I recently found out that I have some bad juju going on in my spine and my neurosurgeon pretty much limited be significantly on what I can do exercise wise while I try to lose weight. But he said swimming would be the best thing I can do and yoga. So Ive been doing research for an hour and came onto these videos and they are very informative and I really appreciate you taking your time to make them. This definately gives me a starting point. Now I just got to get my gear and hit the gym. :)

Was recently told I can't cycle anymore due to knee problems... doctor suggested that swimming would be a good replacement for me. I know how to swim... but never learned how to swim the proper way. Thanks for the videos, they are really helpful in my quest to teach myself to swim the right way.

Thank you. I'm currently training for a sprint triathlon. The hardest part is the swim in terms of breathing and tiredness in my shoulders and arms. I go to the gym regularly and do alot of running. Swimming since I was 7 years old. Just need to be able to keep going without stopping - like when I jog, very rarely get fatigued. So I want to replicate this in my swimming. I do approx. 1 mile of swimming per week. All advice welcome. I,ve looked at yojr first 3 videos in the series. Regards Kieron

Hey Robb. I'm having severe troubles with my right meniscus, so I was told I should go swimming instead of jogging (which I used to do). Like most people, I can swim. But like most people, I also never learnt how to do it properly. These videos are a great help in improving my technique and becoming more efficient. Thank you for your efforts -- they are appreciated!

Thanks for this series. I find them very easy to follow. Got back in the pool today after a few weeks away and never really tried simply floating and finding my ideal body position before but it works. Even did it mid lap a few times.

Robb Beams Thank you! Where would I begin? Haha! Keep posting videos, they're helping me with the finer points of my struggles. I'm not very fast and my best strokes are breaststroke and oddly, back stroke, my fastest yet. Front crawl, or freestyle, very difficult for me - can't seem to rotate just right to breathe without over rotating. Do you suggest using a pull buoy and working the strokes first? Or practicing breathing drills first? I'm a bit confused sometimes.
@CoachRobbBeams
@CoachRobbBeams 10 жыл бұрын
Deborah Herriage Definitely start with your breathing. The pull buoy will actually help make this drill easier to implement. Please watch that video and let me know if you have any struggles with the drill. Then we can go into specific drills to improve your efficiency in the water. Also, if you have any video of you swimming, I can help you with specifics to speed up your development as a swimmer. Just let me know the link so that I can look and provide you feedback. -Coach Robb

Great question-this concept is so subtle, it is easy to "push through it". To help you get the "feel" of creating pressure on your chest, place a kickboard underneath your chest muscles and balance on the board. Your body will naturally try to push the board down, once you are balanced, swim off of the board. Another trick is to push off the wall and glide for 1-2 seconds and then take 1-3 strokes and then repeat. Pls keep me posted. -Coach Robb

I can't seem to grasp the concept of pushing down on my chest. How can you do that without leverage? My tendency is to pike which I know is wrong. Do you try to make your shoulder blades touch? Do you arch your back? Help!

Hi! I think your videos cover almost everything for non professional swimmer. I am doing good at two out of 4 principles you taught such as staying tall and law hydrodynamics. However breathing without lifting head is my challenge or breathing by turning the head, almost every time water comes to my mouth. I also panic when I know that the side of pool I am at the moment swimming is deeper than my height. When I panic I start lifting my head and law of hydrodynamics works against me.

Elmira-thank you for the update. How are you doing with exhaling completely before you breathe. The tendency is to hold your breathe until you get ready to breathe - this leaves you little time to exhale and then inhale in time. If you can video yourself swimming, I can look at what is going on and help you clean it up. Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything clarified. -Coach Robb
@elmira5908

Robb Beams with regard to exhaling I actually exhale under the water through my nose. Since my breathing is not good and it would disrupt my swimming I tend to exhale longer than required then I gasp for air. I will try to tape it and send you.

Hi, I just recently subscribed to your youtube channel. I am a 29 year old female adult whom is just learning how to swim now. I've browsed through your videos and I cant find anyone that talks, teaches and shows how to swim from the very beginning. Right now in my swimming class I am trying to learn how to float and petal my feet with the swimming barbell float bar and I am extremely afraid. I also cant seem to hold my breath under the water or swallowing the water. Would you have any advise?
@CoachRobbBeams
@CoachRobbBeams 11 жыл бұрын
Dona-thank you for your email! Your hips ONLY drop if you pick your head up (which happens when you rotate to breathe). When you get a chance do these two drills to re-wire your body's balance. 1. Swim with a pull buoy and keep your stomach tight (this keeps your back straight). 2. Swim with a tennis ball under your chin. This will help keep your head from lifting when you rotate to breathe. If you get a moment, capture a film of you swimming & I will review and help you as well. Good luck!

I think I have two ideas for a new video. If you could teach how to stop in the middle of the water and swim backwards. In the pool it is kinda easy to do, you stop at one end and you push yourself away against the wall of the pool. But when you are in a lake where there is no walls, how to push yourself away granted you have only water all around you. I think it is basic for some people but not exactly for new learners like me. Another request is how to swim under the water, not freestyle but underneath water. I tried to swim under the water but my hip keeps coming on the surface of water like a bouye. Thank you in advance.
