So glad you made a video on this! I know you have strong opinions on Coach. ;) Let me clarify that I don't think Coach is a luxury brand, I think they made some bags (not all) that are equivalent in quality to some bags (not all) from luxury brands like LV. I love what you said about LV quality and I agree 100%. Interesting what you're saying about exclusivity and luxury. I think you know I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum on that one. I can't help but think of how widely available so many bags from LV are so I wonder, to people for whom exclusivity is important, if LV would still be considered a luxury brand in light of that? What you're saying about quality being low on your priority list for defining a luxury brand...fascinating! Interesting what you're saying about the definition of luxury, too. I tend to use it in a much more broad way than how it's used with luxury fashion houses but I understand what you're saying and you explained it well. Great point about societal perceptions of brands and how Coach is more meaningful in America. You mentioned the heritage of brands being part of your definition of a luxury brand. Coach definitely has a known heritage here - not sure if people in other countries are as familiar with that - and being an American brand is certainly part of it's popularity. Thank you for all the kind words and for doing this video. You did a great job with it.. :) I think a lot of this comes down to perceptions and what is important to people and I find it fascinating how they explain and justify their different opinions. I also love debating things like this with intelligent and respectful people so I really enjoyed your take. My last video with the pyramid on the thumbnail is also on this general topic and I would love to see your approach to it (ranking brands based on criteria that are important to you). Oh, poor editing Connor!

Hey Autumn! Thank you so much for commenting, and your original video, made for a great watch and sparked some ideas from myself! I did try to preface the video in saying that you didn’t think Coach was a “luxury brand” and were just citing examples on the selection of bags you believed had the same quality as LV etc, apologies if that got lost but I certainly knew what you meant from your video as you did explain it clearly at the beginning. I guess I see things from a very literal scope where I can segregate my opinion on luxury. Luxury as a verb and adjective are different. With the part about exclusivity, I guess I’m stating it more from what the brand is trying to put out, eg. LV and Chanel generously hiking RRP prices to keep things “more out of reach” and in turn, making their items more “exclusive”. If you’re looking at it from the lens of buying preloved bags at cheaper prices on the preloved market, then it’s more obtainable than buying brand new. Comes down to the way you look at it. I do have to laugh at myself when I put quality at the bottom, but I more mean I’m not initially attracted to the quality of a bag, before the other factors. In saying that, I’d never buy a bag that was of poor quality or had visible defects, but it would checked off my list last, so to speak. It’s refreshing to be able to have these conversations with like-minded intelligent creators where we can just have a conversation about our views, still respecting each other, and walking away with a different perspective. I never go into these videos with the mindset of “this is my way or the highway”, as I like to see the full picture from both sides and hopefully learn something new which can add perspective to my thoughts. Thank you again ❤️

There's a guy who physically deconstructs different bags and Chanel comes out very poorly, and Coach and Aspinal of London come out well for value for money and quality. Coach has more of an eye for trends, I think Aspinal is a bit matronly but they do make good purses (wallets in US speak) and card holders, various items that are more refined than some American heritage brands. JIMO The Bridge is also a quality heritage brand. A lot of influencers are selling all or most of their high end bags and instead focusing on vintage. What's the point of high end bags if you aren't safe to wear them out? I understand Dayle is in a safe area but those who use public transport, or go to densely populated areas are risking it IMO

Must say, Coach brand isn't as well known in Australia. Now I've tried the brand though, I'm hooked. I own several pieces from recent collections, and several vintage pieces too (which are really hard to get in Australia). I'm an art lover also, so hoping Coach do more artist collaborations. I see overseas they have even released pieces in exotic leather like python and alligator!

