First time uploading in 4k and using a pop filter with my new mic. Enjoy.
Hey everyone! Let’s talk about clutch pedal freeplay. This seems to be a confusing topic for many people so I figured a video explanation would clear things up.
Clutch pedal freeplay is the area of clutch pedal travel where there is no resistance and thus no hydraulic pressure disenging the friction disc. You can see how much freeplay your clutch has by using your pinky finger to press down on the clutch pedal until there is significant resistance. A small amount of freeplay is absolutely normal and even desirable by some as I’ll explain later...
On the Honda S2000 clutch pedal free play is caused by two things: slop in the clutch master cylinder rod adjustment and play that is actually built into the clutch master cylinder. If you want to maximize clutch disengagement for the smoothest possible shifting you can remove clutch pedal freeplay by adjusting the clutch master cylinder rod. Today I’ll show you how to get rid of the clutch pedal freeplay caused by slop in the clutch master cylinder rod. You’ll want to leave the freeplay in the clutch master cylinder alone.
1. The first thing you want to do is take a 12mm wrench and loosen the lock nut holding the clutch master cylinder rod in place. When the clutch master cylinder rod is unadjusted it should be completely effortless to rotate the rod clockwise and counter clockwise. Before proceeding make sure there is no resistance in either direction.
2. Then use your fingers to gently rotate the clutch master cylinder rod clockwise with your fingers until you feel the a very slight resistance. At this point the slop in the clutch master cylinder rod is completely removed. You can double check that you’ve found this sweet spot by rotating the rod counter clockwise and then rotating it clockwise again.
3. Once you’re sure you’ve found the sweet spot that eliminates clutch master cylinder rod freeplay simply using a 12mm wrench to tighten the lock nut holding the clutch master cylinder rod in place.
At this point the only clutch pedal freeplay left should be from the clutch master cylinder itself. You should see about a quarter of an inch of travel when testing with your pinky finger.
As I close out this video I want remind you that removing clutch pedal freeplay will move the clutch engagement point away from the floor. You might be bothered by having such a high clutch engagement point so it could take several adjustments to find a clutch engagement point that works for you.

This video helped me heaps! My accord euro had grinding issues when going into reverse and hard to go into first gear occasionally, turns out the clutch wasnt fully disengaged and following the video solved all my problems and potentially saved me money. Anyone else experiencing this should give this a try. Thanks a lot!

Excelent video. However, it is important to have a minimum freeplay to prevent the release bearing from constantly pressing on diaphragm springs and cause clutch slippage. I guess freeplay varies from models but on mine, Honda recommends freeplay between 8mm and 18mm

When you press clutch paddle.. you press straight down .. but what if sometimes you are moving your left leg from the resting plate and step on kind of from side and the motion is like instead of pressing it straight down but like 45 degree ... I know the paddle will still go down .. but will that do any damage to the paddle? Thanks

+Darren Walsh I promise I will go into more detail about this soon. General idea is keeping the car as stock as possible. I've had the K&N I take on two S2000s already so in the event that I do something it will be something different. I mostly want to spend my money on consumables and seat time. Would love to do some tire, brake, and mod reviews.

after replacing the master and slave cylinders because the master was leaking - I'm noticing that the engagement/disengagement all happens at the very top of pedal travel - within maybe the first inch. It didn't seem to be so high or such a short amount of pedal travel before. Does this suggest that the clutch is almost gone, even though mileage is barely 45000?

My honda civic freeplay seems to increase and decrease on it's own depending on driving style. For example. I would have the amount of freeplay as you showed in the beginning under normal driving conditions and then when I am needing to hold the clutch pedal down halfway for longer e.g. parking or moving in slow traffic, I find that the freeplay gets extra sloppy and ends up being almost halfway down before feeling pressure and then at some point during the rest of the drive it automatically readjusts itself to what it was before. So would adjusting it like shown in the video be any help?

