Marie Kondo brings her world-renowned tidying expertise to my closet, where-let’s just say-not everything is “sparking joy.” She joins my podcast to discuss Marie’s early (and sometimes overzealous) forays into organizing and why the "KonMari Method" for cleaning up has turned into a global phenomenon. Plus, Marie explains how her young daughters have changed her approach to tidying and divulges the unnecessary object in her home that she refuses to give away. I'm doing the konmari method in my home and reading her books, one interesting change is how nice I suddenly am to others and I honestly think it's her spirit coming through the book and teaching me to be kind.

It sounds like she’s saying a lot more than what’s subtitled at times? Especially the first part where she says “discard everything.” Anyone that knows Japanese know if I’m wrong or not?
@stefaniekolk
@stefaniekolk 6 жыл бұрын
Japanese is very very wordy, and mostly the subtitles are OK. However they leave out an entire sentence at the end of the "discard everything" part. I think she's saying something like: "As paper is very thin, it's easy to fool yourself, telling yourself: 'ahh, this amount should be fine, right?' ".
@CriticsConfession
@CriticsConfession 6 жыл бұрын
That’s just how Japanese works. Sometimes long sentences in English can be said in just a few words in Japanese. Sometimes short sentences in English can take miles to say in Japanese. Just as an example, say someone is talking about going out to lunch with friends. You might ask them “Was Marie with you guys?” in English, but it can be as simple as saying “Marie wa?” in workplace-safe Japanese. Conversely, a sentence like “I was studying at that library.” in English becomes the longer and more convoluted “Ano toushoukan de benkyou-shite-imashita” in workplace-safe Japanese. Lovely language, it is.
@sighfive9677
@sighfive9677 5 жыл бұрын
You guessed right. Subtitles are almost always shorter than what is really said because reading takes time. But in this case, the translator over-did the job. What Marie really said is like this. "I mean, not literally zero(leave nothing at all), but rather, set the primary goal which is discarding everything, and then ask yourself if there is anything you want to keep. That's the important thing; to choose what you really want to keep when tidying paper materials because paper is thin therefore you tend to keep more than what you really need." Note: that Japanese is very very wordy is plain wrong.

In the KM-method, you do the things you are emotional about last. When you are on a roll, sort of. When you understand better and have learnt how to say good-bye to things and be really happy about what you do have. But the tip about saving it electronic I agree with, it helped me part with things I wanted to keep&remember but didnt in truth need to keep in its original form.