Yes. I got the jist of Autumns Video ….. Coach is luxury as she’s showing the high end quality bags. Just as Michael Kors also has the high end level line of bags too. But $1000 for Coach & MK to Dior 10,000 in Cdn 🇨🇦 dollars or more $12K for classic Chanel here🇨🇦 can’t compare. Though quality on high end is not that great these days ,,,,,, Maybe Coach bags leathers may be better??👍🏼😂😂 💕🙏🏼🩷

I don’t think Coach is a luxury brand, but I’m also starting to think that brands like Gucci, LV, etc., are not luxury any longer. They are starting to feel like very expensive fast fashion, and a brand like Gucci has outlets and puts pieces on sale. Plus, their pieces are readily available. I live in the US Midwest and 10-15 years ago, it was very rare you would see LV, Gucci, etc., and now I see it the same way I saw brands like Coach about 10-15 years ago. So in my mind the question isn’t is Coach a luxury brand, but are brands like LV, Gucci, etc., still luxury brands.

Luxury is in the eye of the beholder. Luxury is not always defined by brand. Taking a vacation could be a luxury to someone. Getting a spa treatment could be a luxury to someone. I am so tired of hearing people decide on a specific brand as being luxury and it is usually the people who can afford higher price bag. The person who wrote the definition of luxury was probably one of those people. Who decides that it is different.

I love Coach bags and have been to their flagship store in NYC a number of times. (It's closing by the way, I can't believe it) I have quite a few of their high end bags. I use them more than I do my LVs bags because they can take the hard work. I have bags from the 90's and a few that my aunty gave me and I still use some of them. The Coach is well made and a workhorse of a bag. I will consider them low low end lux because they when into the outlet business.

I think their Outlet stores with their outlet made bags are damaging the brand. The complains about their bags being low quality and hardware scratching easily are probably bags bought from the outlet. The Coach bags sold in the boutique are high quality leather made with solid brass hardware.

@@jy3754 Sure, but my Coach bags (Tabby 26) were not outlet bags. After a few months the hardware had major wear and I sold both with loss. It’s the same problem with all mid range bags, Furla, Coccinelle etc, they make them in cheap countries and it’s basically just fast fashion with better leather and a higher price tag.

Interesting points. Thanks for this video. I’ve been buying luxury goods since the late ‘90’s. I can tell you that when I was in college (University to you Down Under) and I worked in a department store, I can tell you that Coach, Dooney and Gucci being sold side by side in the handbag department. I bought a Coach bag in 1998 for $200, and a Louis Vuitton Speedy 25 in 2002 for $365. As you can see, there was not much of a price difference. I agree that part of what you pay for is the heritage etc., but Louis Vuitton has done nothing in 21 years that I have been buying to justify increasing the price 5X. And, they no longer use the thicker canvas that was so durable and stopped using brass hardware. I don’t or can’t define luxury by price or say that raising prices is what will make something more exclusive because it’s nothing but marketing to make people feel they are getting something superior and keep the item aspirational. I own many brands from Hermès to Portland leather goods, and I can say with confidence that in terms of quality, many of the lower priced brands are just as good quality as the top tier brands. Real exclusivity to me is something that’s custom made or personalized. You can get that from Coach, Longchamp, Louis Vuitton, and Hermès. The rest is really mass market, because you can buy it if you want to pay. Some items may be hard to get, but that doesn’t make them exclusive.
@THECLOSETbyConnor
@THECLOSETbyConnor 4 ай бұрын
Hey Dawn, Thank you for your comment and for watching the video. You make some great points on brands such as LV doing nothing different to justify the 5x price increases, and to add insult to injury, having a lesser quality product. I believe that’s the “arrogance” of exclusivity, making something more expensive, regardless of the overall quality, to price out a demographic of people. I too agree that customization with any of the brands is always a top tier luxury experience, and was surprised to learn that from Autumn’s video with the tabby bag (I think). On the Coach Australia website we don’t seem to have that function and must be an American exclusive experience, which makes sense. Thank you again for your comment 🩵
@dawnlovescouture2644
@dawnlovescouture2644 4 ай бұрын
@@THECLOSETbyConnor Thanks Connor! I think it’s less about being priced out and more about not willing to pay for things that have been inflated for no discernible reason. It’s more about marketing. Many people believe that a higher price gives something status, when I feel that status should come from many factors, including quality. If for example Kia raised prices on their cars to price out a certain demographic, at the end of the day it’s still a Kia. If the quality isn’t there then I and many people can’t find a reason to pay five times what something used to cost to own it. I would rather spend elsewhere. Yes, in the US we have Coach Create, which offers several bags to be customized although right now only the Tabby is available. I don’t consider Coach to be a luxury brand but it is a brand with a legacy going back about 74 years. In a country that’s less than 250 years old, that’s going back pretty far.

