Should you buy the Apple Vision Pro as a programmer? There is a ton of use cases for this new headset and they mostly stem around all things graphics... however what about us coders?
In todays video I go over my setup, thoughts and determine if the Apple Vision Pro will work for programmers.

I’m a developer and I use the Apple Vision Pro for programming. I absolutely love it! Playing the movie Dune while in the desert on a giant screen and mirroring my Mac is amazing. What really pulls this together is sitting in my movie theater chair and typing on the laptop. I don’t like using the wireless keyboard and trackpad. Previously I used a 55” Odyssey Ark and a 65” Oled Sony, and two more 45” ultra wide monitors on standby. FYI, you can reset all of your windows, when one is lost, by holding the Digital Crown button down.

Great tip on resetting the apps! I didn't know that one. I agree coding in this setup is quite a bit more fun than I imagined. Once we can have multiple macs connected its going to be next level. Or ability to drag from VisionOS to MacOS universally.

This is exactly the video review I was looking for as a full stack dev myself. My use case is pretty much like yours: VS Code front and center, Git or some build pipeline web site, and coms SW like Slack, etc. I could see supplemental open windows like a terminal, project mgmt web page, debug web window in a browser (this seems very possible if your Vision Pro can see your local network). I doubt the Vision Pro has a terminal app though so that might be held captive by the Mac Book or a VS Code terminal window. Thankfully many apps these days are web based and i'm guessing you can fire up as many browsers as you'd like. Follow up video on how things progress or pro tips you learn would be awesome. Thanks.
@CoderMan
@CoderMan 5 ай бұрын
Awesome. I'll be sure to provide follow up videos, and you could use a shell iPad app though they aren't usually super helpful. I'm waiting for Apple to update the VisionOS to allow Mac apps to float outside of a single view.

What size is your light seal? My initial one was 33w which made my face hurt because it was too big for my face and reduced my field of view. Changed to 21W and it’s made a huge difference. Getting the fitting at the store was something I should have done initially.
@CoderMan

100% agree on getting fitted. My initial one was 25W because of the lenses, I just swapped to a 21W+ (thicker face pad) last night and my initial findings is how much better it fits/looks!

How is the text resolution? Is it blurry or do you have to increase zoom in your editor?
@CoderMan
@CoderMan 6 ай бұрын
I had to increase the text size a bit (not much). The screen recording is limiting to 1080p so it's really showing so much worse than it does in your own VP view.

What i like about my 5k studio display is the ability to arrange my IDE to show me even 8 source code files in the bottom row of the display, the top row is usually filled with browser and other stuff. Im sitting pretty much close thou. My question is, could i do the same thing with AVP and see everything sharp and clear? (especially the code)
@CoderMan
@CoderMan 5 ай бұрын
The layout would be possible but it's just a mirror of your Mac display, however I don't believe it works with non laptop Macs at the moment. You'd set up your window arrangement and then display that into the AVP. Hopefully in the future we'll be able to use Mac apps outside of the constraints of a display.
@alexandrelara7161
@alexandrelara7161 5 ай бұрын
I think you need to recalibrate the displays, because they are leaving very visible marks on your nose. Apple says that if the internal lens are touching your nose, you can adjust them to avoid discomfort. If you go to Settings > Eyes & Hands > Realign Displays, you can press and hold the top button (to the left) to move the lens outwards, which can significantly relieve the pressure on your nose. Just make sure you can read the instructions well when you do this, and if you can still read even with the lenses as far apart as possible, you're good to go. Hope it helps!

The screen recordings show about a 1080p but in real usage its more detailed. I did increase my font size in Xcode to improve readability. I am hoping for some ability to change the resolution, in future updates.

you mentioned that the focus can be a problem for power users/coders. Is that because it causes eye strain more quickly than you'd experience from regular monitors due to the foveated rendering not keeping up with your eye movements 100%?
@CoderMan
@CoderMan 5 ай бұрын
That is a huge aspect because coder do tend to move around a bunch, especially debugging and testing. The other aspect is because a headset causes more eye strain than a monitor regardless.

Good overview! You may want to mention that the VP can only pair with Apple Silcon M-series macbooks. If you have a intel macbook pro (me), it's not supported (lame, its probably just a compiler switch). That is just Apple requiring you to be all-in on the *latest* devices for integration, a sales squeeze-play business choice. Also, a 'not quite mature' element is that you can only have one macbook window open at a time. This will probably be corrected in the near future. Face pressure of the VP device over long periods of time was the deal breaker for me. I code all day, The first iteration of the VP device is too much weight on my face to do all day work.

This isn’t true. The Intel Macs just need to be running the latest version of Sonoma. I have one and an Intel iMac and they worked after the OS upgrade with no issue. In cases where you don’t see the connect button, you use the control center in AVP to connect to your Mac.

Will never be better than actual monitors ever as long as 2D floating windows is all its offering. The only way it can become better than monitors is if applications in the future start having actual 3D interfaces that simulate real objects you can interact with. That would be a gamechanger if audio and video professionals for example can have virtual equipment with knobs they can turn and stuff in AR, simulating thousands of dollars worth of hardware you don't have... that would be cool, simulating a monitor, not so much.
@CoderMan

100% agree and man would a DAW or video editing deck in a virtual space be amazing. I liken this to a preview of whats possible, but for full on development I still need more workstation setup. The KZfaqrs saying they swapped 100% to VR/AR for development are either lying or not doing enough work in a session to matter.
