Thanks for spending the money so that the rest of us don't have to! I really hope Apple will take advice, like those given in this video, to heart and improve the product. I can definitely see myself considering the product (even at that price) if all the mentioned issues are addressed. Great video!

Hopefully in they can quickly add multi screens for the Mac. Ideally I would love a screen that filled 120 to 180 degrees of Vision Pro , like 16000 x 6000 pixel screen. I run modelling apps and physical screen size has always been an issue, my 5k2k ultra wide isn’t big enough.

I bought a quest 2 primarily to play games on it. After having some neck pain issues from looking down at my screen I decided to use my Quest 2 as a monitor and its been amazing. If i could afford a vision pro id definitely get it specifically for productivity as i can have my "monitor" anywhere at any time.

Oooh thank you for the informative review. I love writing code on a wall, with a projector (no windows though;), and I was wondering if this device could improve on that, and it looks like a strong “maybe almost.” I think I’ll let this shake out and mature a bit for now. Thank you for the review!

Most documentation is available on the web. You can open multiple browser windows along with the virtual laptop screen. There’s a long delay when compiling and loading even a very simple visionOS app, so iteration can be a pain.

The impression I have gotten from the reviews is that the Vision Pro is a super iPad, as you say. Just like the iPad it has a few code editors and even a git client. It can do zoom and slack. But, until it can open a shell window it can only supplement. For those that run their code in the cloud, it might be a primary device. It needs a top notch IDE though. It might be fun to port Zed to it.

I’m pretty sure you can use many coding platforms through many browser windows that is the equivalent of having multiple monitors. You can also have your mail app open as a window. You can have up to 5 desktops on your Mac and switch between those desktops with a three finger swipe, so that’s also equivalent to having multiple monitors to an extent. Also, with a 70+ inch screen, you can fit many more windows on one desktop than usual and be able to interact with them well

I’m just trying to help you get your money’s worth to help use the AVP to its full potential. The main thing is that the AVP has better hardware than any other virtual reality device by far. That means it has much more potential than the meta quest and other headsets, we’ll have to wait for developers to make more native apps to fully realize it. You could be one of them, good luck! 😃

Awesome video but I’ve noticed a common issue with all devs reviewing the AVP. You lot need to change the mentality around the device. All the research, sites, books references and diagrams should be opened from the AVP side. Only your main tool should be on the Mac, in my case Xcode. Slack, Prompt and Figma are always pinned into somewhere inside my headset and when jumping into meetings, I’m happy enough to be able to use Freeform as the whiteboard. The personas are only weird on the beginning and they’re great to carry small emotions across the call. Again, awesome video and it’s a shame that it didn’t work for you. My advice is to look at videos of people migrating their flow to the iPad.

I like the CTA button -- click to get poor. What I would like for Apple Vision Pro is for Apple to eventually get rid of it -- with a far superior technology where they can create some invisible screen/filter that you can summon on any wall -- perhaps beamed from the Vision Pro or a projector -- similar to what was in The Minority Report. But I did try it -- and am impressed with the 3D immersive experience. Question, though: How does one even develop an app for it? I hope you can tackle this next video.

Finally, a fair/balanced review pointing out the drawbacks of Vision Pro. So many people go googoo gaagaa because it is an Apple product but in the end, if it is not increasing productivity and offer something that nothing can do (disruptor), it is just a cool gadget - that's it. Every other product - MacBook, iPad, iPhone, iPod, iwatch filled a void immediately after launch. IMO, Vision Pro does not.

As a software dev this confused me... you are obviously able to render your code editor on a unique screen in the vision space. Is it the case that the IDE itself is not resident on the visor so compiling really can't be done or is it that you're mirroring the mac to the visor?
@EngineeringwithUtsav
@EngineeringwithUtsav 4 ай бұрын
Just mirroring your Mac screen. You cannot tap into the Vision Pro for any compiling at all… unless they release apps (say a native ide) in the future that can actually do that.

