it’s curious how the trench gun that scared the crup out of the jerries in the great war evolved into mostly a mere door opener in the gwot. it would be interesting to know how much the mossberg 590a1 got used in iraq & ‘ganistan and whether it was used for more than breeching . . . good episode!

I know a few guys that carried tricked out 870s early in OIR. Yes they were lead breathers but the shoty was their primary weapon. Thx for posting

Probably due to the advancement of other weapon systems. At the time all they had where bolt action 20in rifles with 8in bayonets on the ends of them. Trying to use that against a a pissed off 17yr old marine in a 5 food wide trench was enough to soil yourself. Now days we stepped off trench warfare for the most part (excluding Ukraine) Such as Afghanistan where we’re taking pop shots from 500m + the shot gun is useless. Unless you’re clearing a house, a cave, or being a tunnel rat. That’s probably where the shot gun died out as major scale tipper.

I often wonder this myself. Seeing as how it’s not exactly a standard issue piece of kit I’ve never seen casualty statistics about shotguns like you do for the infantry rifle, squad MG, and even sidearms. I’m sure that seeing as how they were definitely carried and used by some in the GWoT and given the amount of urban combat that was seen in some cities in Iraq; I would imagine it definitely has a body count. During the Battle of Fallujah, some marines were issued and equipped with shotguns. I don’t know if they also had a rifle or if the shotgun was the primary combat weapon for them but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was a primary weapon seeing as how the marines were issuing Benelli M4’s with full length stocks which aren’t really necessary if it’s strictly a breaching device.

I’m a little long in the tooth and have been retired for a while. No military service. Was a career LEO started as a rookie, retired as an administrator for a large agency. During my 28+ years as an LEO, several of which were as a weapons instructor I put a substantial amount of lead through the pump guns. IMHO the fighting shotgun was one of the best firearms we had. It’s effective range was perfect for LE purposes being from 0 to over 100 yards in trained hands and the variety of special application loads for it was substantial. Most of my experience was with the Remington but also the 590A1 and the Howa 3000 under various brand names. I trust and personally own all three. God bless!

The more and more I get into setting up my at-home 'go to' defensive stuff, the more and more I like my shotgun for this role. I'm alone now so I don't have to worry about friendlies but I DO want to immediately STOP any and all baddies from potentially mussing up my hair or my face as I'm very delicate!

This video brings back an old memory from the nineties. I met Chief Petty Officer Jim "Patches" Watson (retired) at the UDT/SEAL museum summer 1994. Met Watson at the museum at Fort Pierce, FL. Watson had just published an book about himself and his experiences in the old UDT and the original SEAL TEAM 2. Watson wrote in his book he carried one of those old school pump shotguns as a point man for SEAL TEAM 2 in the Mekong Delta. If I remember it was an Ithaca 37. Watson autographed a SEAL book I bought at the museum and called me "hoss" Short for horse.

I was USAF EST late 70s to mid 80s. We had either full stock Winchester M12s or Remington 870s with folding stocks and pistol grips. We pulled info and tactics from as many operators of all branches as we could as we were pretty much writing our book as we went along then. Got our door breaching technique from you all. Great video Coch. We should have more videos on practical weapons like these as there are lots of fans/viewers from more than 70 countries where the use of semi auto rifles are prohibited thus cannot relate. I live in Canada and for almost 4 years, semi auto rifles like the AR platforms are damned here by politicians. We can only bet with our lives with the use of bolt rifles and scatterguns, even handguns cannot be bought here due to the freeze on sales. Good for you guys as only in the USA where you can choose whatever weapons you prefer. So in view of these things we hope you can post more and educate viewers with civilian weapons that are more generally and politically acceptable worldwide. More power with Tactical Hyve Coch!

Shotguns have really fallen out of favor for home defense with the popularity of shorty AR’s but they’re still a viable option. My dad, for example, isn’t an AR guy but he’s been shooting shotguns for decades. When helping him get setup for defense, we went with a 20 gauge 870 youth model. It’s light and handy with plenty of power to get the job done.

You have to respect the versatility of the shotgun. I chose one for home defense along with my 9mm sidearm. I load it with 4-0 buck ammo that is filled with .25 caliber shot. It avoids the possibility of over penetration, not that I have that problem.

I have an oddball shotty that I love. It's a Winchester Model 12 Heavy Duck with a solid rib barrel. Someone cut it down to 18 inches. So now it's basically a Riot format of that model, but instead of 2 3/4s it's now 3 inch capable and can slamfire also. It can also eat mini shells just fine. It's also now open bore as a dime can slip in it's barrel. So to me it's the Cadillac of pumps. Just hold down the trigger and pump away. Closest thing to a fully auto pump there is lol. I love the old war shottys. I aspire to one day get a flaming bomb trench model. A man can dream!

12 gauge pump with slugs rather than shot is better my opinion for hitting hard and reduce the collateral, I’m a novice but been using a 12 pump for forty years here in Canada, Govt doesn’t seem to be blacklisting these yet.

I live in a rural area on 12 acres and my Glock and my 870 would be go to guns for home defense. It depends on where you live and what you are most familiar with. I have the most time with a Glock and a shotgun and I like my ARs and AK platforms but nowhere near as much practice/training with them. I am intrigued by your 9mm AR pistol. I will have to save a few bucks and get one. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I run a Taurus judge for home defense but loaded with federal handgun buckshot. Tight pattern at 10 yards and not enough power to go through walls and be lethal. HOWEVER, gel tests show it's easily lethal without walls to go through. Each pellet does 14 inches, not to mention its accurate in my testing easily manageable, and reliable. Cylinder dumps at 7 yards I can hit everything in a 10-inch target. Kinda the opposite of what I thought I would run, but I like having a free hand to fight. Multiple deadly wounds per trigger pull are unique in a handgun. It's essentially a firing squad of 32 auto rounds per shot. The judge gets hate, but 99% of the people I talk to have never run federal handgun shells. Those are the only ones that make the platform viable, but its VERY viable in that case. Lehigh makes a special round to that creates a 2 inch wide wound cavity and it only works in the judge because of the long cylinder gave the engineers more room to add super long pedals.

I'd be more concerned about over-penetration with a rifle (I assume you mean an AR, not a Ruger 10/22) than with a shotgun, because with a shotgun the pellets will be travelling at a much lower velocity.

Shotguns (contrary to Biden's recommendation) isn't good for home defense unless you've got a lotvof training with it, know what and when you're shooting and are accountable, etc., etc. like the man says. That said... That's why I like my M3 convertible, best of both worlds. ;) Speed with semi-auto and function with light/non lethal loads and malfunctions. I know people who use 870s because "That's what the military has" and want to stay consistent but, their preference and mine would be the Mossberg 590a1. Not many M3s around and expensive when there are but the function and reliability of the 590 is superior and they even passed the military torture test. Configurable however you need, great stuff. 👍