I really liked the way you respectfully provided your opinion here. One thing that stood out to me in your response is stating that luxury is exclusive. You also explained that Louis Vuitton's quality is not as good because they are trying to keep up with all of the demand since, so many additional people are now buying LV. Does that mean, in your opinion, LV is moving away from being a luxury brand? I am interested in this part of your argument. I agree, Coach is not luxury. I have found some beautiful Coach bags, but I haven't yet found one that matches the quality of a "luxury brand". That being said I looked up the definition of luxury, as a noun it is defined as "the state of great comfort and extravagant living". As an adjective it is defined as: "luxurious or of the nature of a luxury." . There is nothing here to suggest exclusivity in any way. However, one could argue that this does equate to quality/comfort. I am wondering how you came to the conclusion that to be luxurious or a luxury brand it must be exclusive? Or are you implying that you have to be rich to be extravagant and thus, not everyone is rich, so not everyone can afford a "luxury" brand? I would love to have you speak more on your conclusion of exclusivity. :-)
@THECLOSETbyConnor
@THECLOSETbyConnor 4 ай бұрын
Hey Jame, thank you for your comment and for watching. With regard to the definition, I googled: luxury brand. If I’m simply looking up the definition of luxury, it’s going to provide the conclusions you’ve written, which is too broad a word I guess to hone in on the context. I probably should have specified that haha. You do raise a good point about the demand increasing, which in turn is resulting in more people purchasing Louis Vuitton - thus making it less exclusive. I believe Louis Vuitton, Chanel etc clearly see this happening too, which arguably is the reason for the aggressive price hikes and “million dollar speedy bags” to steer their brands back onto track to a more exclusive thing. I guess if you’re to break it down, yes you do need to have money or connections (for certain bags and items, cue the Chanel Heart Bag which only VIPS could purchase from boutique) to stay in the game. Am I one of those people? With some bags yes, but with others no. Unless my income increases with the price increase %, then maybe I’ll be priced out too. Hope that clarifies my take on it a little more ❤️

We all know that I love love love Autumn Beckman. I agree more with you. However I do agree that the nostalgia thing plays in a lot for me. Back in the 90s Coach made amazing leather bags that they touted as being handmade in NYC. Coach would also "spa" them including replacing leather trim for free for the life of the bag so we could check the outstanding service box. At the time I remember Coach leather as more coveted (and if memory serves more expensive) than a canvas LV bag. And don't get me started on a nylon Prada bag. Those of us buying the Coach leather bags could not comprehend the point of them. Coach has since become more mass produced and so has LV and Chanel for that matter. LV and Chanel's customer experience has also declined over the years.

Well, I thought similarly to you before I actually did research on these brands and the LV monogram. It is a monogram pattern, not logos. The reason there are LV's in the monogram is because LV doesn't own the stars and flowers in their monogram pattern or the the Damier patterns, and other brands were copying the original Damier Ebene pattern. The LV's were put in the monogram pattern to distinguish it from copy cats. I think the monogram pattern is stunning.

