That press conference was painful. Pelley sounds like a typical CEO that has no clue of reality (let's hope that's the last time we ever hear from him), Shanahan had no answers or much to say (he's lost). Treliving sounded the most genuine but has to run all deals through everyone above him (to bad cause he's the only one that sounds like he knows what he's doing). Basically, we got a whole lot of nothing today and that's what I expected.

Because he makes them lots of money. Like Pelley said, Leafs Nation is bigger then 9 years ago. As much as they say that are not here to sell Jerseys, they are. Winning isn't everything as much as they say it is.

Shanahan better be a lot smarter going forward than he has been. He signed off on all the crap that Dubas wanted, big salaries for players who have won nothing and no trade clauses that handcuffed the team for years. Nobody had a chance to win with this team and many knew that but not Shanny.

The fact they did not fire Shanny speaks volumes. Prepare for another season of minor changes, mediocre adds at the deadline and another familiar feeling come playoff time. The whole organization is rotten from the core. The worst part about it is everyone knows what needs to be done, the problem is there is no motivation to do it from a financial perspective. The money printing machine that is MLSE keeps rolling regardless of what Mr Pelley says about "not worried about selling jerseys". We will all look back at this leafs core in 10 years and be bewildered how this team was incapable of winning a cup, let alone a few playoff series.

Brendan is a Champion calibre hockey guy that is positioned to be the buffer between the GM/coach/player level and the Board Rep (Pelley) and the Board itself. This org will never again resemble anything like a single-billionaire ownership model. No more Ballard or Melnyk type nonsense--at least there's that. Hope springs...

Dubas collected all these highly talented players, but didn’t have the experience or wherewithal to manage them correctly. He was a natural born scout and identifier of talent, but not a GM. A true GM relies on guys like Dubas in that regard. The two are mutually exclusive. You’re not supposed to just let typecast players accumulate, you’re supposed to manipulate them to fulfil deficits. The roster became highly imbalanced. Now you compound that with a rookie head coach and Treliving has got a proverbial pile of 💩 in his lap. The true crux of the issue in the “Shanascam” was his original misguided belief in Dubas’ ability as a GM. You had a rookie President, a rookie GM, and a rookie HC.. all in prominent positions of organizational leadership trying to “learn on the fly.” It became a clear and obvious case of “the blind leading the blind.” Oh what a fiasco, and an entire waste of time!!

My take away is there committing to "improving the team" as Shanny stated but not a cup . Shanny has always stated this in his press meetings. The guy probably does not want to lie. Very true they have improved the team but unfortunetly decisions were not made with the sole focus of winning a cup. At the end of the day ownership makes decisions and the franchise has made the most revenue in the NHL for many years....neck in neck with Rangers.There wealthly not bc of how many jersey's they sell. Franchise is not supposed to win . Proof is in the pudding. Tough pill to swallow. I dont trust the players aswell. They dont have empathy and accountability which are too red flags. Who really owns this team....

i notice Toronto players that have been around for all or most of the last 8 years(forsure Tavares) seem to say "we are right there" alot. what exactly do they mean because i sure hope its not meaning to a stanley cup appearance/victory. all those years with getting bounced in the first round say otherwise. if theyre talking cup then they have a bigger problem then i thought because unless you're allover the playoff bracket IE confernce final, stanley cup final, second round throughout the years then the only thing youre "almost there" is referencing the second round which is absolutely disgusting to think that to them, thats a goal. i cant even believe the guys are saying that. almost there?? to what, a regular to round 2?? honestly, what the fuck is wrong with the Toronto Maple Leafs?!?!. complete ignorance.

i may be alone on this take, and of course theres alot of issues for the leafs but does anyone else get the vibe that matthews may be more of a cancer to the team than it seems? aside from his play/goals(of course hes a great player) but why do i get the sense he has an attitude, like a brush off everything that comes from coaches/management, in one ear out the other, non chalant about any thing negative no matter who it comes from, not taking anything serious, untouchable etc attitude which may rub off and ripple down through other guys in the room?? i dont mean him being an asshole or anything however sometimes when i see him he has this look on him like "yea yea whatever you say, im the man" kind of thing. the guy that laughs to himself while the team gets a lashing. i dont know i could be dead wrong and as i said of course theres a ton of issues for toronto but i feel like this goes unnoticed and may be a bigger issue than maybe even he himself may not see. love him as a player but anytime i see him on or off the ice, his vibe and look just give me a strange perception.

I may have thought that up until a couple of years ago, but I think that his media appearances in the last two years reflect a continued maturation. He seems like captain material to me off the ice. He still leaves something to be desired on the ice though.
