We explored the working principle of Archimedes screw. Let us look at The coil pump which was built as an alternative to the Archimedean screw. This pump allows the lifting of water over a small height.
Let us build a coil pump with PVC Pipe and plastic tubing to understand its working.
4 meters of plastic tube is wrapped around the PVC pipe.
Let us add some ink and soap solution to the water. This will enable us to see how water moves inside the pipe as we rotate it.
As I rotate the pipe once, water enters in the first section. As water tends to be at the lowest level, it moves forward one turn each rotation. This movement continues till it reaches the other end. We can dip the tube halfway and see how the second part moves up as well.
If you dont have long plastic tube, You can use bend straws and square shaped bottle as well to build a similar arrangement.
Understand more about coil pump with these variations.
Instead of wrapping it around the pipe, you can attach a plastic tube on a circular PVC sheet and form a spiral. When the sheet is rotated, water travels all the way up to the center and comes out.
Instead of my hand rotating the wheel, flowing water or wind power can be used to rotate this wheel and we can build a pump which does not need electricity !
Just like a coil pump, water can be lifted over a small height.
With the help of an O ring, you can attach another pipe here and transport water to a remote place.
Thank You.
