Hey guys, just a quick coffee chat about why I choose this lifestyle, and how we have made a good life for ourselves. These are just my experiences, and my opinion only. Thanks for watching, and God bless.

You are a true Man not many men would take the time to care for a sick spouse. You and men like you are truly the definition of a man. I hope many young men will learn from videos of how real men should be. There are not a lot of men like you and my hubby out there.

I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes as I watch this video. I am 66 years old and I too have a sick wife and I have had some medical issues myself that limit what I can do. Recently I have had a perpetual pitty party as I look at our situation and wonder if we even have future. You have given me the ability to look beyond the problems and start from where we are to build a future. There aren't enough words to thank you for this video. May God richly bless you.

I just wanted to tell you that my wife and I watch all your videos, and every time you start your video and you raise both your arms in the air we raise ours at the same time. I was wondering if there is a couple thousand other people doing the same thing at that precise moment. How cool is that? Keep doing what you do brother, you are loved. Red and Patsy

My daughter and I have gotten by on $600 a month for several years now and we pay rent. Our neighbors don't know how we do it. I agree with you. Folks often confuse WANTS with NEEDS. Our one big luxury is internet. However it is our only source of entertainment, and it comes with our only phone so for the cost I feel it is worth it. Hat off to you for standing by your wife. TY for posting.

Autumnprepper TY Autumn. Many folks don't understand our simplistic lifestyle. You should see the look on peoples faces when I tell them that we don't have a cell phone or cable T.V.. Blows their mind. They act like we are deprived or something. LOL! Funny. We don't feel deprived. We look at them all stressed out and drowning in debt and we feel blessed. :-)

You touched my heart so much with the story of your wife. I had a massive stroke 6 years ago at the age of 49 and it was the kind you either die from or left a vegetable but the Good Lord decided something different for me and I lived with very few noticeable side affects. I live in a hollar in the Appalachian mountains of KY and when I moved here my goal was to live as you do. My husband is a truck driver and he's gone a lot but he to was my guard dog through my worst days and stayed by my side through it all. Now that I'm better I have been able to plant a garden ( started small ) and last year planted 2 gardens and maintained them myself plus canned. I raise a small group of chickens and this year I plan to expand that also. I'm so glad I found your your KZfaq site and looking forward to seeing the rest of your videos.

If the soil is 6 feet or deeper geothermal venting keeps a building aird at the mean annual temp to warm in winter & cool in summer. Planting shrubs around the house also acts as insulators. Connect a greenhouse to the main house helps to heat and cool.

John, your greeting in your videos is perfect! It gives a "welcome to my porch, sit a stay a while" feeling to your videos! One of the better moments in my day is when I see you uploaded a video. I grab a cup of coffee and sit a spell with you. You are one of the supermen of our society because of the devotion you have toward your wife and children, the love you put into making your home safe and comfortable for them. That old saying, For me and my house, we serve the Lord fits. God bless and until next time....

You are my inspiration John. I've followed your channel but don't always listen to the coffee chats...wow I'm glad I did on this one. I knew I liked you from video one on bunnies...and your fishing videos because I loved my brother so much who loved fishin & chattin. But the fact that you got started as a homesteader to nurse your wife & raise your family...wow. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself & the how-tos on your videos are great. I wanna come and buy some bunnies from you :) I saw that interview with the old timer who lived deep in the hills and told what he did for a living..."I live". lol - you sell what you can, you use your muscles when you can, you plant, you hunt, you forage, you pray and...you live.

I know this comment is 7 years late, but thank you for posting videos and being so open in this one. This video sums up basically everything my dad taught me on our farm growing up. My dad has to take care of my mom too though my mom is not entirely handicapped she has her health issues. I have great respect for men - real men, selfless like how God intended them to be - who are willing to take care of the families God gave them. I'm away at college now, but I have a dream of starting a homestead or just adding on to my grandparents farm. Your videos fuel that dream! I'm so glad there are more people out there like my dad. Thanks again! I'll be praying for you and yours!

I just found you and this is the first video of yours I watched, but it will not be the last. I turned 35 yesterday, and this year has been full of important changes in my life. For a couple years now I've been thinking about homesteading, but now my wife and I are starting to make plans for it. I like your way of thinking. Funny, when you mentioned "what do you do for a living," I answered outloud: "I (want to) live for a living" before you said it. Thanks for this video!!! Greetings from Croatia.