With a new clutch adjusting like in the video makes the engagement at the very top of the pedal. Is it ok to adjust so there’s a lot more pedal play so it engages more about 1/2 pedal travel?
@LoveLikeaHurricane
@LoveLikeaHurricane 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. But not adjusted too much where at the bottom of the pedal travel, your car is still slipping and causing the car to move. But if you adjusted that much, your bite point wouldn't be at the middle of the total pedal travel. What I find is that the bite point IS AT THE TOP OF THE PEDAL TRAVEL (of the tension part). Meaning if you adjusted the clutch to have more slop at the top...that Slop (freeplay) isn't part of the "tension part". Your bite point is still towards the top of the tension part.

Farther away from the floor actually. When you turn the rod clockwise you are actually extending it further into the clutch master master so you will feel the bite towards sooner, towards the top of the pedal.

It's just that simple! Thanks I'm gonna go do this now! EDIT: looked under there, found my clutch master cylinder leaking fluid... Now what do I do?

question, whenever i go from 1st to 2nd gear quickly it will sometimes produce a grinding sound. So ive been shifting extra slow and really shifting it to 2nd with emphasis in order to avoid the grinding. Do you think this could be a possible solution? Thank you for the video btw! Learning alot

Could be a lot of things. There is a TSB for this: www.s2ki.com/public/library/TSB/A00-055.pdf Otherwise it’s probably your synchros. You can try different transmission fluid but it probably won’t have dramatic results.

What happens if you over tighten the rod past the first point of slight resistance?
@DIYGuysvideo
@DIYGuysvideo Ай бұрын
You can potentially ride the clutch, similar to slightly pressing the clutch pedal at all times. Meaning your friction disk will not be as tightly clamped to the flywheel and this can lead to premature wear of the friction disc.

Yes I did that and that’s exactly what happened. I loosened it again and the clutch no longer slips/disengages, but I feel the pedal get tighter as I use it and also noticed the fluid is getting dark rather quickly. (I changed the master and slave cylinders 2 weeks ago). Did I break the master cylinder by over tightening it?

Heya, As you know I've been following your vids for a while. Problem though! I've installed a new master cylinder, went to adjust freeplay - loosened 12mm nut, and for some reason I can't turn the rod? Is it cos it's a new CMC and it might be a bit tight? I've done it with my old CMC a while ago and I remember it was as you described "no effort to turn". Any ideas? :)

Update! With grippier gloves I can adjust the rod, however it is still extremely tight! To the point where if I go all the way one way, it disconnects the rod from the whole assembly. Pretty much, there is resistance across the whole rod adjustment rather than any "no resistance" range.

@DIYGuysvideo 6 жыл бұрын
Loosen it until there is no resistance and the tighten from there.
@huangyishi
@huangyishi 6 жыл бұрын
DIYGuys there is no point where there is no resistance. Kept going and it screwed out lol.
@DIYGuysvideo
@DIYGuysvideo 6 жыл бұрын
In that case you can just screw until you see the piston of the clutch master cylinder move. It will be subtle to see. At that point you want to stop and back it off a little.

DIYGuys lemme give it a try tomorrow. 5am where I am lol. Thanks for the response :) I've done it before on the old clutch master cylinder and that was like you said.. maybe just new oem tightness.

is it bad for the car or clutch disc if i adjust to lower engagement point?
@DIYGuysvideo
@DIYGuysvideo 7 жыл бұрын
+Ian P It won't be bad, unless you end up grinding gears more often. The worst case is adjusting the engagement too high so that the clutch disc is always slightly disconnected.

thank you for reply, just that high engagement point makes it hard driving in traffic, I'd have to lift the whole foot instead of resting my heel on the floor.

hey whats up. so i just replaced my master clutch cylinder because the old one was leaking. everything feels mutch better but the clutch feels a bit lower to the floor then i would like and wanted to raise it up some by loosening the lock nut behind the clutch pedal like you show here. like an idiot i ended up tightening the nut instead of loosening and now i cant seem to loosen it. any tips on how to get it out. it feels i stripped it a little. is it maybe because the threats are screwed?
@DIYGuysvideo
@DIYGuysvideo 6 жыл бұрын
So the nut is rounded off? Vice grips maybe?
@DIYGuysvideo

Also the clutch pedal engaging low is probably air in the lines still.

Tried it this morning and couldnt turn it so I had to release a bit of pressure from the slave cylinder, only a slight turn until fluid spat out then nipped it up, went under the peddle and it turned, turned it in and took the car for a spin, clutch stop slipping,
