Here's the video I promised of me fixing the engine that I showed during my go kart restoration video. Once again the goal was to get it into good working condition and clean it up a bit while spending as little money and time as possible. This isn't really a "restoration" video in my opinion. I'm not really sure what to call it, but I think it came out okay.

"Good as new", it's a Briggs and Stratton, so it doesn't need to be very good to fill that statement's promises.

Wew that could have been catastrophic if the engine ingested those screws. I'm guessing they came from the airbox since there was only that one sheet metal screw holding it on.

A nice way to derust a petrol tank is to use phosphoric acid instead of muriatic acid. Leaves a nice coating of iron phosphate, which prevents it from rusting again for a while. Also you can basically leave it in there as long as you like, it won't accidentally eat a hole through your tank.

how long do you need to leave it in there to get the rust out compared to muriatic?

@@M.TTT. depends on the concentration, I used a concentration somewhere below 5% and left it for several hours which seemed to work fine. You can't really cause damage with the stuff so just let it sit for a good long while

I have that very same engine....I believe it is dated somewhere along the mid 90s. I was 9yrs old when I had my first MANCO single seater go-kart and it had this very same engine😁👍🏻. Good times!!!!! I got into alot of trouble with that go-kart. I drove it 4 miles onto the city limit streets togo pick up a mountain dew n chips at a gas station and with my luck a state trooper pulled me over, he followed me home while drove my go-kart n got off with a verbal warning.

Those screws in the intake were from the air box and the smaller straight slot (flathead) screw was from the carburetor it held the butterfly in

I know nothing about small engines. That said, in about 1981, I had a go-kart with a similar repurposed single cylinder engine. It did not have a separate oil sump, but rather the oil was mixed directly with the gasoline.

Is there a specific model for this engine? I’m looking into getting started on go karts and I’m looking at something that isn’t too costly just to get started and got the idea to purchase an old blower motor like this one

It's just a variation of a standard Briggs and Stratton 5hp horizontal shaft. Underpowered for an adult sized go kart but plenty for a kid imo

Use Gasket(s) on the Side Cover, Folks. They are used not only for sealing but, for setting Crankshaft end-play.
@RestorationStation
@RestorationStation 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly the only reason I used RTV was because the gasket I ordered was on backorder and didn't arrive until the entire project was already done. Didn't seem to be any play in the crankshaft, but who knows I guess it could end up causing problems in the longrun

I worked on a similar motor for a generator, the fuel tank had an old foam baffle that rotted and the plastic fuel pickup tube dry rotted. A very frustrating setup. A new fuel tank was over $100. Ugh! The damn thing only ran on choke.

3:48 I am really surprised that didn't result in a seized engine. 99% of the time the crank will not spin without a gasket. Must have been some decent case wear to allow that feat. But then again the engine didn't consume a single screw despite the butterfly being free of the shaft.

So, here's the scenario. Let's jam the throttle wide open, grease up the brakes to reduce drag and we'll just use that grappling hook I tied on to stop, since the kill switch is probably broke too. Sure- it'll be okay, it won't go far since the tires are bad and the chain will probably fall off this thing anyway. LOL RIP last person to drive it?
