Clutch failure

My Stemme S12 had a clutch failure on climb out. Lots of vibration and burnt rubber smell at the 6:24 mark in this video. Fortunately I'm within 15 miles or so of KUSE, my home base. Hopefully you don't notice that on takeoff I only use 100% power, failing to select 115%. I notice at the end of the runway when I usually reduce power to 100%. The landing is pretty good if I do say so myself.

To all, yes the clutch was replaced by a new design some months later. Stemme actually covered the cost, including overhauling the Rotax engine due to the overspeed. ROTEK Canada replaced the crankshaft, con rods, pistons, rocker arms just in case of damage. Then they inspected all of those parts and none of them had any damage! That Rotax engine is bulletproof.

Calm and collected reaction to an engine failure, that's the advantage of a glider I guess. Great video, thanks for sharing.

As of today the engine is out and undergoing an inspection. I'm not sure when it will be repaired. I'll post my flight from Columbia SC to home when it is repaired and the weather is good.

And as of April 1 N50RL is about ready to pick up. The Rotech Canada folks overhauled the engine, replacing the crankshaft, con-rods, push rods, and valve lifters. Upon inspection of all of those parts there was NO DAMAGE to any of them! One hell of a great engine. I only wish it had electronic RPM limits built in.

Thanks Thomas! The S12 is actually quite easy to land. No new clutch yet but a team is traveling around the USA installing them. I actually have a S12G that will be delivered In November, trading serial number 012 for 045 and it already has the new clutch

Curious you reached for the airbrake and not the throttle.

The blue lever is the spoilers. My brain said Pull back the throttle but my right hand was on the stick. It took two jerks before my brain said Switch hand asshole, and then I finally switched hands and pulled the throttle back. Good news was that Rotax engine took the abuse. I also learned to fly with my left hand if the engine is running.

Hello Rick, great video! question, why did you not set your stemme to soaring attitude after gliding distance to the airport was available? Is it better to rely on the faulty engine diminishing the glide ratio? thank you!

Juan, you are correct, after getting the throttle pulled back I should have turned my speed into altitude while I was making the turn back home. When the engine kept running I advanced the throttle slowly to see if the clutch would engage again. It did so I set it to 3,600 which is roughly zero sink. I also failed to slow to 60 kts for a better glide.