The one thing I need for the purchase to be justified is the ability to just carry the Vision Pro as well as my keyboard and mouse and that’s it. I should be able to put on the headset, take out my keyboard and mouse, and be able to open 2-3 displays. 1 for my coding IDE or something like Vim. 2. For safari/chrome to use as a reference, and then something for tracking my time or a to-do checklist. Now the real question is, how would I then get the code out there to the world? Aside from Git… what if I want to just export an .py or .exe file for my client to use? What if I want a database of all my old coding projects easily accessible from a folder? Seems to me Apple thought of every cool gimmick out there but not of what people would actually use this thing for. What I’m trying to say is that it’s cool, but it’s not a productivity machine. The fact that you have to bring your MacBook just to have an desktop environment is silly. That’s just my 2 cents. As such, I’ll be waiting until v2 where hopefully it’s a bit more developer friendly.

It's completely unacceptable that you can't run xCode directtly on the Vision Pro, or any macApp. How can it be a "spacial computer," when you can't even run development software on it? Part of the excitement of this was being able to develop on multiple virtual screens and get rid of my desktop. Guess I'll have to wait for when they decide to stop handicapping it like they do the ipad.

I would still stick to my long standing rule about Apple products: go for the second and later generations only. The only time I broke the rule with my MacBook Pro 16” 2021 has penalized me from connecting to a 5120x1440 display without support for native resolution. Any M2-based Mac is free from this issue.😢

I agree with everything you said about the Apple Vision Pro. I was hoping they’d make it a device people could do actual software engineering work on as a stand alone computer but instead Apple decided to give engineers a gimped experience and it now costs $7k entry fee to do software development for and with the Apple Vision Pro. Engineers are the most likely user base for the AVP but Apple decided this productivity device is not for engineers. They need to give us terminal access even if its sandboxed and allow XCode to run on the Apple Vision Pro.

With enough adoption and how efficient the M chips are, I think that will come after a few iterations where they may have something like Vision Air, Vision Pro and Vision Max … and allow the Max to be more for the dev scenarios. Well, that’s at least the hope :)

You described exactly how I feel about this product. It is great technology, but not worth the costs. I have been using Quest and xreal when I travel for years. Both of them support three (or 5 with immersedVR on Quest) virtual monitors. That is a huge miss for Apple. I am sure they will add it, but even more important is lowering the price. Once the initial purchase passes (those that are willing to buy any and everything that Apple sells), I can't imagine this ever reaching critical purchase levels to support its continued development. I just don't think that many people will shell out 3500.00 for this product. As beautiful as it looks, it just doesn't bring enough to justify 7x the cost of a Quest while delivering less possibility (currently).
@EngineeringwithUtsav
@EngineeringwithUtsav 3 ай бұрын
I couldn’t agree more. Cheaper versions will come for sure (depending on adoption signals from this one). This (the expensive) one end up becoming to the max or the ultra that allows serious workflows, perhaps even an OS version close to the MacOS.

Apple's vision involves incorporating features that have already been introduced in other devices such as Magic Leap and Meta Quest. However, Apple's entry into the market is tardy and may not have longevity due to the high price point. While Apple's debut may have made a significant impact, it may be short-lived as compared to Meta Quest, which is available at a more reasonable price point of $399, making it a more viable option for consumers.

Thanks for giving this a thorough review as a software engineer, Utsav. Not because of you, but the AVP seems like it really doesn't provide anything revolutionary or dramatic for software engineers at this time. Not allowing multiple screens for a single OS or having Remote Desktop + macOS running is a major letdown and unless app developers really make their apps 1st class citizens for the AVP....I just don't see the productivity gains for software engineers. Most of what you mentioned can be accomplished with a phone or a tablet alongside of your laptop without much of a dropoff. Maybe v2 or v3 will be dramatic enough. But doesn't seem like it's there yet.

