All the heat cycles from the welding have compromised any original heat treatment. The overall strength is likely to be less than half the original strength. I give it two weeks.

If truckwill be overloaded again, the spindle will break in the very same section. Any welding is weaker than the two steel compositions, it is a superior quality steel for the spindle production. Conclusion: it will break again soon in the same section.
@martinswiney2192
@martinswiney2192 11 ай бұрын
Wrong. It will break on one side of the weld or the other. As they are different hardness metals the weld in this case is softer and a bit more flexible. It will be put on an overloaded truck and it will break. But most likely on the outboard side of the weld. Also never mind repairing the beat up threads on the end of the spindle. Nothing to see there at all

Fantastically resourceful and skilled repair. The one thing that always worries me when welding takes place in the lathe is where is the earth clamp? If it's just placed on the bed either all or some of the current will be passing through the headstock bearings which will drastically shorten their working life and accuracy.

These guys do repairs on items that practically never fail in western countries. Why do they fail in Pakistan? Three reasons: # Terrible roads with pot holes that overstress suspensions; # They overload their trucks; # the parts were locally made from melted scrap metal of unspecified properties. So, in that context, frequent breakdowns and accidents is what they think is normal and has to be endured.

You should be able to do a repair that will work on that. Mount it up on the lathe and pour out the center where that spindle goes but don't go all the way to the edge of that disc like part. Just bore out the diameter of the spindle. Now get a good piece of metal that's already heat treated and turn it down. Good carbide tool should cut it, but If it's too difficult, you could use a tool post grinder. Make a step in the shaft about 1/32" over the hole diameter. Maybe 1/64":(hard to tell without actually holding the part in my hand). Then make a second step about a half inch past the thickness of the knuckle. Champfer that edge. The temp difference is about 400F. You could probably heat the one part and avoid the dry ice if you had to. You can make up some by heating more, but you can start getting close to the temperatures that anbeal thf metal if your not careful, depending on your alloy. The expansion coeficient should he around 0.0000065/F. So multiply your hole diameter by that, and then multiply by your temperature difference. (Dry ice is around -100F) So a 2" shaft at a 400 degree difference should get you about 0.0052". So make it about 3-4 thousandths over. It should drop right in. The lock in place and never come out. shaft. Then turn the spindle profile down on the front side and cut the shaft off the back side. You could probanly get away with making the shaft a bit smaller and pressing it in. If yoyr a bit nervous about it just being pressed in, before you cut it you could cut oyt the center of tge back side to a quarter inch above the surface, and then peen over the edge so that there would be somthing holding the spindle on if sonething goes catastriphiclu wrong like the knuckle cracks. Would i fix that? Probably not unless I had no other choice. But it could be dove in a way that should hold.

Vernier… “very near”?…… for precise press fits? Spindles usually bend instead of breaking at that point. How did it break?.. wreck? Not sure I’d trust it. Broken spindle would give you a wild ride

This truck was most likely overloaded from the start, I'm sure they will overload it again. In the long run, they would have saved money to just replace the part. When it breaks again and I mean soon the truck will be out of service and not making money.

They make these repairs all the time. You're correct they'll overload it and the bad roads will break it again. You are wrong if you think it's much weaker than original. If you ever travel to the 3rd world you'll be amazed at the vehicles they keep on the road. Almost everything is repaired out of necessity.
