Cold Steel

10 жыл бұрын

In 1917, the U.S. Navy decided to replace its Model 1860 cutlass which had been in continuous service for 57 years, with a new improved sword. Cold Steel's modern recreation of this classic fighting cutlass is as authentic as possible and it is virtually an exact copy of an original in the personal collection of Cold Steel President, Lynn C. Thompson.
Our 1917 Cutlass features the signature 25" curved blade (made from tempered 1055 Carbon Steel) and a half basket guard that's stamped out of heavy and durable 18-gauge steel. Both the blade and guard are deeply and lustrously blued to resist rusting. The handle is made from carefully shaped exotic rosewood and secured to the tang by three heavy duty brass cutler's rivets.
The scabbard is an accurate reproduction of the original and is made of high quality leather and features brass and copper fixtures and can be worn comfortably at your side on a pistol belt, ready to spring into action in a flash!
SPECS:
Blade Length: 25"
Overall Length: 29 5/8"
Steel: 1055 Carbon
Weight: 33.7 oz
Handle: 4 5/8" Hardwood
Scabbard: Leather Scabbard w/ Brass and Copper Fittings

The cutlass is an often overlooked and under rated blade, but it is really about perfect for close quarters battle. It is wielded with one hand, it is short and powerful, designed not to snag on rigging during naval warfare on crowded ship decks. It has obvious chopping and slashing power, being able to sever a limb in a single attack, but is also capable of stabbing. It offers excellent protection for the hand. Versatile, effective, and really without serious faults for combat in close quarters. A cutlass in one hand and a pistol in the other could be as effective today as it was in the late 19th century.

This cutlass would make a very good zombie killing edge weapon. Not too long like a katana but has more reach than a machete. It also has a hand guard. The tick rugged blade also allows is to be a tool blade chopping wires and wood.

Looked up more on this cutless. The scabard is implied to be flimsy, but I wouldn't mind that. As a practical thrusting weapon its tip appears equal to any tactical knife. Owners say it's front heavy. I'm jumping headfirst into a shark tank writing this, but at 2.2 pounds I don't see that as an issue: days of chopping wood with an ax has taught me that swinging unbalanced bladed tools can be pretty smooth and the tool lightens each day.

It confuses me to complain about it’s forward weight. That’s how cutlasses were historically. They’re cutting swords primarily but also used for cutting through wood and tough rope. They needed to good at cutting and being forward heavy was a common way to achieve that.

My wife and I both have this model. It would be nice if Cold Steel sold a super dull and rounded tip training model to match so we could use them in HEMA for full on sparring. Barring that I guess we will have to buy 2 more and grind on them ourselves. Just seems like a waste. Another option would be to use the same Handle/Guard on a polyethylene bladed version but it just wouldn't be the same as steel on steel.

@1.21 the cutlass is bending AWAY from the direction of force applied to it (the curve of the bend is toward the opposing force of the yard arm). Was it pre bent (adding spring and strength) before the stunt was attempted?
@iratepirate648
@iratepirate648 8 жыл бұрын
Could you explain how the sword was flexed while being used for pull ups and returned, past straight, to bend in the opposite direction? Because no sword, or any material that I know of, can spring back in that manner.

Got one of these. Sadly it has little to no distal taper at all which makes it clunky and the opposite to nimble in it's handling characteristics. Historical originals of this type of cutlass has very good distal taper and are very nimble in the hand, the complete opposite of the Cold Steel 1917 Cutlass.

I bought this sword about a year ago. When I got it I obviously cleaned all the grease off. It was sharp but I sharpened it a bit more. I then greased it a little (with same grease I use to maintain all my swords) cleaning off the excess (this I wasnt even going to do as its painted black but did to be safe) and kept it on display in the scabbard. Anyway I would take it out once in a while and clean it and mess around with it chopping shit. At the top where the scabbard is tight against the steel I noticed some small circles or dots of rust on the blade aused by the scabbard. I scraped these off and cleaned it and now keep it out of the scabbard which is shite as it looks amazing in it. I was really shocked as it is the most I'v actually spent on a sword so far and I'v never had that problem. Has any one else heard of this or had the same problem?

I have an original, with it's original leather sheath. It's in excellent condition. It's a testament to the quality of the materials used. It's been hanging on my walls since 1968. This reproduction looks relatively accurate. Though Mine is already quite sharp, I'm planning to put an edge on it soon. These days, there's a real chance I may need to employ it in dispatching some of the whack job crazies, that seem to be popping up like mushrooms...'Defense of the realm'.

I am not a martial artist nor do I intend to go into combat duels with swords. But I have found that using a sword on a trunk is the best exercise for a man's body. It gives me strength and balance and flexibility. All I am doing is attacking a dead tree trunk and trying to do with proper stances and my back feels way better. So combat simulation is great for exercise but so is farm work simulation which I find I can do (not being a farmer) using large ropes and kettlebells. But I find those boring.

If you mean the others, the reproduction sabres cut better than this cutlass it is because as Infantry and cavalry sabres they have longer blades. The cavalry sabres typically the longest of all, for out in open ground to give extra reach when on horseback. This is a naval boarding cutlass and as such it has a shorter blade so it is more useful in the confined spaces of fighting on the deck, and below decks of boats and ships.