As a software engineer myself, for the price of the Apple Vision Pro you could buy 2 ThinkVision 49 inch Ultra-Wide Monitor - P49w-30 have have everything you need open in one monitor. Or just spend around $120 on a used Quest. Or buy 6 Quest 3 in witch does more. Amazing how Apple is scamming so many people on this old technology. Other VR goggle that are support light are also available. The UX of Apple Vision is a horrible implementation by using the eyes to trigger things, it will be to a point that your eye balls will pop out. The Quest 3 is just amazing and it does more. Apple needs to stop using the eyes to activate things, it must track hands and less use the eyes. When designing things, you always will be looking around the screen, and you CAN NOT allow the eyes to trigger things that may end up closing, skiping, opening, etc behind the scenes. Also, the POV of the Apple Vision Pro is less than the Quest 2 and Quest 3. Resolution is not enough is the POV is less than a $120 goggle that does 90% or more than the Apple Vision Pre does.

I don’t understand the problem with the Mac screen. Instead of a 27” display make it 40 inside the Vision Pro. You can absolutely do your coding. You can still open MULTIPLE windows on the Mac screen AND use other apps like Safari, Office…Vision Pro apps as well.

The resolution is proportionly related to the size of virtual desktop. Text will be granier for bigger screen. Also, you don’t want to tilt your head up or down too much. That means the virtual display has ‘virtual size limit’ for comfort level. And with this ‘virtual size limit’, the amount of apps you can open and display simultaneously is also limited. You can check out Alex’s video on different screensize/resolution will look like in Vision Pro (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/arFod92G3cjWcWg.htmlsi=ydibbf1S3ep5nQn7)

@@ericy91745 I don’t think the Vision Pro 4k screen’s resolution gets grainier with larger windows. Apple doesn’t mention that at all: “If you have a Mac with Apple silicon, it can appear in Apple Vision Pro at resolutions up to 4K. If your Mac has an Intel processor, it can appear at resolutions up to 3K.” I think the MacBook display has a higher resolution than the Vision Pro.

@@sharonb.9128 Assuming you are using half the screen real estate in Vision Pro, you cannot display full 4K resolution in that 'half size'. You'll need 8K display to achieve the fidelity. Good analogy is if you have 4 gallons container. You cannot squeeze two 4 gals in left and right. You have to either increase to 8 gallons container, or reduce the inner containers to 2 + 2. Anyways, watch Alex's video and he will show you the resolution limitations in Vision Pro

My point was larger screen sizes were not blurry or “grainy” like old 480p tv shows. Reviewers walked outside and created huge perfectly legible windows, crystal clear. The print/image is either tiny or huge but always sharp. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l9OXqNFlnt3XlKc.htmlsi=raXwKp2B-qXO30WH

such headsets are generally uncomfortable while wearing, otherwise software engineers would not be needing multiple screen after using vision pro

Why the heck should anyone type any texts in VR including code ? What's the point of VR usage for flat sheet of text ? Or you have some kind of 3D spatial IDE/software for coding in 3D we never heard about before ? Vision Pro is for _creating_ future spatial software to be used on upcoming lightweight AR glasses. If you got your VisionPro and you try to work on it, it's EXACTLY like getting CNC for car building and trying to drive on CNC itself instead of future car you could build with it. When Apple told you about "working" in Vision Pro - it's ALWAYS only about communication and discussion with others about something already MADE before the meeting started. We just got Vision Pro and whole software/hardware ecosystem. And NOW we might start to build software for this new reality. To be used IN FUTURE when all this software will be DONE AND READY to behave in VR and use its advantage. (including IDEs and coding tools). If you continue to think in flat screen paradigm but now these screens are just floating all around in space for some reason - you're lost the whole point of AR/VR and it's a great moment to return your VisionPro because you don't need it. Go buy additional monitor(s) instead. You'll have the same result.

It's actually not high resolution, and it lags. It's just an airplay screencast. Something like you might do with to your TV with appleTV. It's a pretty low quality experience. (Making the charging cable a lightening cable could have made it so much better.)
