In this video, I show you how to use the simple but effective technique of Cold Water Lime Pasteurization to grow mushrooms on straw. The process is pretty simple, basically just soak straw in a water bath of hydrated lime for 12-24 hours, drain, inoculate, colonize and fruit!

I got a 15 pack of 5 gallon paint strainers which I have used multiple times. I fill them 3/4 full then tie off with a rubber band drop into a less than half full 20 gallon waste can with my lime mix.(I put 2 grams per litre of hard water)put a cement block on and soak for 16 to 20 hrs

Thanks, Tony! Your videos are fantastic. I've watched how you grow mushrooms on mushroom beds outside without pasteurising the straws. Do you recommend pasteurising the straws before inoculating them to grow mushrooms outside? Would that make it less hard for other things outside to grow in the mushroom bed or will pasteurising makes no difference when growing outside?

For draining our limed straw we took a plastic garbage can and drilled holes in the bottom. We then forked it in there when done to drain and placed a heavy weight on it overnight. it was fine the next morning to load into the growing containers. You can use the garbage can for regular use by just using a bag in it.

The drier, the less probable it is for wood's own defense against mushrooms and such is still active. Hardwood, green grass, whatever is used. I believe there is another reason, also, so...all growers I have read say 1-year old substrate. I am hoping that the lime will take of this, though, since I have no way to know how old mine is GL to all!
