1830 Napoleon Saber by coldsteel
Weight: 33.7 oz / 2.356 lbs
Blade Length: 33.75 inches
1055 carbon steel
Steel Scabbard
Point of balance ~ 6 inches from hilt
ANXII sword (??) - it's very close to the original design. Extremely close. The handle is a bit uncomfortable for someone with smaller hands though.

The writing on the sword indicates the location and date of production of the original sword model. French sabres were usually marked this way. Since this is a modern interpretation of the original, the information on the sabre is factually incorrect of course (wouldn't be a reproduction if it was made in 1813). But since the original did have this marking, Cold Steel included it for historical purposes. It says (in French, using some abbreviations for the first two words): "Manufacture Impériale du Klingenthal Octobre 1813" Which translates to: "Imperial Manufactory of Klingenthal October 1813"

Swinging swords around is a great workout. Fun quick way to get a burn going. I was just out watching the sun rise playing with my new cutlass. Loving it. Though in a real fight, I will probably always prefer a good oak or hickory staff.

Just a couple of comments, Arthur about some issues you had with the saber: First, is your sword's scabbard wood-lined, as the catalog states? I'd hate to find you got a factory defect that left this out (was this the reason for the lower price?), as it's almost a requirement for a metal scabbard--keeps the blade sharp and prevents rust. Secondly, the grip size: Most Europeans of the Napoleonic Era were around 5'5" in height, whereas men average 5'10" or larger today. I suspect that an Indian, Persian or Arab saber which are designed with smaller and tighter-fitting grips may be a better choice for you. BTW, that wide flange you see at the bottom of most cavalry saber scabbards is there to keep the tip from being damaged when off the horse, much like a "tail-dragger" fin on an early biplane. Sword harnesses were built much lower for the cavalry troops than for infantry officers and NCO's in those days. Hope this helps! ;)

I have the 1860 heavy saber. It's about 2.7lbs. I barely know anything about how to use a sword, but I can tell you it's not ideal for use on foot. Would make for a monster on a horse tho.

You handle the sword beautifully in your demo. What is that style based on? I'm not very familiar with sabre techniques.

You have a lot of sabers, I wondered if you have any straight swords. I have a windlass 1840 union nco sword, I'm gaining a lot of respect for it cutting bottles,, I've seen pretty much all of your reviews, I thought you might not have a sword like that,,, do you have one? have you considered it?? (they are easy to sharpen to a proper bevel with a file, a new round rapid removal file and about an hour and you're ready to smooth it out and put an edge on it with a flat bastard)

You’ve changed your name. I’ve been considering this sabre and your input is helpful. Thanks. You seem to have a problem with the thumb placement. For what it’s worth the top strap has a flat, aka a thumb rest, just behind the guard. That doesn’t work for you?

Hi Arthur, I am a big fan of Napoleon so this saber is one i'd like to collect. I was wondering if there are any trustworthy sites I can buy it from since it's $400 on the Cold Steel site. On another note, if there are any other fairly priced sabers you know of I would appreciate any recommendations. Thank you for your reviews!!

Very good video! Beautiful replica! I have an original one, the only thing is that it’s a 1813 not a 1830 (I know, 3 years late, and already said) To be more exact it’s à light cavalry sabre, modèle an XI (year 11 after the revolution) manufactured in Klingenthal for the blade and Versailles for the handle. Best regards, Brise-lames

Yo. You have so many sabers, it's like it's your whole thing. I'm trying to figure out which saber I want. I want a lightweight backyard cutter, that is very light so that it's challenging for bottles, but durable and sharpenable enough to cut very heavy bottles and jugs. ,,, I've never had a cold steel but you have the lineup. ,,, what say you.
@ArfooHuroo
@ArfooHuroo 3 жыл бұрын
lightest feeling one you can get for better or worse is the condor cutlass... not a fan of the handle though. My favorite saber out there is the French officer saber that I haven't done a review on, in fact I haven't done shit in the past year LOL

@@ArfooHuroo the cutlass is quite short, though, I think. I'm certainly more thinking saber length, 30+ inches. It really is starting to look to me like the mature decision is to accept it doesn't work that way, and to just go for one of the common sabers, like the 1796 lc or the cold steel tulwar, which is beefy and misses completely but fits into another category of sword I want to get sometime, which is the super beefy kind. A lightweight saber would then, in its time, show up that makes sense to me once I have more saber specific skills. (I don't do anything but cut, but the technique for sabers is unique)
@tsmspace

@@ArfooHuroo One last thing I should mention,,, I DO HAVE the Combat Commander saber machete,,, which is actually VERY MUCH the right thing,, it's light, it's perfectly sharp, it would handle every bottle you feature in your videos, including heavy gatorades and such. Also, it's dirt cheap, and super easy to sharpen up. (like a huge cheapo pocket knife). It's actually what makes me want a proper saber that's nice and light.

From all these swords you have tested which one you would suggest to us to own for a post-apocalyptic situation?
@ArfooHuroo
@ArfooHuroo 6 жыл бұрын
One that I haven't bought yet, the zombie tools d'capitan. You don't want something too long, heavy, that you can't use for other tasks. You want something tough yet you can use as a decent weapon if the situation warrants it, like if people start a fight with a machete for example or a baseball bat. What you gonna do? Pull out your Bowie knife lmao... so yeah, the cutlass machete by coldsteel is also pretty good for a Shit hits the fan scenario, but I don't know how long it will last you. The tactical katana machete is pretty nice too and so is the warsword machete, but yeah. It's also personal preference. The zombie toosl d'capitan is just what I have my eyes set on. Some people might like another type of sword for a post apocalyptic scenario, but that's just me.
@Franco-xs4gj

Usually, the zombie swords, tools don't have good material quality. How about the sword Thompson Saber from cold steel? I watched your video and I loved it from the first moment. The 1055 carbon steel is good material for sword blades. The sword is long enough, curved with a hand protection. I believe it is perfect in case of a real sword fight/war between gangs of that future time. Is that sword difficult to handle as I have never touched a sword in my life?

Why do you think 5160 steel is worse than 1055 LOL
@Franco-xs4gj
@Franco-xs4gj 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't say that!! 5160 is another good material for swords but Cold Steel does not use it. That's why I choose this material as I want to buy from Cold Steel. It depends on the country and the period of course, but if we're talking about 1830s French light cavalry just look at all the paintings and drawings of them. They only wear light thin, white gloves that go under their sleeves- very unsuited to battle. Some officers would wear slightly heavier gauntlet type gloves though. -I'm mainly thinking about hussars, but Uhlans are the same.