I have to say John that the life you chose most would not have traveled. I worked in a nursing home back in my 20's and seen families put their loved ones in there and would visit them often at first....then the visits got to where they where only once a month, then holidays till no visits at all. Really heartbreaking to watch! I said then I would never put my family in a nursing home, can't do it! I have taken care of my dad for 14 years and 9 years by myself since my husband passed. It has not been easy by no means, but you do what you have to do to make it. It's a mindset I guess is what I am trying to say John....guess some of us are wired different than others. I have been called a fixer before, guess I want to fix everything, lol! Thanks for sharing John and God Bless you and your family, xxxx

I think you should write a book! I'm serious. You should document your life every step of the way. You are an inspiration to so many people and having it all in print would not only be a wonderful resource for others, but what an amazing walk through history for your children and generations to come! That would be a wonderful legacy to leave! And, by the way, I would buy a copy! God Bless from a fellow Buckeye!

Very well said, I had to become a vegetarian, that is what I called it, when I didn't have enough money to buy food. I could afford a jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread but that was it. I remember those days, I now can, grown my own veggies, grind my own wheat and I have one heck of a stuffed cold room, no cable tv, no cell phone and I take any job I can from babysitting to working at a gas station to help pay for the needs.I keep a list of the wants and have quite a chuckle over some of them but I have found that if you keep an open mind you may just find those wants at the local dump (yes, we can dump pick) or friends may be trying to get rid of an item that you wanted. Keep up the great videos.

You have giving me so much inspiration to focus on living life, and enjoying life its self...Me and my wife have both worked "successful" jobs but its never fulfilling no matter how much you make. I now stay at home with my 2yr old son and my wife works..just the way things worked out..but we are on the path to living life, getting dept free, leaving the big city, buying land, and living on the land, and most important of it all focusing on the family. I just wanted to say thanks for your videos...hopefully one day i'll be doing my own starting from the beginning of our family's new life. Just keep it up, and god bless you, brother....This was always a dream for me, but you showed me it can be a reality.

When I developed MS, my hubby decided that working for a large engineering firm that sent him all over the country might not be the best way for him to take care of me. I didn't ask, I didn't even suggest such a thing, he just came home one day and said that he wanted to buy property in Colorado and get me out of the south with its shitty doctors and shittier weather. We started selling our properties in southern states and are in the process of getting a farm started, a farm for organic, heirloom apples. I am pretty sure that it will not be off grid, well not completely but since he is brilliant at what we call redneck engineering besides the real engineering I am sure he can make anything work. We are lucky in that we have plenty to start with, not so lucky that the life I knew was gone in an instant but I am very grateful that I have a husband who is not a jerk and would run off the minute I got sick. Too many times we hear those stories in the newspapers of wealthy, famous men bugging out on their sick wives.

your care for your wife, to stay by her side during the toughest part of a persons life, to teach your children its important to stay by your spouse for better or worse is not only honorable but something most people just don't understand. things get tough they just get divorce instead of honoring each other by taking care of them..... You my friend are a honorable true man among many who are just a man by the chromosomes. My grandfather after a heart attack spent 60 days in icu said during that time he saw the light and a voice saying "i sense a hesitation", grandpa told the voice "yes, my wife has been sick and I need to take care of her". he later came out of icu and spent the next 3 yrs taking care of her. She died but 4 weeks to the day he died. The lord allowed him to honor his commitment to his wife. So your story brought wonderful memories of my grandparents. thank you for sharing. . you are THE MAN.

Glad to find you're videos. We have been homesteading for over 20 yrs and we're still learning! It's refreshing to come across someone so humble, it seems so many today are into trying to out do one another, or the ole' one upsmanship . We too believe as you, it takes time but it's so worth it to be free. We're cutting back on our electrical use, by as you said switching to LED, heating with wood, insulating, replacing windows in our 1910 farm house. The beginning of our journey was our daughter's neurologic disease and brain tumors. You nailed it, looking forward to more coffee moments and videos :)

Okay I've been all over the place - youtube, kindle, books, internet - and you're the first "homesteader" that I've seen that I simply adore. I'd give just about anything to pick your brain for information and tips and your experiences and what worked/didn't work what you eat and how you eat it. So happy your wife has someone who loves her as much as you do and I'm sure it goes both ways. Plus - in more ways than that - you're setting fabulous examples for those kids. Way to go my friend.
