Hi, please take into account that Jimmy's voice has developed beautifully over the last 20ish years. In his younger, Cold Chisel days, when they had finally hit success after years of pub gigs, Jimmy was an alcoholic and drinking on stage and yeah, his voice did come across as screamy in some songs, so I think this is where some of your commenters are referencing from. They have not listened to older, more bluesy, more voice controlled Jimmy, who is a long time sober and beautiful family man. He has written a book about his life which I have not yet read. He grew up here in Adelaide, in a tough, low income area called Elizabeth. Hope this helps understand the screamy comments... Hugs!! Oh, and keep in mind he is 65! He started performing in 1973.

@@chisel83 Hey! Great name! I didn't mean to come across as critical. I love Jimmy's voice, actually appreciating it even more since watching some of these reaction vids. I guess I was trying to give a condensed reason as to why some people use the screaming term, as he mentions it every time he reacts to a Jimmy song. Cheers!

Ian Moss on guitar is a great in his own way, guitar and vocals. He sings lead on part or all on quite a lot of Chisel stuff. The whole Cold Chisel band is great. Every member of the band wrote a song that was a hit record at least in Australia. The US record companies couldn’t do anything with Cold Chisel. Amazing hey?
@stevegraham3817
@stevegraham3817 2 жыл бұрын
The US Promoter asked them if they wanted a convertible Cadillac to cruise around in, them asked if they needed any coke or other substances, they said maybe later, what gigs and radio interviews have you got lined up? Promoter only had a small community country and western station booked out in the back blocks who weren't interested in rocking blues. So they basically packed up and came home. I see that trip as a wasted opportunity where they could have done a road trip and played a few dive bars, they did learn their learn their craft in the wild bars of Oz, and I reckon quite a few people would have spread the word pretty quickly over there.

I appreciated that, because Jimmy has been vilified pretty much his whole career for "screaming" but I always wondered how it could be screaming when it was so tonefilled and tuneful...so I truly appreciated you explaining tge technical part of that because I learnt how to defend him now I love how this band has matured over the years...

I grew up listening to these guys. Watched them more than once in venues with less than 500 people. Aussies grew up with this like we grew up with vegemite. It blows my mind that the rest of the world are only just catching on.

Ian Moss and Jimmy compliment each others voices so much. It's almost yin to yang. For that song to sound so aesthetically pleasing it's Mossy's low, to Jimmy's harmonies that make that song truly hauntingly beautiful. Let's also give credit to Don Walker, an absolute guru and storyteller. No one writes lyrics like him. He had the ability to truly encapsulate Australian history. I can't believe I live in the same timeline as Cold Chisel.

Also off topic, I highly suggest you watch Jimmy Barnes’ movie about his life called the working class boy. in the movie he covers a lot of his songs with his children and other Australian artists such as diesel and his band members in cold chisel. It is incredibly heartbreaking movie but so well done. He has written two Best seller books.

I remember hearing in the 90s that Jimmy got his throat checked out for damage. Turns out it was fine, 100% because he sings properly. The lubrication from all that vodka probably helped too.

This is my favourite of all Chisel songs. It was written by Steve Prestwich, who was their drummer. Sadly, he passed away in 2011. I went to a Chisel concert in Nov 2011 and they dedicated an acoustic version of this beautiful song to his memory (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rbOqZ5WKq5_Ghnk.html). The smoothness of Ian Moss' vocals with Jimmy's rawness *chefs kiss*

Every year Jimmy Barnes, and other awesome kiwi and aussie bands play at our local pub at Waihi Beach in New Zealand xmas and New years eve. I could still be at home getting ready, and in the distance you could hear this voice, very distinctive voice, was Jimmy Barnes, honestly he doesn't even need a mike. I lived a good 1.5km away from the pub, you can hear the power of his voice. We have a lot of talent here. Love that you recognize our talent.

You are spot on. I've been lucky to see and hear him live twice, once as a soloist and once with cold chisel. Absolutely blew me away. Jimmy constantly walks around the stage dropping in harmonies to whoever is singing, that sound angelic. Then punch you in the face with his rock voice. It physically pushes you back. The other singer in this song playing guitar is Ian moss. If you want to listen to another of theirs together, track down Bow River. Jimmy's is the highest most powerful controlled voice I've ever heard. His older brother has an amazing similar vocal range power and tone. Amazing genes in that Scottish family. Check out Lady What's Your Name with a band called Hindley Street Country Club, that's jimmy's older brother John Swan. By the end there'll be no doubt of their family blood lines. There's an odd recording of them singing together. But thanks for taking the time to listen to these and your reaction was exactly the same as ours the first time we ever heard them.
