One of the most famous swords was the Cutlass, used by naval men for centuries but made famous by pirates.
The overall build of the Cutlass made it extremely popular among seafarers in the 17th and 18th centuries.
As a short broadsword, generally around 28 inches in length, the Cutlass was ideal for use on ships, where space was limited.

Since flintlock pistols were brought up, here's a fun fact about one pirate in particular, Edward Teach (Blackbeard) was known to strap on multiple pistols (about 4-6) in order to keep shooting and not have to take the time to reload. Due to his insanity from syphilis, and his obsession with being seen as the devil, these probably made him seem more hellish. Imagine, your ship gets boarded by pirates, and you see a tall burly man, with a thick beard, his face blocked with smoke that came from his beard and hair; he looks on fire. Just then he pulls back his long coat and brandished two pistols, two of your mates are dead. He drops those and pulls out two more from his chest, shoots, now two more are dead. You're frozen in fear, this man killed four men in the matter of seconds without as much as taking out his cutlass, but thats not the end. He pulls out his last two from his sides and shoots two more men, now he sees you, staring at him, his eyes red from smoke, that you can see. He pulls out his cutlass. Now I can think of one of three things you may do: one, desecrate your trousers. Two, run away, possibly jumping overboard where you may be better off. Or lastly, you can muster your courage to fight the devil, in which he may just stab you right through while he screams in your face, cackling as you spit blood from your mouth and is left bleed on deck.

@Alexov Brusilov The video said "ruining the chance of killing them during interrogations " However I believe they meant running the risk of killing them during interrogations. You don't want to kill the prisoner you are interrogating because as the saying goes, dead men tell no tales. Having the blunt side allows them to beat the prisoner without causing to much damage unless you really smack them, its also good to avoid killing them as corpse draw in much less ransom money and slave traders won't want them either.

The French cutlass with the cup hilt you see at the end is often the one seen in Pirate movies set in the 17th and 18th centuries, however it is a much later cutlass from the 19th century. They were actually much simpler in design at the time.

The Cutlass was also used on land by the British Police during the 1800's, with early uniform police officers being issued both a Truncheon (That's an early Nightstick to Americans) and a Cutlass, with which they were required to perform daily drills to gain and keep up their proficiency with both these weapons

They didn’t carry their cutlasses daily, though. They were issued to SWAT teams (or the 19th century equivalent) for stopping riots

The cutlass is still used today(August 2023) in a more ceremonious role with the United States Navy. The cutlass is used as a leadership identifier in recruit training. The Recruit chief petty officer in day-to-day roles at RTC Great Lakes. The cutlass is the RCPO's pride and joy and is used when marching to signal the RCPO's leadership role.

In SCA where they teach unarmored sword combat, your secondaries include Buckler's, daggers, coats, lanterns, sticks and pewter mugs. Getting your sword hand smacked by a full tankard is an embarrassing experience.

This sword is commonly referred to as a "cutlass" but a short sabre like weapon used during the 17th-18th century were really called "hanger" the cutlass wouldn't appear until the early 19th century. But this is just nomenclature.
