And when Ellen sent her to help declutter one of her staff office. That was painful to watch. The office was fully packed, but not to the point of disorganized, and the staff clearly felt violated throughout the whole segment because he didn't ask for it.

@Nicholas Cossins (TKY 3007712) I'd disagree in your saying that "it wasn't that hard to translate," as interpretation is quite difficult (Iida Marie herself discusses that in interviews she's done)! As for what she actually did say in Japanese, 近藤麻理恵 said 「そうですね、皆さん、こう、もちろん片付けに悩んでいらっしゃるっていうこともそうだと思うんですけれども、同時にその心の中のモヤモヤ、こういったことも同時に悩んでいらっしゃることも多いと思うんですよ。」 -- The operative word we're discussing here being モヤモヤ. I would say that even a native speaker would be tempted to interpret 「心の中のモヤモヤ」 as an "uneasiness," "pent-up feelings," "inner distress," "haziness," etc., etc., as モヤモヤ is often translated. However, as we know, in the context of Stephen's question, and how often in the Netflix series it is made clear how the cleaning of the home also helps one "tidy" issues inside of them, I would say that, on the fly, on national television, it was an expertly made, highly nuanced interpretation, to say "clutter in our hearts."

That's just her TV personality... her personality is her brand/image... if she doesn't keep it up, especially in public, people lose interest... I'm sure it probably has rubbed on to her actual personality to some extent but don't believe she's like that all the time in her life... I bet she has sworn and yelled at her husband at some point.... don't believe the media stereotype that all Asian women are submissive. That's just what Japan wants you to think because they sexualize their women like that, and Americans buy into that idea.

It’s like saying I think my grandma is sweet and adorable and I trust anything she tells me to do, even if it’s going into an abandoned warehouse at midnight because I don’t feel that my grandma can lead me anywhere dangerous. Even without knowledge of shinto people can understand what she means if they *want*. Saying a grace before the meal and thanking god for the food is a similar rite in christanity for being aware what you have and that you should be grateful for the most essential things. Americans are big consumers compared to Japanese people and it might be more difficult for them to consider even thanking things for being there, serving a purpose. Regardless of the religious belief, every thing that has been made is impregnated with meaning. @@Skittl1321 ; I don't think it's the "mystique" bit because even if she became conversant in English, she would still speak it with a Japanese accent which would her stand out. She's probably just not proficient enough in English to speak to a national audience, and she doesn't want to use "broken" English because Americans, in particular, seem put off by that----unless, for instance, it's a French speaker. THEN, they think it's "charming".

@Osw719 There's actually two things going on here: 1) The interpreter kind of already knows what Marie Kondo will say. They've been working together a while now, and these interviews can be quite repetitive. 2) Speed does not equate "literal" translation. Sure, she's quick, but it doesn't mean she's saying exactly what Marie is saying. As an interpreter, she has learned to adapt and mold the person's speech. There's really no other way of doing this job. So for her to translate Marie Kondo is much easier than translating Stephen! :)

The upshot is that very good interpreters like her make a TON of money.

Basically she uses the gratitude, love and joy energy before tidying up and creating that book, that makes tidying up easier, heart become less cluttering and joyful and she becomes successful. Her energy is so good. I love how she smiles all the time and have such great attitude throughout the interview. Wow such a lovely and inspiring lady.

Japanese is a beautiful language because of the softness. They don’t have hard sounds (from what I remember of the class I failed in college).

I've heard about her show a few times since Netflix basically puts it everywhere, but I hadn't seen her or known about how she is until now. Absolutely wonderful. If this is how she is on a day-to-day basis, I might actually watch her show, and I've never had interest in house related shows before!
