So you want to ski some big backcountry lines... So much of the process to climbing and skiing big mountain objectives is predicated on the research and planning that takes places in the weeks and days leading up to your adventure. This episode explains some of that process and shows how trip planning can be the difference between success and failure in the mountains while going out to attempt to ski an Idahoan classic line, the north face of Devil's Bedstead.
This is line 34 of 50 of The FIFTY completed by Cody Townsend. The FIFTY is a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains along with the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

I’ve said this before, I really appreciate what you put in your vids. Your respect for the mountains, your planning, and your lack of hype. This was particularly good with the discussion of how to prepare, something everyone should do however well you know your local lines. And the comic relief at the end? Yes yes!

I get the idea that nothing can replace experience but to suggest that you need to have "decades of experience" and a personal mentor in order to go into the backcountry is a bit of an exaggeration. The "do plenty of research including the avalanche forecast" bit is fully legit and can't be stressed enough. Being mentally prepared to back out of a mission is a really hard one and equally important. I actually thought this vid was going to show you guys backing out after conditions got sketch, that would have been a great way to show the reality of safe travelling in the backcountry! (Not saying it was too sketch to continue in this case)

Preemptively piling on a bit... (Having answered this a bunch myself.) (1) The best camera is always the one you have with you (and is ready to use when you need it). (2) Camera Brand / Make, Model, Type, etc. are all often rather individual choices. Don't use something specific just because somebody you admire uses it. Use it if there is a match of feelings, motivations, and technical details...and if hearing from somebody else how they select kit is helpful then that's ok. Just don't expect anyone else to be able to tell you what will work for you. (3) The questions asked by the OP in this thread are in general the right starting point. If you want to learn more, but don't know where to start, copy those down and refer to them while watching Bjarne's brain dump a forth or fifth time. For myself the most important piece of kit that isn't obvious ahead of time has been a Quick Release camera clip system that I attach to my backpack strap and / or climbing harness. See item #1 above. In my case that's Peak Design's Capture (plus a drop-prevention leash for rope work), but many other people use the BlackRapid system and similar harnesses.

You don't have to worry about me. After viewing this, I will not say "Cody told me to go out and do this!" The reason I don't backcountry ski is that you can't visit the bar at lunch time. We tried to ski the bedstead 3 years ago. With 12 other people on the line above and below, it was extremely spooky that day. One person triggered a wet slab we could see as we were on the ridge about were you thought it was spooky. These lines are dangerous and people don't realize that other people can be an avalanche trigger themselves. We turned around shortly after we saw that wet slab. Crazy how many folks we saw going for it though.

Although I dont have all the info to work with, I'm always very leery and hesitant around thick-to-thin snowpack changes. Your decision point with the hollow (windslab?) layer, and to stick close to the rocks is a tough one, especially on that big of an open slope. My initial thought was, to be frank, that I didnt agree. But again, I'll concede I'm working with very minimal information. Great episode, but for new ski tourers the caveat remains; there is always a lot more to unpack about decision making in the back country than what can be gained in a single video.

My buddy told me that he likes to use a 99% safety rule when skiing. If he does 99% of the stuff right, he should be ok. I pointed out that he would die one out of one hundred times skiing with that logic. He was a bit stunned when he did the (quick) math, and acknowledged the fault in that way of thinking. I like your 100 to 1 rule better. 100 yes's vs 1 no, and the no wins. You are my beacon for good decision making in the mountains Cody. Thank you, and keep, keep on trucking.

Nah, he's good (if he's right, anyway). It's not like the next time you go out your chances are now 1:98, then 1:97, then 1:96, 1:95...1:1 you die. Every time you go it's 1:99. There IS always that 1, tho.