For me, the luxury (money I pay) is in the materials used which are usually of a higher quality/scarcity/delicate nature, intricacies involved in its manufacture, the product availability and the House/Company’s history. Oh and me being the first to own it. That’s what I pay for with luxury, be it fashion, homewares, cars, holidays or food. Obviously excluding food (there’s no seconds there!) second-hand luxury goods aren’t as luxurious if they’ve been used by someone else - they just don’t have that same feeling as me being the 1st owner. Taking a holiday may be a luxury but that isn’t the same as a luxury holiday. I do own second hand luxury and still love it because it lets me have a luxury experience I couldn’t have afforded otherwise so whilst it’s a luxury to me, it isn’t the definition of it.

I agree with some points in your video and I do love being a part of this conversation because my two fave brands happen to be Coach and Louis Vuitton so I own a lot of both brands and can really dig into this conversation knowing the history of both. Coach "Retail" and "outlet" are two different things and I think people don't know the difference which can be tricky too especially if you don't buy from the brand. Coach "retail" has plenty of history behind their bags just like Hermes has the cute little airplane story with Jane Birkin lol . The coach retail bags are even made by artisans. I think Coach is a luxury for a lot of people I mean lets be honest I worked for Coach retail specifically and most people did not walk in and want to spend $800 on a handbag. No its not $3k but I personally would not spend that money without thinking it over lol. I think about that just as hard as I do my LV purchases. Even if you go to a flagship Coach store, there are exotics of some classic coach bags that cost like 8k so I guess my question is, is an 8k Chanel bag a luxury but an 8k coach bag is not ?? Thats I where the grey area is for a lot of people because coach price range is pretty large and can be as low as $150 and as high as 10k and everything in between. I like the point that you made about exclusivity being luxurious but how exclusive can a brand like Chanel or LV really be when everyone now has access to credit cards and after pay etc and now everyone has the same classic flap or never full? When on the other hand Caleb Snell just got a coach bag from an exclusive collection and they only made 20 units and him getting that bag was harder than life itself lol. So in conclusion I think Coach is a luxury to the "average" person who may not be apart of the whole handbag community here like we are and may be the most expensive bag they ever own in their life. They are not Chanel but I don't think an $800 coach Rogue bag is anything to sneeze at either lol. I love the video Connor! ❣Very detailed.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this subject. By the way you always present the subject in an entertaining way too : ). Just to add, I know Coach have a heritage/history tied to their brand. They were created shortly before Dior and the bags were shortly inspired after by the glove tanned leather used in baseball gloves but I agree that there are other variables besides quality that defines a "luxury brand" so I would say Coach is not a luxury brand by definition in my opinion especially since they do not market themselves as one but from what I have felt they do produce some excellent quality bags and have excellent customer service from what I have seen. Whether it is Coach or another brand, I think someone can still have a luxurious experience if the product quality, customer experience are there and it felt like a treat for them. I can see that as a luxury for them. Sophie Shohet had done a video a while ago, I don't remember which one but she spoke about what is luxury and one of the definitions she mentioned I believe was taken from an article that noted that what makes something luxurious is how it makes us feel so luxury doesn't have to have a brand tied to it either. Have a great weekend.

If you aren’t judging on quality, and only heritage and influence than no one else can get in and that’s exactly why Chanel thinks they can give lesser quality for high price. You are right. Lower priced brands like Coach would never be as desirable as high priced ones. It’s based on economic theory of “A Veblen good is a type of luxury good, named after American economist Thorstein Veblen, for which the demand increases as the price increases, in apparent contradiction of the law of demand, resulting in an upward-sloping demand curve.”

