of rocking due to sole camber. We don’t recommend using the common peg board because different sole cambers will give differing lengths.

@@Thegolfparadigm great thanks. One more question. I've seen where fitters will try and shy people away from measurements like this or wrist to floor. In your experience, is this pretty spot on or do you run into situations where someone will be different?
@Thegolfparadigm
@Thegolfparadigm 5 жыл бұрын
It's very spot on but in all our fittings we do a test hitting session once we do the static measurement. There are other variables involved and hitting balls with clubs within 1/4"-1/2" of the static measurement recommendation is an important part and its recommended you do the same. Fitters sometimes denounce static measurements but that's usually because they don't understand the measurement or used one without any science behind it. They usually get different specs from the fitting theory they were taught and have to cast one aside and that's usually the static measurement.

Would clubs that are too long also cause laid off positions? And if you already are shallow can shorter clubs help steepen the plane?
@Thegolfparadigm
@Thegolfparadigm 5 жыл бұрын
Covenant Official, thank you for taking the time to present your question. We trust our answer will help you improve. When a club is too long there are a myriad of problems and laid off is not exempt from that list. The additional length can and will add weight to the club and for those that may not have the hand, wrist, and forearm strength, laying it off can become a problem. Shorter clubs will steepen the plane due to the lever being shorter. If you go too short, you run the risk of your sequencing and timing being thrown off. Shorter clubs will have a tendency to hit their finish position in the backswing prior to the other parts of the body reaching theirs. Not all parts hit finish position simultaneous but the timing of each of these parts and their working in a consistent sequential order is based in large part on the feedback the club is giving the golfer. This can and will cause a slew of issues during the swing, especially at impact. Hope this answers your questions.

Pete - how are the measurements and fitting affected by how far down the shaft one grips the club? Certainly chocking up shortens the club.
@Thegolfparadigm
@Thegolfparadigm 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. The measurements discussed in the video are not affected by how far down the shaft someone holds the club unless the club was too long, to begin with. The body has multiple parts that rotate; the hips and the shoulders, and this rotation has to coordinate with the movement of the arms. Each of these moves different distances and at different rates of speed yet they are all coordinated to each other. If you were to make a swing without a club they would be coordinated perfectly because you haven't yet introduced the fourth variable, which is the club. If the club is the correct length, the movement of the all these parts will stay coordinated. If it is too long/short, it will be disrupted to differing degrees. If a club is too short, the toe of the club, trailing forefinger/thumb connection will arrive at their finish position in the backswing well in advance of the other parts of the body. As the brain senses the backswing is completed it will send the message to start the transition and downswing, and the timing and sequencing of the swing are disrupted. If the club is too long, the shoulders and hips have reached their completed rotation but the hands and clubhead have not making the body's rotation 'wait' for the others and throwing off the timing and sequencing. When the club is the correct length it enhances and positively reinforces the body's natural timing and sequencing. If the club is shortened from that point, often in an effort to hit a shorter shot, the coordination is adjusted for without requiring conscious thought; i.e. the movement of the hips, shoulders, arms, and club are all reduced yet maintain their ratios to the other and the swing remains coordinated. To test this to the extreme, grip down on your club to the end of the grip and attempt to make full swings. I'm fairly certain your arms and club will move faster, because of the shorter length, but they will also be outpacing the rest of your body. There are differences at impact as well, when the club is too long/short, but that's a topic for another time. Hopefully this answered your question.

Is this system based on a standard length for a steel shafted 6 iron at 37 inches? I assume if someone were 28 inches at the middle knuckle, which is a 2 inch difference from 28, then 1/4 inch for each inch difference = 37 in. - .5 in. = 36.5 in. finished 6 iron length, as per your statement. Correct? Would I also be correct in assuming this system is based on steel shafts? I ask this because the modern standard length of a steel shafted 6 iron is 37.5 inches, isn't it? Also, if my assumption that this system is based on steel shafts, what modifications, if any, would have to made for graphite iron shafts, which are typically longer to account for the lighter static weight of each shaft? Can you clarify? Thanks!
@Thegolfparadigm
@Thegolfparadigm 4 жыл бұрын
No need to change the length due to graphite. The coordination and timing of the body to club relationship doesn’t change because of shaft material. Your timing is what it is. If you increase the length you run a high risk of disrupting that. Add in another variable of added speed due to lighter weight and your mishits increase. You begin to lose control in direction, length and trajectory. Not sure we understand the first part of your question due to mentioning 28” twice. Could you clarify?

But he says the best way is to basically try different length 7 irons, or 6 irons whatever one you prefer, and hit them at a fitting and see which one you hit the best or closest to the center of the face. Makes sense as well but since I don’t like being fitted and can’t figure out the trigonometry of the procedure in this video, I’ll stick with wrist to floor and adjust.

Have someone use a long ruler or tape measurer and measure from the middle knuckle of your middle finger to the ground. If it’s 28” your 6I (or whatever club is 30-32 degrees of loft) will be 37”. For ever inch your longer/shorter than the 28” knuckle to floor, you will add/subtract 1/4” from the length. If your 29” knuckle to floor your 6I will be 37.25”. Why is this based off of a 37 inch 6 iron when a standard length 6 iron is 37.5. I measured at 27. So I would play a 36.75 inch 6 iron. Which is 0.75 inch less than standard. So what I guess I’m trying to say based on my measurements being 27 inches on the ruler I would be 0.25 inch shorter than standard or 0.25 inch shorter than a 37 inch 6 iron. Which is already 0.50 inch shorter than standard 6 iron length. Which would also put me at 0.75 inch shorter than a standard 6 iron length. Right.

