I recently purchased the Cold Steel 1917 bowie and became curious how a kydex sheath setup would look. The leather sheath provided is beautiful, but of course the friction when withdrawing the blade is pretty substantial. I see the thumbnail to your video and my heart rate quickened. The kryptek pattern is similar to what I want. I actually would love to have one in the typhon coloring. I'm also considering some custom scales if it's possible. I don't really know if the same company who made the scales for my Esee CM6 would have them. Something for me inquire about and do my research first. I also appreciate the information on the sling setup as well. The paracord is a perfect look in combination with the sheath. Thanks for the video! Subscribed, 👍, & 🔔

These were 2 insane, wobbling, knuckle balls I threw at Micah and in his usual fashion it looks like he grand slammed both of them! The best part of this demo is watching how Micah handles a 12" knife, you have to see the Frontier Bowie in person to get a real respect for it's immensity.

Said Bowie knife is a fighting knife, and that guard is to protect your hand. I work with leather, because Kydex is way to bulky and noisy. I have said knife, and I like the sheath system it comes with. But I'm old school.

Sure is a beautiful blade! I think kydex outperforms leather in some ways and visa versa. The bulk of a kydex sheath is in the profile, but leather is bulky in thickness and isn't as sturdy. Kydex doesn't have to be noisy, but it'll never be as quiet as leather. There's something magical about a well -crafted leather sheath. The rustic old school feel and function is something to behold. But I'd take kydex 10 times out of 10 for harsh environments or combat. Bottom line for me is that neither can truly be universally better than the other, so it's all about choosing the right tool for the job.

Another beautiful sheath my friend. You talent and innovation are insane man! What would you recommend for a kydex sheath for a small edc knife like a bark river little creek to carry scout style. What would your attachment method be, soft loops, tekk lock or like an ulticlip? I want to keep the sheath as low profile as possible. Also I’d like to wear it with a belt and without a belt?
@BlackBearCustomKydex
@BlackBearCustomKydex 3 жыл бұрын
I'd go with soft loops for the lowest profile. Pancake style sheath and soft loops.

Nice toy hatchet. And a over complicated cover and carry system. As for the Frontier Bowie, it deserves a leather sheath. Yes the one it comes with is big and bulky, but that kydex one isn't much better.

Some questions on the beautiful Bowie sheath; Did you double with of green and the tan for strength, looks or both? When doubling the kydex layers like that, are you heating and molding them together/simultaneously? Any difference from standard thickness you’d use for a single layer? TIA. /grasshopper 😉

The customer asked for double layer and specifically picked OD green for the base layer with kryptek highlander on top. Double layer gives you a distinct look and certainly increases the overall strength of the sheath. That can be a real blessing OR curse, depending on how well you prep the knife for retention. If you add too much retention, you're in for a long day trying to adjust it and get it right. NEVER do both layers at the same time. Kydex often fuses to other layers when pressed. That's why sometimes when you pull the sheath out of the press it's difficult to separate the layers. The process is slightly different for taco and pancake style sheaths. For pancake, I do the first layer, then when it's hard, I remove it from the press, drill my holes, and then get the second layer on it. That way, all the prep work you do to the knife is transferred onto both layers. Once you have the second layer formed, remove just one side of it from the first layer. Use the first layer as a drill guide to get your eyelet holes into the second layer. Do one hole, then put an eyelet through to hold it in place. You don't need to set the eyelet; just push it through the hole. Then go to the farthest hole from that point and do another one the same way. This will stabilize the two layers and you'll be able to drill the remainder of the holes consecutively. Then remove that piece, flip the sheath over and put the other side on for the same process. You WILL have drill shavings stuck to the insides of the second layer and outside of the first, so get yourself one of those rotating deburring tools. I got mine for $8. One of the most used tools in my shop! For taco style, press the first layer, then the second, then mark and drill your holes through both layers at the same time. If you drill the base layer only, you will inevitably be guessing a little at the location and it will cause some ugly oblong holes. Everything after the above steps is purely a matter of style choice. As for thickness, I ALWAYS use the thickest kydex I can find without being unreasonable. The strength difference is massive, while the added weight is very minimal. Thicker kydex tends to be a little harder to get up to temp, but it forms better, gives springier retention, and I find it to be generally easier to work with. In a perfect world, I would do a layer of .093 for the base layer, and another later of .093 for the upper layer. However, .08 on the upper layer is just fine. Honestly, .08 Double layer sheaths will be strong anyway. I just like .093 better. You'll need to get some longer eyelets if you plan to join 4 layers of kydex, ESPECIALLY if they are all .093. USAKnifeMaker sells a product called Siska S-66 eyelets. They are the equivalent of GS 8-14, which just doesn't seem to exist. Hope that was all helpful! Next time shoot me an email or text and we can go over anything you'd like. I try to minimize doing this in video comments haha

So I’m sorry I have no experience with Soft Loops. Combat loop, Tek Loks, Ulti-Clips yes, but Soft Loops No, never. So don’t think think me a dummy when I ask, you have to wear soft loops with a belt right? If so what’s your recommendation for a horizontal carry mechanism I can use on shorts and pants that I don’t wear a belt with?
@BlackBearCustomKydex
@BlackBearCustomKydex 3 жыл бұрын
Soft loops definitely require a belt. The only clip I trust without a belt is the ulticlip, though I wouldn't recommend wearing anything outside the waist or horizontal with it. If you do, you'll want two ulticlips to keep it balanced.