I enjoyed this vlog very much and agree with your assessment wholeheartedly. Tanner Leatherstein said that the quality of Coach bags is excellent. He went on to say that the hardware on Coach bags could rival any luxury brand. However, as you stated, quality alone is not enough to elevate Coach into the luxury stratosphere. My very first bag was a Dooney & Bourke, then I graduated to Coach and then made the jump to Louis Vuitton. I sold my entire LV collection last year because the brand is feeling too mass produced for my liking. I am now buying bags from both Celine and Loewe but have my eye squarely focused on a Joseph Duclos Messenger bag for this year. Joseph Duclos exudes French luxury at its best, in my humble opinion. You are very bright by the way (in case you didn’t already know)😉

I’ve seen items from most brands that are luxury quality and items from those same brands that are poorly constructed with crap materials. The only brands I consider luxury at this point in time is Hermes, Moynat, Delvaux and most items from Loewe and the Row. Luxury is 100% about quality. If you compare brands like LV, Fendi, Chanel etc next to brands like Hermes it’s clearly obvious which is luxury and which isn’t.

Great video. You've really started an interesting conversation here, or Autumn did, and I'm here for it. I am not a fan of Coach. There's only one Coach bag I like, and I love it, the Rogue. I do think luxury is in the eye of the beholder. If it's not something you need, costs more than you'd usually spend, and it makes you feel good, then to me it is luxury. We can all define it differently and the traditional definition you stated isn't one I buy into. Of course, these luxury brands want us to define it that way. There is very little in the way of exclusivity in the luxury market. Even Birkin's, Kelly's and Classiic Flaps aren't exclusive. They may be hard to get in the boutique and extremely expensive, but they have flooded the preloved market. Being expensive and being exclusive are different. Anyone can have a Birkin and Kelly if they desiried to spend a hefty sum. Someday, I will spend that hefty sum. I really believe I'm being played by the luxury brands, but what can I say? I love it.

I can afford designers bags , but I don’t like being associated with brands like Chanel , LV, Fendi. It feels irresponsible and insensitive toward other less fortunate people . Basically , the quality is my main goal , and coach has a great quality. Better than high ends. Exclusivity play no role on how I see a brand . Their main customer base are customer with medium income . So no, they are not exclusive. They are selective and good at marketing . I actually started with high end , but went to coach after realizing the quality is not a factor on why destined bag are expensive .

Agree Connor that the brands have to tick ALL the boxes to be seen as a luxury brand. Quality of materials and labour is not enough - also need heritage /status /design /exclusivity etc. I also agree that it depends on nostalgia- Coach is not as well known in the UK as USA. I definitely don’t remember it at all when I was growing up. In the UK a lot of people aspired to Mulberry for their first step into ‘luxury’ followed by the next step to Louis Vuitton. So that nostalgia def plays a part. Fab video Connor x

I’ve had a really bad run with LV as of late. When the speedy 20 in DE came out my SA had to order 3 bags as they were all messed up in some way. I finally just gave up. My first mini bumbag the pouch on front was sewn on so crooked it was ridiculous, the second was fine. The last bag I ordered was the Malletage Alma bb & it was a whole mess. I’m not a picky buyer either. I don’t look over a bag with a microscope to look for any little flaw. Only glaringly obvious things bother me. Now I’ve been seeing several people get flawed mini bumbags in the empreinte leather. It’s really sad how the quality has just tanked at LV & Chanel as well. I haven’t had any issues with Fendi or Dior. So I get where Autumn is coming from.

For me personally, a bag not being super saturated is more of a luxury. Although I love the Jodi and it is luxury, I would never buy it knowing everyone has it. I would rather a different "less popular" style from the same house. It would be the same as feeling like the neverfull not being luxury but a Cappucines is. I think there are "tiers" even within luxury brands.

Another great video Connor! Autumn's video, very well done with charts and grading of brands, was also thought provoking. Also, it was her recap of the brands. Imagine this scenario, Coach increasing prices regularly as well as adding a little more "style" to their assortment while maintaining the same beautiful higher end leathers and hardware that they use in retail? (Btw, Coach outlets are not the same as their retail). I wonder if that would put them on the same trajectory as Lux brands and create the head game?