@ROGERSWKS 3 жыл бұрын
@Jake McKeown. This chart is based on an older "standard" length when a steel shafted #6-iron was 37" (and a graphite shafted #6i was 37.5"). I've put "standard" in inverted commas as there is little agreement in the industry as to what is/was a "standard" length and the manufacturers change what they determine as "standard" as lengths have crept up over the years. This chart -- www.derwi.tk/400/wedge-shaft-length-chart.html -- shows the length this conversion was originally taken from. To answer your question: If your Knuckle-to-Floor is 27" that would put your #6-iron at 36.75" quite rightly as you said. Now if that is 0.25" below "standard" or 0.75" below "standard" depends on what the manufacturer of the golf club in question deems to be their "standard" and also if the shaft is steel or graphite. Please also note that this chart is based on a 37" #6i length being optimal for the bio-mechanics of someone with a 28" Knuckle-to-Floor measurement and not a conversion chart of length from what the club manufacturers deem "standard".

Jack Miller there are those that measure in between full inch measurements; such as 27 1/4. At this measurement you will be 36 1/2-37. This is where you would need to hit balls with clubs of each length to determine which is best.

Don’t you also agree that a golfer’s posture also is a factor in determining length? If a golfer is bent over such as Keagan Bradley it makes sense that his clubs needn’t be as long as some like Fred couples who stands almost straight up.
@Thegolfparadigm
@Thegolfparadigm Жыл бұрын
No, It would effect lie more than length. Length deals with the rotational ratios of the swing - hip, shoulder, hands and club head being in sync. Anything shorter or longer than where it needs to be will cause issue with that.

This is just impossible for me to figure out how the measurement works. Where does this number 28 and what is the formula that makes everything change from the actual knuckle to floor measurement. I keep reading other people's comments who are confused (as am I , after watching video several times and rereading your comments.) and it just doesn"t connect with me. There must be an exact formula (as in all math) to easily convert. i.e. knuckle length , ( and that is where the confusion begins). I sorta get that this number 28 has importance(why I don't know). But what the heck is the formula that you are using from the number 28?? and why do you even need this formula. Why not just have a chart that shows what the length from knuckle to ground would be ( the same as they do when they measure from crease in wrist area?) Heck, even my writing is getting confused because I am so confused over this entire thing. Any easy formula that can be used. EX: x + ? _ ? or whatever)

One of the most confusing explanation videos I have ever watched - if you could have explained it like you have in one of your replies you could have saved 91,000 odd people an awful lot of confusion and head scratching - I add it here - " if your knuckle to floor is 28” the 6I length will be 37”. For every inch the knuckle length changes the club length changes by 1/4”. So if your K to F is lower than 28, you need a shorter club, and if more than 28 you want a longer one. I am now off to see if my 6 iron is indeed 37" long!!
@robbrown6495
@robbrown6495 5 жыл бұрын
This length theory is fine if you have the perfect swing but surely if a short golfer has learned to play with longer clubs, the swing, stance etc has taken into account the club length? Very few of us amateur golfers have that professional stance. At 6ft 2 inches tall I learned to play with a standard set of clubs. I was persuaded to get fitted and ended up having my irons extended by half an inch. For 6 months I had no idea where my ball was going to go but I eventually acclimatised and managed to get my handicap back down to where it was before I lengthened the clubs. To a certain extent the requirement for precise clubfitting is a myth spread by the industry to generate revenue.
@Thegolfparadigm
@Thegolfparadigm 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and taking the time to offer your opinion. However, your idea in having the perfect swing in order to have the proper length is incorrect. Can a golfer play decently with a club too short or too long, to some extent but there are two negative effects to their game and body. One, they will never be able to play to their potential because their swing will be in a constant state of compensation and you can never learn to compensate consistently. Two, compensate enough and your body will begin to break down; muscles, soft tissue or bones and injury is almost an absolute. Club fitting doesn’t have as much to do with stance as it does rotational ratios of the body. Your height has little to do with the length of your clubs and the ‘standard’ clubs you learned to play with may have been the right length. Extending them may have thrown you off. There are many out there that identify as fitters but they are far from it. The point of this video is to give golfers like yourself a very close approximate (within 1/2-1/4 inch) of where the length should be so you don’t change clubs that may be correct. To dismiss proper club fitting as unnecessary or a myth is an ill educated statement at best.

This was too much like a lecture on quantum physics. The ruler measurements are good to use perhaps as an initial reference marker, but far more important is the individual swing-style of each player and what feels most comfortable. I am 6'1" tall and ended up going with custom shafts that are 1 inch longer than standard, which would be considered too long for someone of my height strictly going by the book. But in my case, I happen to have a very upright swing, I wear spiked golf shoes, and I also don't use the conventional inter-locking hand grip most golfers use. All of the above factors required my shafts to be longer in order for me to hit balls comfortably. At the present time, I can't see myself changing my club lengths unless I start losing a bit of height later on in life.
@Thegolfparadigm
@Thegolfparadigm 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment but swing style doesn’t have anything to do with club length. What ‘standard’ are your clubs 1 inch longer than? There isn’t a standard length anymore and each manufacturer goes off their own. If you’re hitting your current clubs well then by all means stay with them. There will be outliers, as with anything, and you may fall into that category.
