Ever shot a grenade launcher? In this video, retired Navy SEAL Mark "Coch" Cochiolo changes gears and talks about grenade launchers.
Get some insight into the different kinds of grenade launchers and their use.
Coch has over 30 years of Naval Special Warfare experience ranging from Special Warfare Operator, Operational Tester, Combat developer, Officer In Charge, Training Officer and Weapons Instructor.
Coch has four operations SEAL tours of duty to the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) under his belt and has spent eight years as an assaulter and breacher on the US Navy’s tier-one counter-terrorist unit (i.e. SEAL Team 6) making operational and combat deployments to hotspots in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

A knife video would be nice. What knives did you carry? What knives are just too Hollywood movie? Seems like *every knife manufacturer* and their mother claims to manufacture a knife that SEAL's use haha. So it would be nice to break down what was carried in reality & what is just marketing/Hollywood knife hype. Thanks for all the informative, Honest & Raw content !!

And then back to piston actually lol, haven't you seen that Sig got the contract for both the army/marine pistol and the MCX Spear to replace/supplement the M4's and such as the main fighting rifle of the us (or M5 I think, in military parlance)?

They’re using the Geissele URGI. Noveske is a more accessible civilian version (not that one can’t buy Geissele but most their stuff goes directly to SEALs so they’re always sold out). I put a URGI clone together during lockdown, only reason I know what they’re using

There was a time I could hit you in the nether region at 250 with a 40mm. I loved the 203. I'm still in awe that it isn't mounted to every service rifle. The ability to signal and conceal movement alone makes it way more of an asset than a liability. Being a grenadier for an 11B is like your first level of trust in the fireteam. You're not the team pack mule, and you're not having to carry the weapon everyone knows will break (SAW). So being given a 203 is like your first step toward leadership.

My love for the 203 began when I was a kid when I first saw Arnold carrying one in the movie Predator. I told myself, that when I joined the military, that was the gun I wanted to have. Well fast forward a couple of decades, and I finally got issued one. I carried a 203 for almost 10yrs straight, either mounted on a M16 or M4 platform in all of my deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. The only issue I noticed was the lack of training increased over time. Less and less 40mm range time created an environment where 203 gunners were not as proficient and not well versed in its uses. Since I carried it and shot so many rounds, it took sometime for me to transition to a rifle that did not have a 203 on it. I had to retrain myself. It didn’t take long, but it felt like I cheating on my wife. As far as arming distances, I thought it was 5m for HE rounds and 15m for HEDP. We shot a lot of short range shots in Iraq and some in Afghanistan. Great for opening doors. I was never a fan of HEDP. I always made sure to carry HE after my first deployment, and of course some smoke and some pyro for night time use. Used the smoke to mark targets for gunners and aircraft, and pyro for marking friendly positions or to just light up the night sky. HE seemed like it had more boom to I t than HEDP, and HEDP had a tendency not to go off after hitting glass windows. It would go through the glass and not go off. For me, shooting the 203 was like throwing a football. Never used sights and never had the quad mounted, but kept the leaf on for the first 2 deployments to Iraq, because it was required by unit SOP, but took it off for the last 2 deployments to Afghanistan, because I just didn’t care, didn’t have any more room for it, and I never used it. Accuracy was never an issue for me, but I had fired hundreds if not thousands of 40mm rounds during that 10 year span both in training and combat. Never was a fan of the 320 though, and quite honestly, don’t understand the need for it in a conventional unit. I think the M32 would be a better option, and the 6 inch rounds, especially the “smart” rounds, have not come into fruition. But overall, I loved shooting 40mm. My philosophy when I carried one was “why shoot 5.56mm, when you have 40mm,” was my thought process. Thanks for the videos and sharing your thoughts and experiences. They’re insightful and I really enjoy them. Please take care and stay safe.

That’s dope man. Funny enough, I got into guns right after my dad showed me Predator when I was like 4 years old. The M16/m203 with the heat shield combo is in my opinion the best looking gun of all time and it was the “hero gun” in every Hollywood movie if you grew up during the 80s or 90s. I even made a replica with a 37mm flare launcher when I bought my first ever AR. I personally was never a grenadier in the Marines, but it’s absolutely right what you’re saying. 40mm training In the Military is definitely not taken serious (at least from my experience). The most we ever did was hit the 203 range once per work up and even then, it was only the grenadiers that would go. I was fortunate enough to get switched squads on my first deployment and we had just gotten a new squad leader that was an old school Iraq vet. We had a conex full of ammo and we got busy training on our of time. He taught us how to “skip” 40mm rounds and how to use it as a in-direct weapon using the paper and pencil method. Besides that, 40mm was definitely my favorite thing to shoot in the Marines and is my all time favorite weapon system. Something about the recoil, and seeing that slow fat round travel in the air. Never met a grunt that actually used the sights, thing is like throwing a football. Once you use it a few times, it’s all based on feel.

My experience with an M203 is limited to one time on a range in the early 90's where I got to shoot it to my heart's content. I tried every sighting methodology available and never hit any anything. Very disappointing. Fast forward 12 years, I was in Iraq, and I was given one to take on a patrol we conducted in the Al Anbar Province. I never got to fire it there. Still, I'm a believer that in the right hands, it is a very effective weapon system.

Thanks Coch, when I was wearing green I was a medic so I was only allowed sharp things like needles. But spent many hours on live fire ranges covering all manner of things that go bang, but my favourite was the M79, as there was always time at the end to expend the extra ordnance. Happy days, 😁 Just a thought, you asked what else would we like to hear about, well my question is foot wear aka boots, what were you guys issued and did you stick to the issued stuff. When I started wearing green we were issued AB boots [ankle boots] & canvas gaiters. We got issued the GP [general purpose] boot not long after I joined but only wore them on special occasions. Love your vid's, cheers

I’d figured out how to use the front sight & the top hole in the flash hider to get rounds on target. The Knights Armament QD mounts were nice, the stand alone stock was dead weight. I’d still prefer an M-79 if I was in a static position for its accuracy.

I was a TPT (Tactical Psyop Team) Specialist and not sure why but was designated the M203, along with the M240 in the turret if the Loud speaker wasn't equipped. Once again, never understood why, If we used our weapons we failed at our mission. Anyways, I was at the range training with the M203 and an E5 missed his target as we were just learning. We hadnt even qualified yet. we see a ground squirrel hopping around. We started laughing as it was within percussionary range I would assume. The Range master was an E7 and had a O4 with him. Well, an investigation took place for over 2 weeks. Total B.S. The E5 was being investigated as if he was trying to kill a wild animal and aimed at it which he indeed did not.

As complete non-military: interesting. Surprised to see such 'wimpy' grenade launcher designs; I'd image with such light weight, the recoil of launching a 40mm grenade must be intense; not something to forego properly bracing against you in the heat of the moment.
