Good question as long as there is a cap on the bottom of the toilet flange. I use a piece of cardboard. You will just hear the shop vac sort of labor once it fills and then shut it off. I don’t get coal in the vac. Thanks hope that helps!

PPE (plastic process equipment) sells things called vacuum loaders. They work on the same principal and are very automatic, as in, leave it on all of the time and it will simply keep the hopper full on the stove/furnace.

Seems kind of risky leaving the hopper open like that all the time.