Interesting and controversial topic. Luxury in my opinion is how much people are willing to pay for a name and history and image. I refuse to pay thousands of dollars for Chanel costume jewelry where other platforms are selling similar or the same product for $20 let say. It may not be in a nice black box with camellia flower but it’s the same cheap non precious metal. I also find Gucci, Prada, Fendi and other luxury brands at TJMax, Marshalls or Winners heavily discounted. Is that exclusivity? Luxury is in the eye of the beholder in my opinion. I do buy unique Coach bags which wear beautifully unlike some of my LV bags. The exclusive experience of waiting 6 months to 8 months and sometimes longer to get nearly brand new item repaired has lost my confidence in luxury. Great video and thank you for sharing your opinion.

Coach isn't a 'Luxury' brand in any way. However their product is far better than lots of luxury brands. All prices being equal I'd buy a coach bag over Chanel any day. Autumn Beckmann is fabulous, and I watched her video too! 😃. I don’t recall her saying Coach SHOULD be a luxury brand like you just stated on your video response, i think her point was coming more from a quality point of view of which, according to your vid; don’t care much for, just the name recognition. Personally, I think LV is loosing its “exclusivity” when everyone and their dog has one no matter how much they raise their prices. I guess if you feel like you are carrying luxury due to the amount of brand logos you have on you makes you feel exclusive, then more power to ya. One should value quality over a luxury logo, but that’s just me.

Anything that cost 200-500 dollars and up are luxury. Why would you buy a bag that is worth 200 for a single one when you can buy a Uniqlo bag for only 20-30 dollars and you have more money left to buy other stuff with it? Also Coach, MK and Kate Spade are entry level luxury. If someone tells you otherwise, they are just pretentious and cannot admit to themselves that you can buy a luxury bag below a thousand dollars or those who are easily persuaded by a mere marketing scheme. For those who own the bags I mention, be proud of it. Flaunt it with no shame because most people wouldn't even consider having those bags if they have 200-500 dollars lying around.

Luxury houses exclusivity can also include entry- way pieces to engage consumers- LV canvas . As income increases over lifespan one might increase spending to more exclusive pieces so houses have brand loyalty . Coach lacks the artistic innovation and creative direction - muddying the waters of their higher end pieces with masses of poor quality overpriced items.

Thank you for saying it outloud; the stupidity around expensive does not equal high quality. Tho i do agree that it is what it is, we buy things way more expensive that they cost/should cost and i’m also guilty of it sometimes but there should be a minimal standard at least (even this sounds stupid) of the quality Brands should offer but look where we are; consumers are way too forgiving when it comes to these high luxury brands honestly its becoming almost like a meme. A troll. CHANEL, LV are the first that come to mind when typing this. I’m always impressed with Coach’s bags quality and how the SAs treat customers (the boutiques not outlets, but even outlets SAs treat u nicely). Definitely always getting my money’s worth. Where as for Chanel/LV my experience has been really different, both in the goods quality & in the service.

Speaking of which, of late i have a canvas key clay which i had used only recently after purchasing for a year ago, some see thru sewing lines in it. I will need to bring that back to LV and see what they can do with it. I have watch video that some KZfaqrs complaint about this too. So i have i will have luxury experience...lol.

I started with Coach and Tory B myself but still, it wasn’t luxury to me. I was dreaming about getting a Chanel bag, like you said, I still see it like more exclusive. It’s way easier to enter Coach and get a bag on the spot than entering a luxury brand with a way different price tag. It’s just the reality. If I see someone with a Hermès bag on their arm, I automatically associate it with luxury. If I see someone with a Coach bag, I just don’t think luxury. It might be for someone because it’s still cost a lot, but objectively it takes more than that to be called luxury. Luxury is a dream, it’s not easily attainable. It’s like the luxury resorts, we can say whatever but it’s really not the same as a 3 stars. The 3 stars might feel luxurious for someone that had never been to a resort but it still not luxury . It’s what the brand represents as a whole and all the things surrounding it.
